I've seen bigger cigars.

Sorry, its side ways.
Sorry, its side ways.
I had 5 bucks on the last camera pull that had either lost both sides or at least one antler. Who else has shed hunting as a passion. Skyy and I will be out searching starting the 20th of January.

I've had at least one first year buck that dropped both sides as well as a 2 year old that dropped half and another first year that dropped half on cameras from last week. That's a small percentage of the bucks I had on camera last week, so they're starting, but have a ways to go.

I got a yellow lab pup in May of this year. All I want her to do is shed hunt. I got Jerry Thoms book on "training your dog to hunt for shed deer antlers." We have been practicing with training antlers and real deer sheds from years past. I hope she works out.

Raspy, Congrats. Wait till she finds that first one for you. I was the proudest when mine found the one like a cigar.

I checked my records for the last 50 years . You should see that pile . Earliest is a 10 point that shed his rack on Dec 23rd 1977
Latest was a 10 point that walked past me while I'll was gardening on March 12th 1993 . I wish my newest Lab could shed hunt but there is no way I'm letting her wander away from me in Northern Lincoln cty & become Wolf bait .

sharpspur, post up some photos of that! Not too many folks get to find an elk shed here in Wisconsin! Were you looking for them or just happen upon it? Congrats either way on that find!

Trail cam pics with them still on, but another guy on the lease saw a 1/2 rack Sunday night. One of the pics had two baskets fighting actually. Theirs must be on pretty good yet.

My cameras are showing just a fork now with both, but the others I had on camera have shed three weeks ago.

I have a year old chocolate lab that is obsessed with the shed antlers in my house. Hoping she will actually be good at finding them. What techniques have you guys used for teaching your dogs how to shed hunt? I'm thinking hide them around the house or outside and try and get them to find them. When/if they do, they get treats. Any other recommendations?

We have about 7o acres of woods so I hate to go in their and blow all the deer out. Every yr cams show 90% of bucks still holding in early feb. Mid feb-mid march is primetime for us.

Trapper- nice finds but you better not be pushing skyy to hard... She's got precious cargo on board! Some of us anxiously waiting for our puppies counting down to delivery day. Then again maybe this way they already know how to find sheds :)

Jeffd, I started out with tossing sheds for her as a puppy, always saying "Get the Bone" whenever I threw. Thend I started hiding them on the yard in plain sight on the lawn. Always telling her to get the bone. Then I started hiding under the shrubs and told her the same. There always a piece of jerky for her when she brought it back. Then I started putting them out at night and wouldn't have her look for 24 or 48 hours later. Always praising her and giving her a treat. Whenever I go shed hunting I throw a practice one for her to find right away to get her fired up. Always praise and treats. Good Luck!

northbound, I will be easy on her. I will allow her to only find 3 a day. That's why I'm starting shed hunting so soon before it gets good. I will be putting her on bedrest starting February 15th. I think she likes shed hunting better than pheasants. The last litter were all named after liquor, Gin, Whiskey, Tequila etc.... This time it will be Coors, Pabst, Hamms, Falstaff........ LOL

Daughter hit a six point with her truck yesterday. Said she watched one of the antlers go flying on impact.

I have multiple pics of this little guy. I bet he'll be happy when he finally sheds.
I'm wondering if his skull got cracked and if his antler will grow up or forward next year...?

Thanks for the concern guys but yes, she fared much better than the deer. Some front end damage to her truck and the deer never made it beyond the ditch next to the road.

I had mentioned in another thread that the 1.5 YOlds were dropping back around dec 18-20. On Jan 10 I saw a mature with a rack still. Must be age related.

saw my 14 pointer on Tuesday, with all the others,,,,, If I get him, it will be something, biggest buck I have seen around my house in years,,,,, He was about 60 yards from me, in an open field........
although I had a cross bow, that would not be an ethical shot, at least for me,,,, I would need him inside of 40.......................
but just to see him, was good enough for me,,,,,,
