With the warmer temps next week, anyone planning any winter projects? I'm going to cut brush in our orchard and cut the dead branches out of our apple trees. I wait till late winter for pruning. I'm also looking to do some hinge cutting in an area that is to open in the woods.

Clean up failed hinge cutting attempts. I know not to do it in sub zero Temps but try it every year when I get bored. That's if there's any free time, to much lost work in last couple weeks... we'll be pushing some long hours at work this week if forecast is correct

Maybe I will try some hinge cuts on some popple trees. If I fail no big deal. I have some trees that have been naturally laid flat by other larger trees falling on them.

Start a hinge cut/brush wall along our east property line where the neighbors have set up shooting houses 3 feet from the property line.

Rut- have you considered a row of Norway Spruce? They take 3 yrs to really take off and grow but it might be worth it. This is one I planted 3 yrs ago. The deer will browse them so I cage them now.

Tweed-really depends what your trying to do with your hinge. Some I do low to block or funnel travel. I often bring a ladder and hinge high for tunnels for me to use as access.
Along the road at our cabin I hinged many trees about 14 feet up to thicken things up from traffic until the new spruce trees fill in.
My 2 tips, that i do even though i know i shouldn't- It's really hard to do when crazy cold outside, snap to easy. And don't use your climbing tree stand to hinge from.

When I'm hinge cutting my goal is primarily to create thermal mass and secondly browse. It's a hardwood oak maple forest.
