I just realized no one (CrusaderDad is slacking) has started a meat pole yet for this season. Theres been a few pics posted in various random threads but it's difficult to remember which ones where.

So.....please share your success, pics, set up and stories here.

Go get them ladies and gentlemen!

I finally got a shiras cow moose tag and was fortunate enough to fill it. It was a fabulous hunt with a long time friend who also filled his cow tag. My guess is that I put 250# of meat in the freezer. The Robertson Fatal Styk came through again as well as the trusty Traditonal Only shafts and the ever deadly Wensel Woodsman broadhead.

Quick story about my buddy’s deer. He shot one small deer with a gun when he was a kid. Then gave up hunting deer for years and moved east. A couple of years ago he came back to MN. I was glad he did. I gave him my bow and bought a new one when he showed interest. Last year he hunted with us without success. So he drove from the twin cities area to Grant Co on September 29th and he got his first deer with a bow about 10 minutes before closing. The deer went 40 yards. He is the friend who shows up to cut trees in March to make food plots and the guy planting trees in the spring next to me. So he earned this deer and I couldn’t be happier for him.

This is doe #2. I found a chunk of VPA land up by my inlaws and thought it looked good, on paper. Got out there and it was beans and corn and a little chunk of woods/marsh. Set up on the edge of the woods/corn with a NW wind at my back. I figured the deer would come from upwind towards the corn, so I would need to chance them winding me once they entered the field. I had a small 7 pointer come downwind from the east, nose in the air but didn't spook. Heard some noise from the west and out came a small doe and a larger one. The doe I shot was quartering away, and when I shot, she ducked and turned into a 10 o'clock position. The shot was high and almost vertical, and the took off in the corn. I heard them crashing through and saw them exit the corn into the woods about 100 yards away. I though the shot was marginable, as I saw her take off with my arrow sticking out. I waited shortly and packed up. No blood at the sight of the shot, so I went to where they exited the corn. I walked the corn rows, and saw my arrow. It was 3/4 covered in bright and bubbly blood. The blood trail was massive into the woods and she lay only 40 yards from where the arrow came out. The shot was high, but I took out the left lung and sliced the heart. 40 minute walk back to the truck for my sled, and a slow and fun walk out with coyotes yipping at me most of the way back.

Some nice work above. Congrats to all. Dandy buck GP. I was lucky enough to get some meat for the freezer this morning when this doe finally presented me with an opportunity. She decided she wanted to figure out what I was, stared me down multiple times, and stuck her nose in the air. The wind was in my favor and despite getting fatigued holding my bow up and trying not to move, I was able to end the game. 20 yd shot and 25 yd recovery.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I got to my stand yesterday around 3:30pm. There was a buck right under my tree when I walked in. I got in my stand thinking that they must be moving and it would be a good sit.

I didn't see anything, around 6pm I heard this buck coming from the East along the hayfield edge. My stand is in the corner of the field. I saw the antlers through the underbrush and I drew back. He stopped broadside about 15 yards in front of me. I let one fly and knew I hit him well. I watched him take off towards the north. He made it about 75 yards. He never left the hayfield. No tracking and I drove the 4 wheeler right to him. It was an awesome night!

My Dad was very excited to see this buck and finally get it into range. He has let a lot of bucks go in the last 10 or so years, so they could grow up. It is not a monster but a mature deer for the area and he figured he is 73 years old and not getting any younger, so he decide to attempt to harvest this deer. He double lunged it and it went about 75 yards before it expired. I think my son was more excited than my father in the whole thing:) My son was with my dad in the ground blind and got to see this buck chase three does, freshen up three scrapes and grunting the whole way. The best part besides the harvest was the fact that 1.5 hours before I was sitting in a stand over standing corn, but decide to move into the woods a little farther to a stand that was 50 yards away. Well this buck chased the doe under the stand that I was sitting in over the field, stopped to freshin up the scrape 20 yards from the first stand. Then decided to run towards my dad and son about 200 yards away. I am so happy that my dad got the chance to shot this buck and not me. For years he always put me in the good spot and hoped that I shot the big buck. I am glad that the roles have reversed and he got the chance this time. I am looking forward to being able to hopefully do this for my son in two years. It was a great weekend filled with great memories.

Many years in and I finally filled a buck tag. Public land buck I had nicknamed snagle-horn. Decoy kept his attention off me sitting on ground. He had rubbed two 6"diameter trees in last few days so figured he was ready to brawl with a half rack decoy. He comes through this funnel almost daily just after dark. Was worried he would be long gone soon chasing does who knows where. Best Halloween for me ever!

Alright here's the story from last night...As much noise as I made carrying decoy in at 330 I felt like such a schmuck. I needed something to keep his attention off me sitting on ground. No stands aloud to be left up and no good trees for s climber. Normally I use decoys on field edges, never realized how hard to keep one quiet walking through brush. Then at 515 a family must have been taking family pictures of Halloween costumes in the neighboring bean field. Could hear their entire conversation, about trick or treat candy and the norm.. thought I'd be skunked. Soon as they left I rattled him in with a few min of spare shooting light. He had a very light grunt that I assumed a small buck was coming. Got 15 yards from decoy facing head on. Head was behind a tree but I could see antler in front of tree as well as his 'snagle horn' behind the tree. That was it. Arrow caught a branch just before him but still made it happen. Maybe 35-45 yard track job

Was able to harvest this beautiful 4.5 year old buck last Friday. I was sitting on the edge between our sanctuary and some CRP. Decided to watch a squirrel a few trees over while giving my eyes a break from staring into the wind. Slowly turned back to center and there he is at 20 yds! He came from the same direction I was just looking at, never saw him. He continued quartering away while I fumbled for my rangefinder. Made it to 37 yds before I was able to stop him and get a shot off. Big leg kick but as he ran off I could see shot was a bit higher and farther back than I wanted. I gave him an hour before I went to take a closer look. Good blood right away, fairly easy blood trail to follow. Found him about 150 yds away. Ended up catchin one lung and liver. Didn't have any time to get overly excited before the shot but boy was I pumped when I found him!

Plan was to only hunt with the recurve this year, but I didn't have an elevated platform to practice from so I built and hunted a bunch of brush blinds. I have a tree stand that needs a ESE wind, which we rarely seem to get, but when it comes, it's a must to hunt this tree. Today we had that wind. So I took the compound out t and took this guy at 5 yards. My best to date. Scored him at a big 8, maybe 9, but Im happy calling him an 8.

Well, the last day of my vacation I decided to tag out. Not the 10 I've been after, but it will eat well. I've been passing on smaller bucks all week and seeing very few does. This guy came through and with my time in the woods being limited till gun season, I decided to take him. 28 yard shot, 60 yard recovery. Public land, no bait, and a recurve, any buck is a trophy with that. I believe I buggered up the 10 on Monday night, and he quit coming through the county land where I was.

Deer was arrowed Oct 27. She passed on 5-6 other bucks. I was a few hundred yards away and saw a ton as well. Hot doe must have been in the area. Her buck was dogging a doe as well. Next afternoon was awesome as well. Been seeing 1-2 bucks per sit since thenβ€”a lot slower. Plenty of nice 2.5 y.o. Deer, rare to see a 3.5 +. All day sit right now.

Great job Landscaper!! But now we expect you to tell us the full story :) lets hear it

05-Nov-17
At 830 am on sunday, the buck came trotting up from behind me. I didnt hear him coming due to the leaves being wet from all the rain. I grabbed my bow just in time to stop him before he got into the thick brush. Unfortunately he stopped behind a 2 foot wide tree. He took a couple more steps and i was able to stop him in a 2 foot shooting window. After i shot he ran 40 yds and stood in the open. I was nervous because i thought i missed. Then he did the wobble. It was a tough 3 days hunting but a great 5 minute end.

I shot this one on Saturday in Polk County. I have passed on many bucks this season including a couple slightly bigger than this. I was holding out for the buck we call the "Big Ten" but he has not made any daytime appearances yet. I am just running out of time given a busy schedule and the gun season approaching.

This buck was shot on my property in Northern Polk County by a guest on Saturday 11/4 around 10:30 am. The guest was sitting in a permanent treated wood stand that is freestanding, with a floor only 7 feet from the ground. It was hurriedly dogging a fawn, and never broke stride after it was shot. It continued to follow the fawn for about 90 yards, then stumbled the last 10 yards and fell over. Double lung shot, using a Mathews bow and a Rage expandable. Blood trail was visible from the tree stand. Buck green scored 139.

Man, with all the newbies posting plus all the regulars it is hard to keep track of all these deer being seen and killed. That's a good thing.

I got my buck quartered out. Still need to cape or find someone to cape the neck/head before I can cross the state line. But that's a good thing since I still have a doe tag I plan to fill.

Smokey, I am going to have to install a gps tracking device on your truck if you keep seeing so many deer up there.

My biggest bow buck to date on our family farm. My vacation started on Fri but the full moon shut the deer movement down. I was struggling to see anything. I got in my stand at 3 pm tues and heard a twig snap at 3:50. I looked over my shoulder expecting to see a squirrel when I saw him coming less than 25 yds. I shot him at 14 yds through both lungs. He went 75 yds and toppled over. From when I saw him, the shot, and him tipping over was about 3 minutes total. I was overcome with emotion. Good luck guys, it can happen fast!

I took this buck on Monday morning on public land in NW WI. He dogged a doe to the base of my tree and I shot him at 10 yards, he only made it another 20 yards at a full run before expiring.

I finished cutting meat today, 83.5lb of clean venison. Only two pounds less than my big buck last year which I felt was a bigger body. I knew this one had a big body, but really am surprised since based on antlers I figured him for a 2.5yo. Antlers measure to 83" gross, 15.5" inside spread. He had a surprisingly low amount of fat, he must have been working hard to chase does before coming by me.

Very nice buck,...better than nice! Great buck! Congratulations. Hit might have been in femoral artery as noted but more likely in pyloric artery if arrow entered in gut area as it seems in photo. A hit in the pyloric artery is just as good as a hit in the aortic or femoral arteries. Severing either or any one of them results in a dead deer very quickly,...if any one of them is only nicked or partly cut death may or may not occur or may take longer. Regardless, great deer! Congrats!

Was very fortunate to be able to shot this nice buck at 33 yards Saturday night. I made a not so good shot at it and hit it too far back and low. I noticed he was walking with a hunch in his back and was not walking very fast and stopping a lot. I lost sight of him about 80 yards away as he walked into the woods. My dad and I decided to let him be until Sunday morning. It was a very long sleepless night along with a very sick feeling that I made a bad shot and might not find this deer. We got up Sunday morning and waited until 8:30am to start tracking it. We found blood where I shot it and marked the arrow from the night before. We were able to follow blood the whole way and found him expired about 250 yards from where I shot him. It was indeed a low and far back shot, but was good enough to get the job done. The good lord was on my side Saturday and Sunday.

Yeah Jeff, I've shot bigger bucks and I've also shot smaller bucks. I also hate to make excuses for shooting a smaller buck or look down on any buck because it's not as big as others. That being said if things would have gone a little differently (i.e. I wouldn't have choked) I would have posted a photo of a much bigger buck. I had a couple screw ups that were painful reminders that I'm human and sometimes make stupid mistakes. My screw ups had me questioning what the F is wrong with me and had Les playing the role of grief counselor . I had a great hunt, spent a lot of time seeing and hunting in some new country, spent some quality time with my buddy Les and I came home with a P&Y class buck. After my miscues of the previous couple weeks, it was a mental victory and I was very happy to kill this buck and that's all that really matters. I know you're just poking fun and I get it but I think I'm at the point where the kill is much less important to me than the actual hunt. If I didn't have to go back to work I probably wouldn't have shot this buck and I would still be there hunting; I wish it didn't have to end...

11/4/17 I put up a stand late yesterday. Due to the rain I elected not to hunt the morning, but got into stand about 1:00 pm. At 2:45 PM I saw my 1st deer coming from the north. There was a east wind. Close view with the binoculars showed it to be a nubbin buck. He kept looking back where he came from but I couldn't see anything else coming. As the nubbin moved off, sure enough another deer came from the same general area. This guy had a fork and brow on one side and 3 tines and a brow tine on the other. His spread was maybe 12". Just a young buck. As this one moved closer to within 10 yards, I saw that he had a radio collar on his neck. He got a pass. Then it was pretty quiet until about 4:00 pm when I saw a deer coming from the east up from the valley below me. I could see it was a buck and a little better than the last one. I grabbed by Mathews Halon just in case. While scoping it at about 40 yards with the binoculars I could see a couple of tines that looked to be about 9" or longer. I decided that if this buck came closer and gave me a shot I would try to take him. When he got to 30 yards he turned broadside. I drew back and followed his slow walk with my sight pin. When I saw the kill zone I released and watched my arrow sail thru his mid section just in front of his rear legs. Darn it, guts! I felt sick. The buck ran back to the bottom where I watched him stand for about 15 minutes. Then over the coarse of the next 40 minutes I watched him slowly climb the ridge across the valley and over the top and out of sight. He went out of sight at about 150 yards. I spent the next 10 minutes gathering my gear and descending my stand. When I got to my arrow, it had no blood on it, but it smelled terrible to confirm my worst nightmare. Probably hit thru the intestines. I couldn't see any blood on the ground. From the rain earlier and the mist there was so much dripping off of the trees that any blood was likely to be gone. Either way I elected to sneak out of the area until the morning. I called my daughter whose boyfriend is Bowsite QDM's nephew. It just so happened that I was blessed with QDM being in town, so he graciously offered his tracking dog Holly to his nephew to help me recover my deer. The next morning Holly made quick work of the scent trail did her job and followed directly to the buck's bed about an additional 60 yards beyond where I lost sight of him. Luck was on my side in so many ways and I feel so fortunate. I would have likely found the bed without the extra help, but it is greatly appreciated! A huge thanks to QDM and Holly.

"I guess I need to try harder a lot of nice bucks guys."

Don't let the photo's above discourage you BNbow. A lot of them are one mans imagination. Its quite easy to make up a handle then go shop the internet for bow kills and post them up. Its part of a very very deep undercover mission on his part. I would have thought you were him as well but was able to certify you are not.

"Fletch why the blocked out face and cancer stick?"

Long ago in the annals of time brought to us via a dial up network and fiber optic wire came a man so great I am not even fit to wash his feet. Bowsite had never seen a hunter of his caliber(nor will they ever) and he was a word smith to boot. For me it got to the point where I wanted to be him so badly I tried to emulate him but to no avail. In the end I just decided to block out my face because I fell short and I could never be the hunter Serb was. Serb always had a lung dart dangling out of his yap so it occurred to me if I blocked my face out and put a lung dart in my mouth maybe just maybe some would think I was him. I actually think its working. In honor of the great one I have posted the only known picture left to exist of the Bow God. This picture sends chills down my spine and up my leg. Everything is so well placed and there for a reason. Dead buck, Truck bed, Lung Dart, Coyote chewed ass end, and Cowboy hat.........Please come back Serb!

Fletch, Serb would be delighted to sell you a house out in Colorado.

Helgermite, first thing I thought of when I saw your handle was my dad and I rounding up some of the best fishing bait that exists. That was back in the late 60's.

Nice buck and love the story. Glad it all worked out for you. If you hunt deer long enough it is going to happen but by doing things right based on what you saw you made the good outcome.
