We all, every one of us, has a preconceived notion of what our new bow should look like, what it should feel like in hand, what it should draw like, how it should "hold", and how it should shoot. I have an idea of what I want for me. You have an idea of what you want from a bow. And so does the next guy. And each one of us would be exactly correct in our vision. We would be exactly correct for ourselves at this time. That does not mean what I choose would be right for you. Or vice versa. OK, so you're the world's greatest shot and you pick out a robin hood superslam whiz bang triple wheel compound. Does that mean I should? Hardly!
There are a great many very good bows available today from a variety of different companies. That's my point, pick the one that "fits" you. That feels right, that looks right according to your ideas, that shoots the way you expect it to, and that delivers everything you think it should. That is the best bow for you. It is the one you will have confidence in, the one that will feel the best to you, and the one that will meet your expectations. Yes, listen to Charlie, Bob, Don, and Pete and Fred but in the end do not be afraid to make up you own mind. Take advice, but listen most to your self. Good luck.

I will start.. I am the Pete that casekiska mentions. Are you considering a recurve or long bow? I am partial to Dick Robertson Styk bows out of Montana. He is well known and makes a beautiful shooting bow.

Sorry Pasquinell, I guess I should have asked what kind of bow. Good point. But don't you think too that what I mentioned applies whether it is a stick bow, a recurve, or a compound?

I suggest you go somewhere that has a good selection of different brand bows and shoot all of them. You'll know which is best for you.

I bought the no cam last yr. It's quiet and smooth but a little heavy and long. I will probably keep it a few yrs unless I find a deal.

I bought a Halon 6 last year. Adapting from an old Martin Cougar Magnum, I found once I adjusted my grip I am shooting better than I ever have. The draw curve was a lot different than I was used to, but it didn't take long to be comfortable with that either. Love the bow, but I agree, everyone is different and you should go with whatever "feels" best to you.

Don't over think the recurve purchase. Pick out a decent used one and spend some time shooting it and only then will you begin to learn about the type of bow that you like. Chances are that you will be bouncing around for a while until you find the one you really like. But that is all part of the fun of traditional bows. Two sticks and a string right, how hard can that be? Take the plunge and have fun!!

I bought the Halon 6 last year and I've been extremely happy. I shot a number of bows on three separate occasions to determine what I liked best and decided on the Halon. I also liked the No Cam, but the Halon won out due to the some crazy speeds at which it flings arrows. Keep an open mind and shoot a bunch for yourself.

Hey Vern, maybe you should get a crossbow?? You could put a fancy light gathering scope on it. Sure would make those late night sits over that corn pile a lot easier! Did you spend time with Warden Amy again this fall?? :)

I shot most of the Matthews, and went with an Elite Synergy. I felt it was the smoothest by far, with an amazing back wall you can seriously hold for minutes with little effort. I'm up to 70lbs, but I started at 55lbs, and it was plenty fast and smooth as can be. Good luck with your search.
