If rabbits are any indicator of how our deer herd is doing - the deer should be in fine shape coming into the spring.
The rabbits I'm catching with my hawks are FAT! Rabbits are still incased in fat. Fat on top of the shoulders, fat covered kidneys and intestines. Little evidence of them chewing bark at all.
I suspect our deer are doing well based upon what I am seeing!

What's a rabbit again? LOL Haven't seen but one or two over the past ten years here in the north country where I live.

Funny you bring this up...just last night I watched two rabbits messing around my burn pile and thought to myself they were the biggest fattest healthiest looking rabbits I've seen. Must be mating season because they looked like they were "fighting".

So far the winter severity index is showing mild statewide for deer.
