Ok folks- we started setting up at 9:00
Good luck boys and girls. The forecast is smoking hot.. Be sure to get beach chairs, sand and umbrellas.. A great time to work on your tan.
Shoot some deer too.
LOL guys! I'm rockin' the combo sunblock/bug spray while setting a blind for a disabled hunter.
Good luck all. sorry I couldn't make it this year bill v
It really cooled down some surprisingly. I'm out in shorts and a tee but not warm and not sweating. Ready to See some doe start piling up. Lots of tents and campers arrived akready aswell as a few handful of people already passed there proficiency test
Thanks Bill and RC!
Dan is busy assigning properties for tomorrow
Just got back to camp. When I crossed I-22 and eastbound was shut down just past the Kutztown exit.(rte 737)
Chris Orwig is stuck sitting there a couple miles from exit. He asked if they could shoot their qualifying test on side of road and text it to us. Sorry Chris, no can do!
Well, it's 4:15am and coffee is percolating and venison stew is "stewing" (for lunch)! ;-)
Morning ole boy. Hope you guys do well today.
Thanks Roy! Just before 5am and Hunter's are heading out. Hope to put some meat on the ground! : )
Just getting light here. 6:30 Just inside the wood line about 20y from a major trail. Ed is 425' to my east same distance from this trail
Soy beans in field to my left
Straight ahead of me is the hedgerow we walked in and in front of me to right is another soybean field
Behind me it drops down to a valley and road. Can hear a dog barking down that way 300y maybe. Hopefully deer moving! 7am
Thanks Phil
Thanks Justin!
Very slow this morning. Only blood drawn was my own- dang skeeters!!! ;-)
9:15 will get down in 30 min to do a little look-see on this property
this sounds pretty cool... What is it though? big camping/hunting event?
Ben- it is an antlerless hunt to help some of the farmers/landowners in WMU 5C(and Hunters Sharing the Harvest)
Check the other thread for more info(2017 UBP 5C Hunt thread)
Back at camp for lunch. Morning hunt VERY slow! Only a couple deer seen and NO shots.
I dropped Ed off to scout across the road from the spot we were hunting this morning. (Same property, but down in the valley across the road in a creek bottom.
Picked him up an hour later and he looked like he had been thru hell! Mud up to his knees and briars and weeds clinging to his clothes. You can't say we aren't trying! ;-)
He didn't look bad BEFORE I dropped him off(no place to park ;-)
I'm up and ready. Hot hot and it's hot, weather that is. Hunting in shorts this evening. Next week starts the season in northern Pa. Really looking forward the first week of November, deer, turkey and bear all open at same time. I already surpassed the number of bear I've seen this year over all of last year up in the northeast part of PA.
LOL just a little charge:)
Good Luck to everyone! This heat wave is horrible.
My prediction.......Patty Sager will kill herself a doe.:)
I hope dale is right, patty is due
Waiting on a deer picture. You guys really hunt ?
MC-QUACKER SHOW UP?
I just saw a deer 15 min ago. 30 yard out and but to thick. Nuts are falling all around me. Lot of white oak trees.
To warm by ting field edges, got a very small bit of woods on land I'm hunting, I'm gonna be in that tomorrow
The heat happens every year at this hunt. Maybe ya all need to consider a hunt about 2 weeks later in the season. Ya might get more does and participation?
I just got a message one of the guys hit one, I'll be heading to help track soon, pics to come soon hopefully
Tried to post from tree stand, but too weak of a signal.
Hunted in shorts again.
Didn't see any deer, but unfortunately heard them. 4 feeding around Ed on the white oaks back in woods. Then they made him and blew out.
I was out by field edge waiting for them to come out to the corn. Will adjust for tomorrow. Set up by oaks.
Jen and Patty saw deer but not in range.
Unfortunately no deer hanging. One miss and one not recovered. Gotta really redeem ourselves tomorrow!
Hope it cools down a little for you guys.
Thanks Roy- think it's only supposed to get to 87 today! ;-)
Back at it bright and early. Dead calm- not even a breeze.
Adjusted stand sights this morning -on the inside corner of soybean field with good deer sign. Soybeans are mowed down in this corner.
Just heard Daryl has 2 bedded just out of range.
Nothing here yet.
Well we got 4 in the cooler tonight along with going to look for a 5th in the am
Daryl had them bedded at 60y- then they jumped up and took off.
Pat saw 6 bucks- had a doe at 15 y but one of the bucks was standing in front of her!(how do they know?! ;-)
I'm convinced the deer are hitting the white oaks and that's why we're not seeing them on our morning property(it is full of Locust, but no oaks.) Ed watched 4 deer for 15 min last night feeding on the white oaks(different property)
Lots of deer sign and soybeans are mowed down on the field edges, but no deer spotted on that morning spot.
The evening property we hunted last year and we kept pushing deer in the fields in the morning trying to get into the woods. So this year we decided to only hunt evenings there. (We have to get into the woods from the front side since that is the side the farmer owns.)
But if the deer are staying in the woods feeding on oaks, we may try to sneak in there tomorrow morning. At this point it might be worth a try! Gotta pull out all the stops!
Required equipment this year! ;-)
Required equipment this year! ;-)
Glad I had plenty of refills for my thermocell! Somebody said they stopped at Walmart and they got the last one!
Is Bob McQuacker hunting, or did he fail the proficiency test again? :)

RC, I failed so they Stuck me on a farm that doesn't have deer.

I didn't test him Roy. I wonder if he paid somebody off to pass it? ;-)
Well, it's much cooler than yesterday. 82 with a breeze I wore long pants in but with a short sleeve t-shirt. Brought the long sleeve performance t-shirt in and changed when I got up in tree and cooled back down.
This is the OFFICIAL drink of the UBP 5C Hunt this year! : )
I'll bet he did something fishy....
I even froze a couple for the afternoon hunts! That way it stays cold for a while. If you get too hot, stick 'em in your pockets! : )
Perry are you wearing GLOVES?
Perry are you wearing GLOVES?
How real bow hunters hand look, even in 10 degree weather.
On another note. A friend from Wisconsin who's following this thread said its was only 93 degrees in Wisconsin today.
Just put a doe on the ground!
2 came down thru the thick stuff and the lead doe came straight in at me! Stopped inside 10y but no shot! : (
Turned broadside but no clear shot. I drew when it looked like it was gonna turn and head for an opening and it FROZE! I held for as long as I could, but had to let down. It heard me and looked but I froze. She couldn't see me thru the canopy of small saplings. Eventually she turned and walked away but right into a tiny opening at 18y. I threaded it thru the window and hit her good hard quartering shot! Think I even saw where she went down about 50y away
I keep getting a error code500. Won't let me add pic to above post.
Don't know if you will be able to see it, but the small opening is in the center of this thick stuff! (Just to the right of the tree limb on left)
Real bow hunters hand.
Hope the pic comes thru.
Those bloody hands are not perrys. Perry wore glove to dress his deer.
What sticker said x'2. I'd never eat McQuackers cooken. Heck he can't even make mozzarella cheese.
Mine
Mine
LMBO! Here you go guys. Sorry it's so late but it took us a while to get them out and then eating pizza and drinking adult beverages back in camp! : )
Ed's deer
Ed's deer
Shot mine at 5:45- hard quartering- went in behind left rib cage and exited the chest just inside the right leg
At 6:50 had a smaller doe come in and almost got drawn on her but she spotted me and bolted. Then headed down towards Ed. 10 min later I get a text from him "think I hit one"
She doesn't have a hole in her?
Roy- look between her front legs- that is exit. Entrance is on other side.
Starting to figure them out! Ed opened the stomach on his and FULL of acorns!
Good night for us. 4 deer brought back to camp and 1 hit. Going back in morning to look for that one. The hunter who lost one yesterday redeemed himself tonight- shot a nice big doe! : )
And 3 of the 4 deer killed were donated to HSH!
Thanks guys! Gonna hit the sack now and hit it hard in the morning!
Justin- just saw your question. We moved back off the field edge back into where the oaks are.(further into the woods) They seem to be moving parallel to the fields. Not coming out into the corn.
5am now- headed back in to same spot. Hopefully have a good morning and kill s'more deer! ;-)
Having a good time keeping up with you guys. Keep up the good work.
Way to go guys. Watch out for MacArthurs Road Kill Cafe. If he's serving venison it was picked up off the side of the road, he doesn't shoot any. :)
Thanks guys! It's nice to be able to post from treestand! : )
Here is the required pic for Dale!
Way to go guys, keep it going.
No deer yet. Ed thinks he heard one 50y on other property.
I almost got shot at groundhog but took too much time getting a "varmint" arrow on string! Ran off before I could get a shot! : (
My morning view to the east or 3 o'clock as I sit. Not to hot YET .
My morning view to the east or 3 o'clock as I sit. Not to hot YET .
This one's for you Ed! Dressed up this morning- put my fancy GLOVES on! ;-)
Got a text that one of our Hunter's got one this morning
Perry just text me asking if I can drop him off at the finger nail joint so he can get a man a cure before the pig roast tonight.
Just got a text that Patty Sager hit one! Good blood. Severals guys are headed there now to help track! Stay tuned...................;-)
To pee or not to pee is the question? ???
Chris Orwig was the hunter who shot one earlier, so looks like we have at least 2 more today!
I deleted the pic that was here. .. It was not me and I don't know who it is and I didn't post it.
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Just got this text
Patty Sager(Jen's daughter ;-)
Dang turkey buzzard flew in and landed up in a tree 25y from me! Took off again before I could get a pic! : (
Gotta love a girl that guts her own deer! ;-)
Awesome..... Congrats Patty.
Ed, are you not wearing a safety harness?
Roy, All of our Hunter's are using a safety harness! (It is a requirement!). If they forget it, they MUST hunt on the ground!
But Ed had it- he's using a hang on and leaving his gear at the tree. ;-)
9/21/17
"My prediction.......Patty Sager will kill herself a doe.:)"
~(8o) Yeah...... I'm good.
LMBO!!!!!!!! : )
And I was just informed that is Patty's FIRST archery deer! WAY TO GO PATTY!
I don't expect it to holdup, but guess who's currently in the lead for the Big Momma award? ;-)
My money is on you, Perry! Lol! Congratulations, Patty! That 1st archery deer is the best trophy of them all! Great job, gang! Keep stackin' em' up!!
All I will say at this point is that 2 of the top 3 deer are going to HSH, and the leader to this point is .4 lbs ahead! ;-)
And the count now stands at 7 prior to the evening hunt!
I just got home from work and was able to check out this thread. Looks like everyone is having a great time. Congrats to all that scored, especially Patty, there's no deer like your first archery kill.
Perry - if you spot me the entrance fee I might be able to get in a treestands tonight. Maybe I could give you a run for that top spot.... ??
I heard Bob McQuacker hit one last night, messed his vehicle up pretty good too:)
Mitch, that is a generous offer! We will gladly accept the donation to HSH, However...............by rules, it could not be eligible for the Big Momma! (Not my rule ;-)
Roy- Bob's not that good a shot...................he MISSED with the vehicle too! (Sorry Bob, just couldn't resist! ;-)
Way to go Patty!! Congrats!!
bill v
Mitch- guess who just pulled into camp???? Denise Jones!
I asked Dan if we should just save the time and give her the award now?! (She don't shoot anything small! ;-)
Yes Roy I'm wearing a harness. Where u get I'm not?
Next year it's a camo Speedo and flip-flops
Come-on,,,,,,, , I'm not the only one hunting bear???
Cool, Ed, I couldn't see it in the picture. But theres a fly on your foot:)
LMBO! I'm sitting here sweating my .....................off thinking about the lengths we go to to kill a dang deer! ;-)
Ed, you are worrying me a bit! Think I will sleep in my Beach chair out under the big tent tonight! ;-)
Ok folks- last sit of the hunt. Time to GIT ER DUN!!!!!! Let's hit double digits! (At least 3 more ;-)
6:15 just got a text: "Curtis hit one good!" : )
6:50 got text from Daryl: "Just put a big momma down!" ;-)
You guys are doing great! Keep killing them ??
Perry - my plan was to stop by camp on Thursday and register. Wednesday the boss asked me to do something this morning up at the elk range so that plan went out the window. I canceled Friday's vacation day and worked. Maybe I'll be able to join you next year, if you leave any deer to hunt!! LOL
No problem Mitch! Next year if you can! Thanks guys! Trying to do our part.
That's 9 confirmed! Still Hunter's out. Updates to follow..............,,
Awesome job guys and gals. You too McQuacker..
Great job guys. If Bill V was there with his 5 tags, you would have hit double digits.
Great job everyone!
Congratulations!
Hold on folks..................,,..we had one more come in at the last minute and take the Big Momma! (I knew it! ;-) Well, I had a good run at the top of the leader board til the 11th hour! ;-). BUT I DID get runner up and the prize for heaviest deer donated, so it's all good! : )
And we hit double digits and finished strong as a group!!!!!! Great job folks!!!!!!!!

Bowjo describing his incredible Elk Adventure!
Final totals were 48 registered Hunter's, 10 deer killed and 6 donated to HSH! And MUCH good will made with the local farmers! We talked to many of the landowners over the course of the 3 days that were very interested in how many Hunter's were hunting their properties and how many deer we were seeing and taking! It was nice to see how interested they were and how grateful for the help!
Chris won Big Momma, I got 2nd place and heaviest donated and Daryl won the raffle for the 3rd place prize(random draw of all deer donated)
On behalf of the HSH Thank You! for the donation's Dave Bausch Berks Co. Coordinator
Helluva a job to all those who organize this event every year. It's a win, win, win for everyone. Bow hunters get a place to hunt, farmers get some deer removed from their properties, and hungry people will get some venison for their diets. Kudos to all. BSked
Great job everyone! Looks like a great time!
Congrats everyone, just over 20% success rate is very good especially with the conditions you had and the short period of time the hunt was. Thanks for allowing us to follow along.
Thanks guys! Like Brian said it is a WIN,WIN,WIN,WIN................. : )
As we were sitting around talking the cameradery, fellowship etc..............busting each other's chops(there are some real characters! ;-) All for a good cause! It doesn't get any better than that! :)
Thanks to everone who participated!

What an amazing weekend. Thankyou to everyone who came out and made it so great
thank you to the guys who put in countless hours to set up this hunt and camp out, it was a fun weekend
Congrats on a successful weekend to all. Hopefully next year my work will not get in the way of this hunt.
Dave, it is always our pleasure to support such a great program! Thanks for what you do as well!
And the committee would like to give a BIG THANKS to everyone who helped with the pig roast! From our Chief of Catering Steve Koch, Dad Dick and all the spouses and members of the "injured reserve" who came only to help out and participate in the Pig Roast(while we were out hunting ;-)
Start 'em young! : )
Start 'em young! : )
I will leave you all with one last picture. This is Curtis's son "helping" grind venison. (Curtis got one of the last deer yesterday)

Patty dragging her first deer. Landowner leading the way!
I wasn't able to get Bowsite to download on my phone this WE. In that regard, I wasn't totally prepared for this hunt!! My sincere thanks to Perry, Dan, Gary, Andy, Steve, and all of the others who helped to put this event together and manage it throughout the weekend. Special thanks to Gary and Dan for the hunting locations, stand prep. and guidance. Thanks to Andy, Noah, and Miguel for being there... just after we found Patty's deer. (I called for help when we lost the blood..). A special thanks to Bob McArthur for a fabulous hunting eve. dinner. Thanks to my hubby, who set up our camper and helped to get it back home in one piece. THANK YOU landowners as well. AND a special thanks to my daughter, Patty -- for giving me one of my best hunting days ever!!! Keep it up.
Bob pouring the gravy.
Bob pouring the gravy.
Hunting Eve Dinner At Bob's. Homemade Cavatelli, gravy, and (sorry I forget the name of it), thinly sliced flank steak, seasoned with " Italian goodness", rolled around fresh parsley, etc. and some lovely McArthur and Foust wines, with ole Frank singing in the background.. How lucky to be at this table. Thank you friends!!
That thin steak is Braciole. I wanted to be there just for that. Unfortunately I couldn't get to the hunt and I know I missed out. There are a few folks that deserve a huge "Thank you" for making this a success. I won't name everyone for fear of forgetting someone but I'm sure everyone appreciates the effort that goes into making this happen and the hunters that participate.
Rut, you are welcome I'm glad that I could help .
Making memories!
Making memories!
Thank you for all of the support! This was a weekend to remember!! So happy to share this big moment with the UBP family.
Great thread. Congrats to all the lucky hunters. Looks like fun was had by all (except maybe those who walked by Ed in his tree stand with hardly any clothes on).
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who welcomed me in as a new participant in the 5C doe hunt and showed me what UBP membership is all about. I was impressed with the organization of the hunt and the mission of the UBP. It is always fun to hunt in new areas and meet new people who are passionate about promoting bow hunting. That I was able to fill my tag with only one day of hunting was a bonus to a fun trip. My family enjoyed fresh backstraps for supper last night and I am already looking forward to next year's hunt. When I get the time I will write up a more detailed account of my first time experience at the hunt and submit it for the quarterly newsletter. Good luck to everyone the rest of the year!
Curtis
LMBO Ron!
Patty- It was OUR pleasure! Congrats and so glad we could all share in your special moment! :-)
I will no longer hunt in a camo thong and bearfoot. I got skeeter bites in all the wrong places and my feet hurt. I already ordered a camo speedo and camo flip flops for next year. Anyone else thinking 5C 2018 yet? :)
All in all I had a great time and I want to thank everyone that helped put this very enjoyable hunt together. This 5c Hunt is just a "FUN" lad back no pressure, go hunt in the morning a few hours come back to camp enjoy everyone company, eat, nap, shoot the bows etc and go back out for the last few hours hunt. Again Thanks everyone for making this long weekend so much fun.. Ed R
PS so glad this was not a high pressure hunt that, that Ron S guy make me go on. :)
Ed- thanks for your help this year and providing the air-conditioned accomodations! But if you keep talking about speedo's and thongs, I think I will have to sleep in my hot, bug infested tent next year! ;-)
But seriously- you bring up a good point, even though we are trying to kill as many deer as possible to benefit the landowners and HSH, it is a very laid back type of atmosphere! I think my favorite part of the day is coming back to camp to see what came in(deer), talking to other hunters about what they saw and where and making a game plan for the afternoon hunt! And of course talking about the inevitable humorous moments while on stand and busting each others chops a little bit! ;-) Then a few hrs later watching the "5C ARMY" disperse to their appointed positions to do it all again!
I have to admit at the mid-point of our hunt this year(on Fri at lunchtime) when we had ZERO deer in the cooler I was wondering if all of our scouting and planning was going to pay off.(especially after killing 6 deer on the first day last year in similarly hot conditions). But everyone did a great job of adjusting tactics to the conditions and we not only matched, but SURPASSED last year! (8) So great job to everybody- as good bowhunters always do, we adapted and overcame some pretty big obstacles!
Curtis- I just saw your post. Thanks for the kind words. It is always great to meet new members at these type of UBP events!(just ANOTHER thing to look forward to) Glad you had a good time and we look forward to seeing you next year! Hope you don't mind me posting that picture of your son- it was just too cute NOT to post! ;-)
Curtis, thanks for the kind words. Was a absolute measure meeting you and was thrilled to see you get a deer. Welcome to the ubp and a part of the 5c hunt. Look forward to seeing you next year as well as maybe at some other events
This years 5C doe hunt was another event for the books. Every year we come up with new "firsts" and that is one of the pleasures we take in hosting this event. The boys put on a first class hunt again, and it seems I was not missed one bit! A BIG Thank You again, to Dan, Perry, Gary, Andy, Steve and Dick and everyone else who had a hand in helping out this past weekend.
WE ARE THE UBP
If you are not a member, consider joining us, and help promoted bowhunting in a positive light
OOOPPS I think I missed thanking YOU, Joe!! Thank you!!!
Joe- it may have SEEMED that way, but you were CERTAINLY missed this year, (at least for the first couple days!) And just the fact that you drove 2 days to get home from Wyoming so you could be in camp the very next day speaks volumes about your dedication to our organization! Thank you for setting a fine example and for everything you do for UBP!
