Had some people looking at crossbow while regular compound shooters were around . The conversation ended with do you think when they found that crossbow that was suppose to be 2200 years old the recurve shooter had something to say to the crossbow . Just wonder what the conversation went like . This is not meant to justifying either side but how do you think it went ?

The older crossbows were nothing like today's cross machines with cams, scopes. Because they once used them with a regular bow attached to a stock and trigger has nothing to do with what is being marketed today.

Missouri- the ancient ones still stored energy right?

Also....they were military weapons that had no thought about 21 century hobby, fair chase hunting.

Like anything else...the Bowman probably did say something condescending to the xbower. Hurt his feelings and didn't pick one up for another millennium.

From one of the references in Droppings xbow wiki link:

"The crossbow was therefore viewed as an inhuman weapon which required no skill and had no honor."

Boy if this ain't history repeating itself...lol

"...led to one of the clauses in the Magna Carta (1215) seeking to banish all foreign crossbow men. All attempts to apply a weapon ban on crossbows failed and all such requests were ignored."

The mere fact of "storing energy" is not the defining factor of describing a bow or crossbow. Many things, including non weapons, store energy.

I have no issue with crossbows, many "former bowhunters" use them including my grown children and many past bowhunting partners. I prefer to remain a bowhunter........... and will continue with my longbow.

While visiting the local gun club, I ran into a friend who proudly told me about his new crossbow and the three inch groups it could shoot at 100 yards. Said many different members shot it with the worse shot landing just 7" from the bullseye. Most of these by people who were firing a crossbow for the very first time. I will guess that alone is bound to bring up discussion.

With everything you can use and do that is now part of the bowhunt Why would the cross bow matter ? The only thing left is to personally hold your own line . If you need ozonics well than do it . The list is huge so pick off the list and go . Hopefully nobody is using everything on the list LOL

From what i found most crossbows started around 500 AD but there was one found in china that was suppose to be 2200 years old . Its on the internet so it has to be true . One of the guys at the shop said could you imagine back in the when a guy was at war running up to a castle wall with a bow and a guy on the wall is shooting at him with a crossbow . The guy on the ground is yelling that isn't fair . There once was a crossbow made that they used to shoot bolts heavy enough to damage the walls on castles and break in entry doors the thing was pretty big . They have a pretty big history . Also if you ever look up airguns you would be surprise on there history , Lewis and Clark used them to cross the country and they go back farther then that . This is not meant to be a history lesson its just about some of the stories in the shop , when you sell weapons and can purchase a beer to drink at the same time its sometimes get interesting .

its remarkable how weapons change. In the last 30 yrs I would say the muzzle loader is even more "bastardized" than the crossbow and how its changed the hunt.

The muzzleloaders today are not the weapons they were when the specific muzzleloading season was established. I'd be all for WI at least banning scopes during Muzzleloader season.

I had a "conversation" with an x-bower at the archery range the other day. There is a sign at the gate stating the rules; Rule # 4: Vertical bows only of 70# draw or less. NO crossbows allowed. Rule # 5: Absolutely NO broadheads allowed. Field points only. Rule # 6: Shoot targets in your lane only. The city was kind enough to construct a very nice fenced in range and purchase (6) 4'x 4' block targets (with tax payer funds of course through the recreation dept) After watching this yahoo shoot 3 bolts at 3 different targets from the same location resting on a picnic table, then walking over and pulling out the broadhead tipped bolts and having all the slivers from the target fall to the ground, I'd had enough. I politely informed him of the range rules.....this guy went nuts and got in my face, I could smell the alcohol on his breath. Rather than allow the situation to escalate, I packed up my stuff and left. But before doing so I took a picture of him w/ xbow and his license plate and sent it to the cops. I'm not saying all x-bowers are like this, but there's a reason separate x-bow targets are made. You wanted a hunting season, you got one. You want to practice, buy your own damn targets and don't ruin it for the rest of us.

I have thrown vertical bow shooters out of my range that come in drunk and have had guys come in and shoot broadheads into my bag targets . I had to make a special tool to get them out without destroying the bag . Has nothing to do with the type of weapon they shoot its the person .

Got to put the x-bow in with the transgender, they do not know who they are even looking between their legs, scope and trigger is a gun. Come to think about it I've seen vertical bows set up the same way, but what the frick it is all about the 'big tent', don't want to hurt any feelings.

Konk1 - IMHO, you did exactly the right thing. Thanks for reacting in a rational and mature manner. Everyone should show that sort of restraint.

That being said, betcha you felt like strangling the SOB! I hope the cops nail his a$$!

What the old crossbows did at the time, was allow armies to outfit, the common soldier, with an effective weapon,,,,, long bow shooters were specialist, both in their physical abilities (weight), and their own strength...... proven on the field of battle between England and France....
