Any advice on locating elk near gunnison? Not expecting specific locations, just whether or not they tend to concentrate in the timber more than the high open meadows, seen quite a few cows throughout the summer near Pittsburgh and slate creek, thanks

The only elk I saw a few years back was above slate creek high on the ridge south of Pittsburgh. I was hunting mule deer at the time and that is the only place I saw elk.
See the piebald elk.

ive hunted this unit for archery elk. Look high. anything above treeline would be my starting point. and id stay away from crested butte area. too many tourists, motorcycles, etc in the mountains. id also look hard at going into some of the wilderness areas there

Paul - that bad boy looks pure albino. Pretty cool! I've not had the chance to lay eyes on piebald or albino elk, but back in Michigan saw several piebald whitetail.
