Darn Turkeys.....silent

I took a chance to run out to my Turkey spot after my daughter's softball game this afternoon. Just before I got there it started to sprinkle.....then harder.....then lightening and thunder booming. So I sat in the truck hoping it would blow by. 30 minutes later the sky lightened and the lightening stopped....soon the rain did to. Good.....nice soft walking in the woods.
I hiked out to a spot I'd not gone down into before. A beautiful high valley full of meadow and mixed pine stands. There are some old ore carts down there....I had to snap a shot of them on my way back out. Steep in and out. Embrace the suck....I did.

The ore carts again from further back. Sweet spot.

I set up in this area. Called for a bit, sat for 1/2 hour, nada.

Climbing back out to hit another spot where I killed a gobbler last year and called one in earlier this year but didn't have a shot (had decided not to take a decoy that day.....dumb) I found this poor little thrashed pine tree.

And back close to my 2nd setup.....about a mile from the first setup.....I found this larger thrashed pine. This area was littered with elk scat although nothing fresh. Certainly from this Spring though and there were areas where the piles were every 5-10' for 30-40' in all directions. Hmmm.......might be a good spot this fall.

2nd set up was in this area. Drops off steep in dark timber below to a creek 400' or so below in a tight drainage then takes off steep again to a more open hillside where I had a gobbler and hen several weeks ago. The gobbler had come up to me in this spot once before giving me a second or 3 to eyeball his thick 10" or better beard. Seeing no turkey since I left my decoy at the truck that day he melted back into the timber before I could get on him. He was not playing today. Silent. Gave it a solid 40 minutes before heading back to the truck 3 miles back.

Found this rub on my way out......fresh resin seeping out. Good sized pine.

And some super fresh cow elk tracks. Had to have been made within hours of my crossing them, or less. Wish there was more volume, but they are here and so will I be come September. No reason to huff and puff up to 11,000' if I can find them under 9000.

And more cow elk tracks. On my first turkey hunt on a Friday evening several weeks ago I bumped two big elk not 150 yards or so from where I cut these tracks today. So that doesn't suck and I'm embracing it anyway.
I will be back after the turkeys up there next weekend.....

Jordan, I really enjoy your threads with pictures, and the captions with them. Sure beats the regular internet chatter that most get pulled into here on divisive issues. This site is about hunting and I'm glad you post these threads.
Thanks for taking me along in your journeys.

I saw 4 Bulls last Thursday evening from my Blind while hunting Turkeys and one was a 4 point so far already (new growth in Velvet) others had just 2 points showing so far. This was in Nebraska.
