Has anyone used a 3D deer target as a decoy when hunting? If so, any issues with the foam holding scent? Also, should it be set up as a buck or doe during the rut?

I had a small buck target looked like a Delta Backyard 3D target with the ears laid back. It would be a 80 pound deer in real life, but got great results from the bucks, had two actually charge it an run it over !! I used it without scent just put it upwind of me 35-40 yards an most bucks were 15-20 yards of my tree when they came in to check it out. I think the ear position helped because they thought no way is that skinny little buck gonna posture up to me in my territory.

How many times did you use it as a decoy?

Have used it over a dozen times, never really had anything get "spooked" over it. They may have been curious why the deer had rings behind the front shoulder. After the last time it got gored/crushed the front leg got broke so it hasn't been used since. It was quieter to carry in the field than a loud noisy plastic one.

Thanks for the input. I suppose with proper scent protection I have nothing to lose by giving it a shot.

You might send a private message to "Sito," He probably has more decoying experience than anyone on the Kansas site. Have fun. I've shot a couple of bucks around decoys, and had some great times when an arrow didn't fly.

A late friend of mine used a buck target as a decoy several years ago. Because of the walking distance to most of his stand locations he decided to pick a stand location and leave it there. He rigged a pulley so he could raise the target/decoy when he was not in the stand and lower it to the ground when he was in the stand. This solved any scent problems.
He had deer react to it as they would any decoy. One buck attacked it and knocked it to the ground. Others were curious and approached the decoy. Some were spooked by it. His son did kill what they thought was the buck that attacked the decoy in late November of that year.

Ive always used mine as a buck.. Several yrs ago, i left a doe decoy with the scarface set up about 10ft behind her..left them out over night..the next morning the scarface was in numerous pieces, support rod bent, doe knocked over, ..who ever hit it was not happy.
If you have a shooter come in, ears pinned back, sidestepping, hair all bristled up..you better shoot him, cuz hes fixing to bust the deke and will most likely run off.

I just watched some of "Sito" videos. He has awesome footage of that very scenario. Great learning tools for posturing deer. Watch them on You Tube if you get time.

I love using decoys, after using several, my favorite is Scarface. I don't use a target, mainly b/c of the weight and anything that isn't hard shell plastic is really difficult to get scent free. I have had our target knocked over a few times in the back yard in the middle of night though!

Rinks Mr. November has worked well for me. It is inflatable and I have had bucks pop 2 of them. A phone call to Rinks and they replaced them both free. I had to just pay shipping. Killed a few bucks over him. I always use as a buck and most times with just one horn on its head. Shawn
