Why Not Wisconsin
Wisconsin

I just received the list of the winners for the Pure MI Hunt,,,, they put a lot of money in the state coffers, for habitat and management work, based on the 5.00 one only application, but you have to be a resident........
the winner gets a elk tag, a bear tag, deer tag, turkey tags etc, plus the list of sponsored prizes is impressive,,,,,,,,,,
Great way to raise money for wildlife management
Anyone can buy the pure MI hunt ticket. But elk tag has to be used by a Michigan resident. Not sure if a non resident winner can transfer the elk permit to a resident or if it just does not get issued at all.
But, it would be a cool thing for Wisconsin to do their own version of this. They could throw in an elk tag, and a wolf tag too.
Never heard of this but now is that cool!
Currently in Salt Lake city at the Western Hunting Expo. They offer a whole bunch of hunts in a random drawing that is available to both residents and non-residents, along with five big game draws for non-residents only, including sheep, moose, mountain goat and bison. And, some great odds as a non-resident can only apply in person and during this event. Only cost $5.00 per selected hunt. The wait time to apply was about a half hour and they were constantly busy throughout this 4 day event. Make a huge amount of money from this.
Michigan got 259.000 dollars out of this clean strictly for wildlife habitat restoration, I am going to see how to get this going in Wis, lots of contacts to make,,,,, I suppose I will be writing a lot of letters, ha ha
WI DNR will NEVER go for this. It doesn't put enough money directly into their liberal coffers. There are tons of special drawings and projects the WI DNR/state of WI could do to enhance and better public lands and promote not only hunting but conservation. The WI DNR for the most part does not care anymore about the sportsman, especially hunters and trappers.
How about we just raise the price of WI licenses 5%?
Better be damn careful if you suggest "do it like Utah". All of those tags that are auctioned or raffled off came from the public draw and the profits go to a 3rd party with little or no accounting required. Out there it's grown into a system wide cancer in the name of "conservation" benefiting a very small minority. I would encourage everyone to investigate where that money actually goes vs where it could have gone. That's all I really have to say about that.
Who said "do it like Utah?"
Better yet, use the dollars raised by the license fees to actually pay for the wardens, and other conservation projects that actually benefit the hunters. Stop wasting the money we already send Madison on bureaucratic crap!
What could we offer for a $5 raffle ticket?? Bear, deer, sturgeon, otter, fisher, bobcat, turkey... anything else??
How can we sell it to the politicians? They already have the big players in their back pocket when it comes to the tags. The Indians already have dibs on 1/2 of the elk tags. Hunters pay one hell of a lot of money and get very little in return in regards to habitat improvement.
WWF, WBHA and WBH already get bear tags to give away.
Michigans raffle is a RIPOFF! I haven't won yet. LOL. Actually I buy one each year and I will continue to. Somebody has to win, it might as well be me!
Why Wisconsin?
You want to give money to the DNR? Give more to the outdoor fund when you buy a license. Me I just buy a patrons license and only use about 1/2 of it.
Cal has an anywhere tag raffle for mulies, tule elk and sheep. Cost? $6.... the sheep auction goes for $175k, tule bull? $40k. Mulie? 25k. And a case of ipa is $20... somebody has to win it.
Wi has nothing to offer for special units. Maybe bear? Maybe any weapon like xgun or airbow or rifle during the archery season? Its a nothingburger here.
One minute Nov whines that Wi will be going to a one deer per person season, the next he tells us we have nothing special. Getting difficult to understand where he is coming from.
Cm, please explain the attraction to any wisconsin species draw over other states auctions? It took me 27 years with max pts to draw a tule elk tag as a res. I have 33 years and max pts for a sheep tag. My odds are now 1/200, so i will draw if i make 258. Please explain what wi auction would draw any interest at all? Its a none issue.
Beyond some bear zone i dont see any interest in anyother species in wi. Period 1 turkey? Yawn
"the winner gets a elk tag, a bear tag, deer tag, turkey tags etc, plus the list of sponsored prizes is impressive,,,,,,,,,," ok, for $5 i would put in.
Nov, there is no attraction. Deer are plentiful. Which takes me back to wondering why you think the state is headed for a one deer a year tag?
Bear and wolf tags guaranteed, plus deer, turkey, other hunting, fishing and trapping, a four-wheeler and a snowmobile and a few other large prizes would probably make big bucks at $5 a pop.
Jeff in MN's Link
Yes they will sell, the Michigan drawing includes a ton of merchandise prizes donated by retailers and manufacturers. Anyone that buys a raffle ticket at any sort of banquet would likely buy one of these even without any hunting licenses in the pot. Heck, throwing in an elk, bear, and wolf tag would even motivate a lot of anti hunting folks to buy a ticket so they could win it and show how great they were to burn the licenses they won and in the process brag about how they kept the license away from us horrible hunters.
Nobody has posted a link yet so here it is.
and you wonder why new ideas never get going in this state,,,,,,, very sad
I don't get why all the negativity in this thread. The state should try it, if it craps out then change something or quit it. The state really has noting to loose other than some staff labor time organizing it, finding prize donors, and some seed money to get it going. (minor software changes to sell the tickets on the same machines that sell our licenses in stores and online, etc)
If Michigan can do it successfully Wisconsin ought to be able to do it just as good.
My negativity was directed at the DNR in the fact that they will never go for this. I think the idea of the thread is awesome, but WI DNR won't do something that doesn't look like a for sure cash cow for them.
The way they botch things would you trust the DNR with a money raffle?
Would it be for residents only or open to all?

You do know the bunch that runs that scam are total criminals, don't you??? Even in bed with UTDOW. I wouldn't attend the Expo if you paid me. I have a thing called ethics.

Zim, thanks for not attending. You help the drawing odds.
Haha the drawing odds with or without me are the same as Powerball. Our serious chance at drawing those ended ten years ago when industrial engineer and self-proclaimed wildlife manager Don Peay stole those tags mostly from the regular nonresident draw pool. Last tag I drew there was Book Cliffs elk in 1998 with zero points. Chance of that happening under the current regime is 0.00% (zero point zero zero). Buy your heart out but that scum won't see one penny of my money.
Thank god I stopped them from doing that same BS in Arizona in 2012. They paid off politician Jerry Weirs to sponsor a bill to steal their top 500 big game tags for auction/raffle with HB2072. Not so fast Don! Door slammed. Don't let it hit you in the *** on your way out! Hahaha thanks Crystal Cruz KTVK for granting my request for an interview. Weirs was caught red handed and apologized on camera. What a freakin ebarassment.
I'm with Zim on this one with respect to Utah and its pathetic corruption. Its so blatant they don't even try to hide it. No matter what the sheepeople keep piling in for those $5 chances. I admit, it was really tough for me to not drive down there and try to get one of those tags. I'm glad I didn't. Bottom line is I just don't want to see anything even remotely close to their influence model touch Wisconsin. I'll move back some day and don't want to see it. They tried and failed in AZ and now they're constantly trying to infiltrate Idaho by holding legislation hostage via wealthy landowners lobbying tactics. Even a board member of the WSF was pushing the issue of auction tags (taken from the public pool). We found this out via a FOI request. The good people of Idaho hold true to their values and I patronize their stat as a result. Actually, so do many Sconnies. I actually see more WI plates up there than Idaho plates. It's probably a 40/40/20 split between WI, UT, and ID. That right there tells you that many Utahans don't tolerate the cancer in Utah and head north.
A less publicized shame is how SFW starts their power play in each state they go to by kicking out well qualified wildlife board members in favor of their plants. They do this by buying out the powers that appoint these positions. Sound like a plan???

"I would not be interested in this. I buy exactly the tags I need each year. I don't see how this would be in improvement."
I also buy only the licenses I need. In the past I always bought the patron's even though I only used part of it but figured it was going to a good cause. About a decade ago or maybe more when it became apparent the DNR was getting real good at doing very little other than flushing funding down the crapper I decided to not "donate" any longer. Maybe someday there will be a major housecleaning done in the DNR and they will get back to being a useful organization that does positive and financially intelligent things that people want to support. Until then I'll keep buying only the licenses I need and I'd be leery of anything in WI that claims moneys will be used for "wildlife management".
I very well might be with Zim on this also, except that no one on this thread ever suggested it for Wisconsin.
I've thought about purchasing a Patrons License before but there's too much that I don't use and not enough I would use.
Does anyone here support the idea of different options for a Patrons?
