So the official day started at 6:22. I'm in the blue hills with ~100 other hunters. There has not been a single shotgun report.

I think the deer population in here has been fantastically over estimated.

Was sold as ~80 deer per square mile by MA DCR.

It's 8:41 and I just heard my first couple of shots fired in zone 6 close to me. I heard a couple at 7. I found a spot with a bunch of new and older scraps little poop. Nothing yet for me but while writing this some more shots fired. I'm in a stand. Hope they get moving.

I was out in zone 7. I just called it quits. There were a few shots in the distance at 8:40 in rapid succession, then another at 9. Nothing since.

Pit bull whats your plain for next week? Stand or ground game. I'm thinking about staying on the ground so I can move around a bit. I do like the vantage point from a stand though.

Murphy but you also have to factor in one day of hunting with no great knowledge of the travel patterns of deer there so all in all not a bad percentage. I hunted a lease in VA and even with 50 deer per square mile their were still days I had no sightings not many but a few. Also some of these guys could be newbies or some could have seen deer but no shot opportunity.

I deleted my post for obvious reasons, but I honestly think you could pull similar numbers on a 7000 acre piece in zone 7

Here is the Quabbin hunt for comparison. I'm still trying to find the first years success rate.

I spoke to someone who hunted the first two days of archery and they saw 54 deer. As we all know, the deer run behind the houses to those small sanctuaries when the pressure gets turned up. Something to think about for next time around.

Surpised this hasn't been posted yet. To my knowledge this was the biggest buck shot so far in the Blue Hills hunt.

I hunted zone 1 on day one helped that guy and his wife put that buck in his truck, saw alot of deer all running at 30 mph, had one chance at a big buck in that zone but to far and all i could see was hes neck and head was not to comphy with that shot at 130 yards so i passed to anyone who is going in there all the deer that i saw and that were taked where below the t in the roads, hunted quabbin thurs and fri prescot, didnt see anything no fresh sign that place is hunted out, i live right next to the quabbin and they have devestated the deer in there we hunt behind my house and the last few years have been tuff

and by the way im 65 years old have killed many big bucks over my 50 years of hunting i have hunted in a lot of places over the years and have never seen so much buck sign rubs everywhere huge rubs and so many scrapes i couldnt count them all in foul meadow in the blue hills but haveing bow hunters in there with gun hunters is a big mistake and it should be a 2 day hunt instead of 1 day just my opinun

No kidding eh snowshoe. Spike, pre quabbin hunt i could drive round petersham with a buddy and put our headlights in fields. It was not crazy to see 50 in a field at night. 10-10 was normal. Havent seen 50 in petersham in the last 10 years combined including hunting and just being around, driving, hiking, biking ets. Makes me feel a bit for folks hunting near blue hills...
