Predator Calling

I've recently started calling coyotes on my place. Second time out yesterday morning, I started a dying rabbit call (electronic) and after 15 minutes, had a tight group of three coyotes come in at a full run from upwind which was surprising as I've always heard they will circle around to come in from downwind when they can. Anyway, I got off two shots and killed one. Just wondering how long it should take before they've calmed down and I can call some more with a reasonable chance of calling in another one?
I live on 18 acres of woods, that is surrounded by rural areas, pretty long ways outside of any town. I hear a lot of them at night, but have no real idea how many are around.
Thoughts?

Go back out in the morning use a different call sequence. They have been on a string lately.

Don't think rifle fire bothers them too much many times, have had others come even after a shot.

I have killed coyotes after the first shot by going to a pup in distress call. You might even get a shot at a second one in the same group by going to this call as soon as the first shot is fired. Some times the others will stop just long enough to look back and offer you a chance at a second animal. If they are called to often in the same area they will begin to get wise to the calling but if you switch up the calls used that will help. During the mating season you can use a territorial howl that often will lead them to believe there are other coyotes in their area. Good luck.

As said above, switch calls and switch location of calling. If they came from upwind they're most likely young dogs and can be fooled again. Keep in mind that most farmers want them gone, go knock on some doors...might just get some turkey/deer access if you can whack a few and save a calf or two.

I used a shotgun on the one I killed the other day, I'm pretty heavily wooded here. Just not fast enough on the pump handle I guess.
That's interesting about the pup in distress call. When do they have their litters? Might try that one around that time.
My call also has a fawn in distress. What week are most fawns born, I'm thinking that will be a good one with all the deer around.

The pup in distress works almost any time even in late fall. Its just the nature of them to respond. Kind on like does responding to a doe distress call in Oct. The fawn distress call works well from Oct. thru Dec. You will want to keep your eyes open for deer when using this call though. I have had mature doe's come running in to protect a fawn. Of course I've had doe's come in to a rabbit squeal also.

There has been so much calling around here with rabbit distress that I think most yotes are educated to that noise.

Rabbit worked like a champ Sunday morning, just wish I'd been faster on the follow up shot. Might've had two. I'll probably try a different call this weekend, the electronic caller I got has several including the coyote pup in distress. Thanks for the tip, I wouldn't have guessed that would work this time of year.
