In 1996, with my children becoming hunting age and after a number of good years trapping I was able to purchase some land for hunting and other activities. My cabin that I already purchased in 1975 on trapping money sits on 5 acres 8 miles away. This is going to be a pictorial of some of the things that we do. I hope some of you will start your own thread as we really enjoyed them on the QDMA forums when they were around. The first 3 years that we had the property we left as it was but it needed to be logged as it was very open without any understory.

With the proceeds from logging out the junk wood we rented a bulldozer and a high hoe to create some openings to let some sun in.

Trapper, you sure aren't going to get much for trapping money the way the market is now. But, those years of the late 70's and the ones we just went through about 5 years ago were worth the effort.

Trapper, you really went all out to improve that property.
I think I was getting 3.50 for rats back in the late 60s and early 70s. Then college and real work happened and I was too far from home to do any trapping.

A guess on the apples, Honeygold and Haralson?
Very nice pics and awesome what you did with that land. I wonder who it was that mentioned water. All creatures need it. I just wish the coon bathing in my water hole would step in a live trap. I got one of the 5 during the warm spell we had several weeks ago. Even worse I only got a few deer pics this year and they were all the couple of little 1 and 2 year old bucks, doe, and fawns that live here.

A nice journey presented by Trapper. Good photos. We saw people and progress. But if we looked closely we could see one man's connection with his piece of land and how he shared this bond with family and friends in a way that benefitted all. Good thread Trapper. Revealing. Interesting. I hope you can find more photos to post in future days to continue the journey. Great job. (P.S. - I really liked that game camera photo taken on 11-11-16 of the wide racked buck. We know you hunted him, did you ever get him?)
From: Trapper
22-Dec-17
Case, yes I hunted that buck hard for 3 years. No I didn’t get him but better yet, one of my best buddy’s got him. If you remember, I took quite a bit of flak last year on the score by people who are no longer on this site.

Honeygold is absolutely without a doubt my favorite eating apple. Full of flavor. People I share my apples with keep asking me to bring them more Honeygold. Fortunately both my HG trees were loaded this year. I still have a few in the frige but the outer layer is getting a little soft so they need to be knife peeled. I still have some Wolf River and Haralson hanging, up high, onto the trees. The deer check them out every evening to see if any have fallen.

Nice photos - We can see the work you did on your property has paid off, you & the family have been quite successful over the years. Congratulations. Must be some of the genetics in your area...to my eye, a couple of the racks look quite high. Makes 'em appear all that much larger! BTW - photo debate? Naw! Glad you did it.

Thanks Case. Your eyes are correct. Not much generally for spread by me but tine length more than makes up for it. Where I grew up on the Horicon Marsh it was opposite, 3 1/2 year old bucks had greater than 18" spread but not much for tine length. Yes there are exceptions to every rule though.
