What part of the state you interested in? Best place to start is going to the DEEP Deer Harvest report and look at the numbers taken at the different state land areas. I've hunted the northwest corner of the state for almost 50 years because I like the bigger areas and hills.
Good luck

Some may be referring to the size of their waist and not the deer they take.

I've seen some really nice bucks in NE and East Central CT. Regrettably I've not had a shot, or missed them all :) Then again, in 8-10 years it's probably only 4-5 total... So while they may be there, you are not seeing them all the time for sure.
Which brings us back to SW CT. Or really, anywhere on the southern quarter... Seems deer densities really go up in those areas, and access challenges yield some big antlered deer as well.

Actually, no deer in Eastern Connecticut. Nope. Zip, zero, nada. Sorry fellas. I head Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York are doing well with their herds. But not us. ;o)

Any public hunting area is going to have deer. My advice is pick the biggest chunk with of land that has some good elevation changes within driving distance and get to know every inch of it. Study maps, turkey hunt in the spring, squirrel hunt in the fall, hike it in between. Cover the ground and don't bounce around between a lot of forests unless your retired and have unlimited time to burn.
My opinion the best public place to hunt is the place you know the best and have confidence in. That only comes with time spent there and trial and error.

Try Cockaponset. Lots of places to hunt. Try going down the trail to the big rock. Cross the stream. Head through the pines. Setup next to edge of the Mountain Laurel. Good spot to see deer.
