Hi , guys. I am new to the site, but have checking it out for the last yr. Moved here 3yrs ago from central Pennsylvania, for work. Have been bow hunting since I was 12. It was a huge change from hunting there lol . Just bow hunt , gave up gun hunting yrs ago. Mainly hunt with a longbow, recurve and started getting into selfbows last yr. Didn't get a deer the first yr but been doing good ever since. Left all my hunting buddies back in PA. Pretty boring keeping to myself. Seams like a good group of people here. Looking forward to your posts. Thanks

Welcome. I've been trying to hunt Pa. for about the last five years. Lots of Game Land there. What area of Ct are you in? Are you making any of the self bows?
Have you been to the Leatherwall yet? That's the traditional only forum on Bowsite.

Always looking for someone to hunt with in PA. Take an trip back for the rut every yr. Live in Salem CT. The selfbows I have are made by Raptor Archery. Not up to making one yet. I have been on the Leatherwall. Lots of good info and funny people. Thanks

Hey Westline. There are a couple of stickbow guys here too. Recurve and Longbow for me, I bought a selfbow, but the draw is just a bit short so I gave it to my son. I got a big 0 this season too.

Hi Westline. Same here...from PA and hunting since 12. 30 years later I still hunt at our family camp in north central PA. McKean county. Got a nice PA 9 point this past season. Been trying to bow hunt CT public land. Learning how not to get ambushed by biking squads and dog walkers. Feel like I am getting close to zeroing in, and hoping for a good CT bow season this year.

Welcome Deerhunter.
Which CT public land are you hunting? When you say you got a nice PA 9pt, was that with a bow? What is your choice of equipment?

Hunting public land in CT is really simple once you learn how to do it. Go onto Google Earth and look at the area you have in mind. Find out where people are allowed park, the direction they enter the woods and if there are trails in the area get a map from the town or the state showing those paths. Then, you can use the hikers, bikers and walkers to your advantage. Good luck

Leave a roadkill for the dogs to roll in and they will stop coming there. Might even dissuade a hiker or two. Fresh skunk scent near the parking lot might give them pause also.

WB, great idea. I never thought of human repellents. Anyone wanting to use skunk, give me a PM. I have (27) 1oz bottles of pure skunk essence to sell.

Hi Wild Bill. The buck i got was with rifle. I always hunt rifle in Pennsylvania. He was the second big buck that came through that morning. Couldn't get a shot at the first one, but he was a wall hanger. Where we hunt in PA you need to get a buck with more than 3 points on one side. I think this is the reason why I have seen a lot more big bucks in the past years. Before they put this regulation in place you could shoot a spike.

Hi Bigbuckbob. Thanks for the tips. I actually like the challenge of learning new land to hunt, but haven't had a lot of time the past few years since we have 4 little kids that take up most of our time. Still I seem to enjoy hunting now more than ever. Scouted a local SF for a while and got back in there where the deer were and concluded that I just can't hunt that deep. The drag out is too much. I found some good areas about 45 minutes from where we live in Bristol and looking forward to hunting it next year. Found a good ridgeline above a small stream with plenty of acorns, deer trails, and buck rubs and scrapes. Now just need to spend some time there finding out how they move through.

Try the old man trick, get a fold down cart.

If you have a spot you like and a spot you don't like, but both have deer sign,..........well the choice is clear. Confidence in the area you're hunting is very important to success. Sounds like you have a couple of choices, but I would start with the one where you can get to easily. Good luck!

Deerhunter - You may want to look into joining Bristol Fish and Game. Pretty sure they have a lot of their own land, and it would be close to where you live. There are plenty of guys on here who have been very successful on public land, but taking the time and effort to get private land access in CT would be a big plus, especially if it is in part of the state that allows Sunday hunting. Ditto to what Wild Bill and BBB said.... It seems I have some of my best luck whenever I leave my cart at home in the garage.... Can't recall who it was, but someone on here shot a deer that they had to cut in half to drag out this past season.

Bristol F&G only allows upland game hunt, nothing else. The club offers rifle range, pistol range, archery range & 28 life size animal range, trap, skeet, sporting clays, and a stocked pond. We own a lot of land on top of the ridge above lake compounce and we raise our own pheasant.
