For all you brave guys sitting in the high winds. This is two mature pines in my neighbors yard that just broke off today. This is the 3rd and 4th pine he had come down in two high wind days. Ain’t getting my ass up in a tree during windy days.

Or if you do make it a stout hardwood.

Wow! That'll make you think twice about what tree to pick.

I don’t think it matters. These two trees were fairly small in diameter but his other trees were absolute giants probably 3 feet across. Don’t forget that carpenter ants love to hollow out pines that is how the big one fell. And if you are in an oak a pine could be close by. Those trees snapped at roughly 20 feet up. I could not imagine being harnessed to a tree that snaps where you are sitting. That would get the butt pucker factor going!

Tricky business these trees. Was talking to a tree guy recently he was limbing some big oaks in my neighbors yard. He said between severe lack of rain two years ago and the infestation of moths this summer, otherwise healthy looking trees are in bad shape and weak on the inside. He expects a busy winter with more downfall than usual. Be safe guys

What, do you want to live forever?
We had 5 or 6 big, mature red oaks snap off 8-15' off the ground. Apparently sometimes the wind whipping around the hill we live on twists trees with enough force to snap them. There are 4 in this picture. And that is on a deer run! Well, open canopy maybe I can make it a food plot next year!

That is a great spot to put a stand. Deer should be munching on those bad boys.

+ 1 to what spike said. We had a big icestorm a few years ago that felled a lot of trees on top of one hill. That became the place to hunt for the rest of the season!

+2 Spikes point... Both the ice storm, and then Halloween blizzard in this area a few years later (2011) caused some amazing draw for the deer.

My only ladder stand (the kids talked me into it) overlooks that devastation.
