At 4:30 I was set up in the steady rain waiting for legal light. I had seen 2 toms in this field on Sunday, so I decided to make this my first stop of the year. Birds were gobbling behind me and to my left about 5:15, but a long ways off and also way off across the street too. I first saw a lone hen cross the field about 300 yds out around 5:45. I called sporadicly and the tom across the road was getting closer. I first saw him approaching at 500 yards as a black blob at the top of the field in my binoculars. He very slowly made his way across the field to me, very slowly and cautiously. Many times, he would stand like a statue for 10 minutes without moving, then would come 30 yards closer and repeat. I would give him some yelps and excited cuts and he would gobble and half strut. This chess match lasted 45 minutes, but finally about 6:45 he caught a glimpse of my decoys and closed the final 100 yards with a clear commitment. The grass in this field is already almost 2 feet high so my decoys were hardly visible to him but once he locked in he was mine. I let him come like a periscope through the grass, and then let him come some more, since patience kills more turkeys than any gun or bow. At 30 yards I took the shot and dropped him on the spot. He flopped once and was done. He was a nice longbeard with a 10" beard and 3/4" spurs and weighed 21 lbs. Everything got soaked from the rain, but it was a great morning in the outdoors.
