A week ago, while cutting hay, I flushed a hen turkey off the nest, so after mulling it over a while, I set a trail camera in hopes of some interesting pictures. I was in a hurry, so time and dates are not right.

The picture above is very dark, so guessing something spooked her.

This one may show what spooked her the night before. It didn't go to the nest though. Having said that, maybe my setting the post caused the coyote to come visit?

Reason I say "they" this one looks a lot leaner. Female with pups?

So, all eggs & shells are gone, the hen looked it all over and has not been back to that site. She had ten eggs in the beginning. Hope she lays another clutch of eggs, AND if I find them, I WILL NOT be posting any free lunch signs.

Neat stuff, Marvin. She should renest as long as none had hatched. Friggin' egg-thieving beasts!

is that strange for a hen to nest in the open like that most hens on our place tend to nest around fall downs or in brush

Think it's fairly common in farming country. Every year I hear of farmers cutting hay especially, and hens not moving until the swather is right on top of the. Many don't get out of the way in time.

Several years back, when I had an incubator, one farmer brought 8 or 10 eggs in after he had killed the hen that way. We got most of them to hatch and released back into the wild.

The background in the photo's is the city limits of Fredonia, KS. We have considerable creeks and timber as well, but considerably more acreage in farming.

Its a shame, would be nice to kill that bitch with pups. Coyotes do way more damage to the turkey population and the fawn population then people think. Cool pics. for sure! Shawn
