All 2nd hand but anyone hear about that one? Not sure if the guy is OK.
It did create, for me, an odd question. You can "fake" a lot today. social media and insta everything... people can take pic's of stuff and create illusions. But then a part of me wonders if a kid like this, felt like "everyone" was killing a turkey and internally created pressure which caused him to do this. Not an excuse... But the way society is going, it makes me wonder if that was a factor.
I believe our society is a reflection of our current values. There is a great range of behavior from Evil through thoughtless and even a fair amount of Goodness.
"Society" ( average experience /tendencies) is experiencing a great divide and it is not just blatant evil against goodness. It is mindless, self-gratifying zombie-like behavior against a moral and intellectually driven life.
It is more from our failure to commit to decent principles that have left so many floundering and malleable. That void is inevitably filled with the trash that passes for acceptable options.
When we live as though there is accountability to something, we are ever-conscious of our thoughts and actions... The opposite is also true.
And suicide rate increased dramatically as well.
It made me think of a ESPN Mag story of a girl who went to U Penn on a scholarship for soccer or Lax, everyone thought she was so happy, but she just created this illusion of happiness to, as you noted Ungie, keep up with the Jones's... She posted a gorgeous pic of a tree with xmas lights she'd just taken on her Facebook, noting how awesome it was, moments before leaving her family a note and jumping off a parking garage. She felt she was under massive pressure to be as good as everything and everyone she was seeing... Failing to realize that people mostly post only the best or worst parts of life... they filter what they post. And the result, is more bullshitake media than reality media for darn sure.
Kids though, and a lot of adults, lack filter's to "check" what they see...
Couldnt help but wonder about that with this kid who shot the turkey from a car...
Example, every time I went fishing or fiddle-heading the past two weeks I left the woods with pockets full of other peoples trash, all of it from fishermen. I find it interesting that except for the safety aspect of shooting from the road. the littering bothers me more. Tekoa
My point is, that any organization that upholds a standard of decency and support is not the typical social media experience.
Ungie , I would add to your good comment/analysis that making mistakes and poor decisions are indeed inherent but not self-correcting on its own. It is the acceptance of that delinquent behavior as wrong and undesirable that changes the course of one's future actions. That is most often manifest in an environment that is a positive influence. Hence the need for it and a foundation for the argument against those crucibles of wickedness elsewhere.
Tekoa and Jeb, That littering thing with fishing or hunting is true. The one that gets me most though - at least for fishing - are the guys who follow stocking trucks and then do the old: catch a limit, put it in the trunk or bring it home, go to the same or another spot and catch another limit... Repeat. Pisses me off.
When I was like 15 I was fishing and standing in the water under a bridge to get a better drift for my fly. I almost had a heart attack when it sounded like someone dropped a barrel in the water about 10 feet to my right... Then I realized what happened, when the next bunch of trout and water dumped over the side of the bridge almost hitting my rod tip. The truck drove off, and within a couple minutes, there were 4-5 "grown" men crowding each other to fish for those trout. Ugh.
Same spot another day, I am fishing the upstream side and a guy is in the prime spot on the down stream side. He's seeming quite friendly and chatting, then holds up a string of gorgeous trout, including a 18-20" brookie. The next thing caused my teenage self to almost lose my marbles: "Hey, I have to go to work, these will probably spoil in my trunk, you want em?" It wasnt a joke. He was dead serious. And as he walks off, he was probably (seemed to be at least) a bit startled that an audacious teen would suggest that if he knew he was just killing the fish and not eating them, he should have LET THEM GO!
Those events were pre internet being a common thing, and well prior to any social media I'm aware of.
Hunting wise, it's the jerk's who dump a carcass at a trail head to get rid of it after butchering. The same hunter is really quick to say: "People are jerks for posting all the land around here..." Hmmm, Wonder Why Mr Smarty?!
Makes you wonder about some people???
"Iron Eyes Cody " was really an Italian- American named Espera De Corti, the son of an arranged marriage.
In 1970 he rolled a fake tear down his cheek that grabbed American sympathy and brought focus to the "Ecology movement" Which in turn produced "Earth Day" and "Keep America Beautiful" Which sported the slogan "People start pollution: people can stop it"
