EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The DNR says a wild deer has tested positive for chronic wasting disease in western Eau Claire County near the Town of Brunswick.

The DNR says the detection of the deer will renew the county's existing three-year baiting and feeding ban starting May 1.

The department says because the CWD positive result was found within 10 miles of Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Pepin and Trempealeau counties, these counties will now be designated as CWD-affected counties.

The two-year baiting and feeding bans for these five counties will also start on May 1.

There was at least one resolution about CWD passed in nearly every county at the spring hearings last week.

Yesterday I sent an email to my Legislators and the members of Senate and Assembly committees.

It is frustrating that there is overwhelming support for stricter controls on game farms as well as more effort put into protecting wild deer but the Legislature just caters to business. They are putting our sporting heritage and the State's economy at risk.

YES, no baiting here finally!!! Can't wait to see all the illegal piles that will still be here though.

You can't win Les . I'm in a no bait zone now & 2 guys told me . " No problem , we'll use peas & Oats so passerbys & airplanes can't see them " .

Ruger is right Les, its a mentality that is like a disease,,,,,,,,,, now with the wardens covering the state parks, good luck on enforcement,,,,,,,, The DNR does not control game farms, that is DATCP,,,,,,,,,,,,,

in a perfect world, a game farm would have double fencing, movement of deer would be very limited, under strict rules, if at all,,,,,,, they would cover there own losses, and they would get rid of baiting statewide,,,,,,,,,,

the deer in the north, do not need any corn, they just need a chain saw

I was excited to see that also Les. Now we will just have to be vigilant about turning the illegal piles in when we see them.

Unfortunately the wardens will never be able to keep up with enforcement. They have already been directed that their primary focus for the summer will be park activities. After that they will have such a backlog of their real work it will be impossible to even scratch the surface of them.

Ban baiting statewide and be done with it.

I agree with the sentiment budbow, but we wouldn't be done with anything. Baiting in Wisconsin is such an ingrained epidemic that it would be easier to ween a druggie off heroine than some of these guys off their beloved corn piles. It'll only get worse if they ban it..

No baiting on public lands is a huge win for the private land foot plot specialists, QDM guys have to love this.

I sent that article to a friend of mine who is a CWD guru of sorts. Here's what he noted.....

"What the article does not say is that the WDNR only sampled 89 deer in Eau Claire County in 2017/18, so the fact that one of them was positive makes it highly likely that there are a bunch more positive deer in Eau Claire County that are not being detected, due to low sampling levels. The one that was identified was in the clinical stage, meaning that it was infected as a fawn, which makes it highly likely that other members of it's family group were infected, as well. The WDNR's passive approach to testing is resulting in a distorted picture of how widespread and what the prevalence rates actually are in Wisconsin. "

I voted for the guy, but Walker seems to have no interest in wild life science, CWD, or the DNR as a whole for the most part,,,,, why I do not know, but it starts at the top, and there is really not much effort anymore in CWD study,,,,,,,

Not to say they learned much from the past, I do not know, but it sure is spreading, that is an undisputed fact,,,,,,,,,,,

That was another nice thing about physical registration of a deer. They could take what they needed at the registration stations.

The DNR downplays CWD to avoid revenue loss.

From: skookumjt
19-Apr-18
^^^That is an ignorant statement. The DNR's interest is in minimizing CWD in every way possible because it is going to destroy hunting and deer hunting is the cash cow for the agency.

The agency wants to ban feeding. The Governor and the Legislature relax the rules. The DNR wants to increase testing. The Governor and the Legislature squeeze their funding dry.

CWD has been in WI a lot longer then any of us know, including the DNR. I think it is spread more by having to many deer in one area then by baiting or feeding. Untilled fields probably have just as much to do with spreading the disease as feeding and food plots do. It is hard to believe all the laws that could come out of CWD if hunters allow. So watch out what you wish for people. You can say "hurray" for a baiting ban but there is more coming down the pipe. That ban is just a start.

Skook all do respect but the things you talk about are extremely important but not life important. Maybe to some who make livings in the great outdoors but not to all. I sat in a meeting with my manager and he stated he doesn't understand why we waste so much money in our state on forestry and should sell it off to whoever would buy it! He is clueless and his kids have no knowledge of outdoors.

That is his perception of the great things the state has to offer. I know you don't like the current administration but down here in the south business is booming. We are building business after business to the point we don't have enough people to hire. My taxes are the lowest and the state is in good shape for the most part.
