Saws are dangerous

I was cutting up a frozen deer shank the other night on a table saw for osso bucco, and bad stuff happened.
The surgeon saved the finger tips of the index and middle fingers on my shooting hand with pins but he said I won't have much feeling or movement in the finger tips, particularly the index finger tip which had the most damage.
Anyone have any experience with this kind of injury and it impact on shooting? Guessing I can manage with bow and rifle since you have some time, a little worried about upland shooting that requires more speed and dexterity.
Its going to be tough to pick your nose now...Lol But in all seriousness Toonces I hope in the long run you will be ok!
Yikes - Heal well man. Glad it was not even worse. I cut off my right ring finger, but when I was 4. It was re-attached and works well, has a funny "scar" though that my kids find oddly fascinating.
So, I really have nothing for you regarding finger loss in a grown up. I'd 1.) do as the doc advises for recovery and 2.) I'd do PT, and a lot of it, once cleared to do so.
Positive energy to you Toonces for a strong recovery!
Thanks.
First three things I thought of was (1) I need to save this venison shank, (2) this is gonna screw up my lifting schedule but maybe I can still do squats, and (3) I may need to learn to shoot left handed.
Then I figured I should go to the ER.
At least my priorities are in check. I read somewhere that not having sensitive fingers may help with a surprise release, trigger pull so who knows it may help.
I have a saw I am selling cheap if anyone is interested.
sorry to hear get well soon.Steve
Most importantly, if Toonces invites you over to eat deer shank....decline the offer. Or at least ask what the special sauce is made of.
Toonces - sorry to hear about your accident, I hope you heal better than expected. I do a lot of woodworking, mostly furniture, and I know first hand the dangers of power tools, luckily nothing as serous as what you have. A band saw works better to cut up meat, especially through bone, but that may have only made your injuries worse :(
All the best!
At least you can still type.
Sorry to hear and wish you full and speedy recovery.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!
Sorry to hear what happened. I cut off three fingers at the first knuckle 20+ years ago. The doctor reattached two of the finger tips, I have mixed emotions about it to this day almost wishing they never reattached them, they hurt like hell almost all the time but I can use them. Not much range of motion so when you start rehab try and move them as much as possible. The one that was not reattached is always cold but that's about it. Good luck with your recovery and don't get down. Remember that it could have always been worse.
I can still hunt and peck with the left hand.
Blood Trail that would be a mistake. My venison shank is epic.
Big D,
That doesn't sound promising. thanks for the advice.
I took off the end of my middle finger 40 years ago dr save it the same way pins iand stitches . Feels are good but feels the cold more then other fingers . Good luck
Christ, there's a lot of fingerless bowhunters here!
Toonces - you may want to ditch the squats and get a Kbox so you can use a harness... Then as soon as you are safe from infection you could start lifting again ;) (there are other ways, Kbox's are just brutal so I am throwing it out there) http://exxentric.com/kbox/
Been there done that..had a knife pulled on me 40 yrs ago ,went to grab his arm got the knife instead, sliced through the bone...docs reattached middle, ring and pinkie..for some reason this guy came out coockoo..you WILL know when there's a cold front and it WILL hurt like hell..the crazy finger is always the coldest ..speedy recovery dude
Notme, stop messing with other dudes women lol. Toonces get well.
"saws are dangerous". Why yes they are. Get better
I've seen that blade when it first came out.,the guy always used a hot dog,all fine and good but he should use his own finger if he truly believes in his product
I just watched the video. He did use his finger, and unlike some on this forum he still has em....Too soon?
Lmao...dummy finger...lol
Wow... Really sorry to hear it, man....
Personally, I'd take painful-but-working over not-there-at-all.... There are some cases where people are better off with a prosthesis than OEM parts, but usually that involves total loss of a hand....
My bro-in-law lost the pad of his thumb in a watertight door on an aircraft carrier.. To get something back there, they had to stitch his thumb into his groin for a helluva long time, and now he has to shave it... But he recovered to where he could still fly and use the pickle button....
Maybe Toonces would be better off with a back tension release???
Sorry to hear about the injury. Best wishes for a good recovery.
