My guess is that deer was behind another that was shot at. I expect everyone here checks behind their target before shooting.

ya...that's bad...I would never even think of taking a shot like that...I would rather let it walk and try to get it another day.... I have more feelings and respect for deer than most people i meet in the world....

I would never try a shot like that, but if done right that would be the most ethical shot - instant lights out. Problem is if you miss it's a horrible wound.
