Well it's that time of year guys! Rifle opened up yesterday here in NH. I will be heading down to camp right after my 1230 class, and hopefully get in for a quick afternoon sit today. There will be 5 of us this year. My father and two of his buddies. Me and one of my buddies. I just got a call from my dad. They are already tracking one! Franky shot a small buck around 9 this morning. I hope to bring you guys some action from the big woods of NH! Tough hunting, but there are some monsters running around up here.

Wow long night. The dog got on the trail right away. Took us about 500 yards and we found no blood or anything. We went back to last blood to see what the dog would do. Took the same exact trail so the guy let the dog do what it wanted to do. About 1/2 mile into the track we found it's bed. Bumped it out of its bed. We backed out and he's coming back in am with the dog. My buddy and I are hunting tmrw morning while franky, my dad, and the dog guy track. Trying to stay optimistic but it's not looking good. We will see tmrw. Good luck to u fellas that can make it out tomorrow.

Freezing!

We are going to still hunt the south side of the hill mid day. Wind is out of the NNW. They clear cut it about 5 years ago. It's overgrown and the deer like to bed in it. Hoping to get a crack at one that may be bedded on one of the ledges out of the wind and in the sun. I'm thinking the does will be there so hopefully the bucks are too.

The other guys just got back on the track. Really hoping they find it.

From: Moons22

Well the dog tracked that deer well over a mile. A few pin drops here and there after the spot we bumped it for. Sucks.

We're all back out for the afternoon but this wind is not fun!

Only sightings so far have been a cow moose and a black bear! Where are all the deer??? I saw the moose this am followed by a guy in a blaze orange jump suit 20 mins later. I whistled and he left. We are making game plans for the afternoon. Should be a good one!

Here's a pic of the cabin.

I never rifle hunted in my life,,,, I always thought it would be cool to go rifle hunting just to check it out but I'd love to bring a vintage military rifle like a No1Mk4 or even a K98,, my Cousin would hunt in Maine with a Italian Carcano 6.5 same type of rifle that shot JFK and he said it did some damage on the deer but max range with open sights was 75yrds,,,, wow I just zoned out on rifle hunting but good luck out there..

From: Moons22

I've never got one with a rifle either. We're usually good for one deer during deer camp week, but it looks like franky already blew our chances........ franky!!!!! 40 yards with a 308 with scope and that deer got away! We thInk he grazed the bottom of it

From: arch2112
11-Nov-17
Used to go to Maine so I could use my rifles once in awhile. Marlin 35 Rem is my fav but I have a lot more. 7600 in 270 and Ruger Deerfield in 44 mag are others I would bring. I need to head north one year and dust off a rifle. Good times with a bunch of friends. Hope you have more chances.

Custom built TC 30/06 2 lb trigger pull stainless steel. Handloaded ammo by me. Hornady 150gr bullets. Have just had a serious complication from spinal surgery. May not be able to hunt again.

Arch the 35 Marlin is my favorite. Would love to take it deer hunting.

From: arch2112

Spike, mine was a special run in stainless and a carbine length barrel. Beautiful gun and handy in the woods. No problem carrying it all day. I would hand load for that gun but Core-Lokt's are a great woods round and at the distances I would shot, they were accurate.

From: spike78

Arch, the Corelokts are great but the Hornady Leverevolution shot unreal with touching bullet holes. Give them a try.

This afternoons set. Behind the tree line in the right hand side of this field it drops way off into a swamp. A lot of runs cutting through the tall grass. We will see what happens

Here is my view. About 50 acres of swamp behind this tiny field. Small stretch of hardwoods to my right, and a cut corn field at my 5 o'clock probably 200 yards. The deer have eaten every last piece of corn in that field so I think they'll be hitting this tonight. A few French rubs and a new scrape in the right hand corner..

I could see where someone had dragged a deer out on the opposite side of this piece where we park. Hoping I can leave the same trail tonight lol

Thanks for the well wishes boys. While up at Ny camp this wk I had some complications from a yr. old neck fusion surgery. It was a 5 month recovery from hell. I began to lose feeling in my arms. My right one especially. It went completely numb and the nerve pain was excruciating. I have medication and was eating it like candy without much results. I toughed it out for a couple days till I couldn't take the pain anymore. The neurosurgeon is in waterbury ct. about a 6.5 hr drive from camp. I decided to make a run for home. In MA. It took me 9hrs to make a 5hr drive cuz I had to stop and scream from the pain a few times. I finally made it back and the drugs are starting to help. I'm just off the razors edge now and supposed to be getting an emergency appt. with him mon. The possible cure is a second operation to widen the holes in the spine that the nerves run through down to your arms....no guarantees though sonny.....we could kill ya or paralyze ya...... oh yeah and if it works get ready for another 5 months outa work. How wouldya like this vacation? And the best worst part was the action was the best. I was getting shot opps. almost every day. The trail cams were showing the bigger bucks starting to move too. If you followed the live hunts there was action almost every hunt with drslyr patiently waiting for the chance at the big buck that he may never again get.....

Moons that woodsmaster is an icon. My grandfather handed me down a Remington woodsmaster in .308. It's so accurate and semi-auto makes any follow up shots very quick if needed. I only killed one deer with mine the first year he gave it to me and I also took out 3 coyotes once in about 4 seconds. Man seeing that gun reminds me of my grandfather. Good post.
