2. Barren Ground Caribou Hunt - 7-day wilderness Caribou hunt for 1-hunter in Alaska with Alaska Trophy Hunts - donated by Tom Shankster, www.tsakhunts.com. Why is CBA offering this hunt?

This clown has screwed over more hunters than I can count and I know that the State of Alaska took him to court recently on many charges but I have been unable to find out what came of those charges.

I would caution everyone considering purchasing this hunt to google him before deciding to bid on it. Personally I would never consider hunting with this outfit.

CBA is offering this hunt because it was offered to us as a donation. Our volunteers handling the banquet and donations don't have enough time to vet everything coming our way. We'd sure appreciate your help volunteering next year to look over all the donations and donors. Contact any director to join the volunteer list.

There is a hand full of hunts........ No time to check out who is donating hunts? Really?

From: Bowhunter*
08-Mar-17
He has donated to the CBA in the past and the CBA has never received a bad report on him from those that have purchased the hunt. I know the accusations that have been out there but, unless something has changed, the policy of the CBA is to go with their experience with him rather than hearsay until charges are filed and he is convicted. Innocent until proven guilty!

Siggy, I put in around 15 years as a BOD member and voulenteer for CBA. When the auction list comes out this late is is hard to give timely input. Feel free to send me the list for next year and I will be happy to check things out. Talk to Tom B. (CBA DOW Rep) about his hunt with the so called outfitter and see what he has to say about it.

For those that did not read what I posted or did not check things out for themselves, "Charges were filed and lots of them".

Ron, I did a Google search on this outfitter. Nothing good was said about him or his operation. Paul

I posted a thread on Bowsite last year about this guy!

Keith, I saw the thread you posted. Can you beleive this clown is still in business? Did you ever hear the outcome of all the charges?

I would strongly recommend that the CBA refuse this donation and just make a statement that they have been made aware of information about this outfitter that they feel makes it unsuitable for them to auction if off.

I sent an email to Grant (banquet chair) that this issue needs to be investigated. Pat and Lyle would be good people (they live in the area and are on the banquet committee) to look into this and make a decision as Pat works for the CPW and Lyle has owned a guiding business here in Colorado. Always hard to turn down a donated hunt but if there is evidence that this outfitter has done things wrong, then allowing it to go forward, would not be in the best interest of the CBA or the CBA member who might win the bid.

I saw Tom at the ISE show in Denver and notice he is still donating to GSCO. I was a bit surprised to see him, but it appears that nothing happened in AK regarding allegations of waste and such.

I think any "donated hunt" should go under the category of Buyer Beware.

We bought a donated hunt at the banquet auction a few years ago, with a reputable outfit. It was supposed to be a full day guided archery pheasant hunt with a certain number of birds to be planted.

When we arrived we heard all about how we were on the "donated hunt". We fiddled around for half the morning while a guy rode an ATV out to plant a little basket of birds - nowhere near the number promised because we saw the basket.

Finally the guide with the dog took us out and marched us around some grass fields for a couple hours where there were no birds (none!) before finally leading us to the little plot where they'd stuck a few pheasants. We had some shooting and for an hour or so it was fun.

Then we went back to the base, ate chili, and went home. If we'd paid full price for it to the outfitter we would have been REALLY upset because it clearly was a second-class effort since it was "donated".

I have a Question? Does CBA no longer receive a elk governor's tag to raffle? IF not why?

Only questioning cause now you want us to go to a banquet give money to win a free hunt with a dirt bag? (As stated by others, i have no personal experience.)

From: Paul@thefort

The CBA does receive an elk governors tag but not this year, but next year.

You do not know all of the facts but the CBA banquet committee is reviewing this donation. Lets not jump to conclusions.

Thanks Lyle, I think that was a good choice. I under stand the hunt was not accepted for the reasons given above so thank you banquet committee. Thanks everyone for the heads up and input here.

I am the banquet chairman for the CBA Banquet in 2018, so we will keep a sharp eye open. Paul

I'm having to give my tickets away to a young lady and her son. I'll be in the process of moving out of state. Would of loved to go, but not this year. Good luck and have fun... Lyle, drink a beer or two for me.

Now that I think about it, Lou is correct about, buyer beware concerning "Donated Hunts" regardless who is donating the hunt or to what organization. I recently was told about an auctioned off hog hunt (not a 100% donated hunt) and the winning bid was $1200 for up to 4 people. While the land was only conducive to rifles and the hunters did kill 8 hogs, the accommodations were terrible, rat infested, spoiled food in the "lodge" refrigerator, , dirty dishes in the sink from last year.. I guess, unless these hunts can be vented or the previous hunters report back to the organization about their experiences, these good or bad hunts will continues to show up at these banquets.

I know a guy who shot a B&C moose and a sheep with Shankster on the same trip. He wouldn't recommend him. This isn't a friend of a friend deal--I heard it straight from his mouth.
