I plan to put some bait out (mostly beef fat with some scraps of actual meat mixed in but I would say it is 95% fat). I plan to start putting it out a few days before the next full moon about a week from now. (don't want to attract them while the remaining snow could put the local deer at more risk) I won't put much out, don't want to fill them up, just keep them interested in the easy food. I am thinking bait because I suck at calling them and I do not have any electronic calls. I am better at calling turkeys so I might use turkey calls, I have had yote come in while turkey hunting before.
So, the questions are, do you think this is a strategy that could work? I won't have a license but since it is on my own property I don't need one. Is there anything illegal about it? If I do kill any do you think it would help or hurt my chances to get more if I leave the dead ones lay right there? I will be in a hang on tree stand that is only about 8 feet above ground. Would I be better off in that stand or would sitting on the ground be better? Should I do the 'hunting' before or after dark? If daytime then I wouldn't need to worry about moon phase.
I would rather be on the ground than in a tree and make sure they can’t get down wind of you in your set up.
As far as hunting over bait I’m not sure it’s legal in WI. For predators and would check with the DNR. I’ve never tried it so never looked into it.
