Turkey hunting

Has anybody every turkey hunted the public ground around soldier creek wilderness area, peterson wma, or fort robinson sp? Thinking about doing a spurr of the moment hunt for a merriams. I hunt easterns here in wv all the time. Just want to try to get some diff birds but can't afford a guided hunt. Any info would be greatly appreciated! I have been talking to a coupe diff game wardens n biologists from that area also. I have a few spots in mind to try but hard to scout the areas living thousands of miles away
