Well it's 1230 amand I just got off work. Alarm is set for 345. Giving it one last shot up here in Nh before I come home on Sunday. Goood luck if any of you guys are heading out
Good luck moons! I just had three come in and strut at my decoy. Was trying to get them to,come in for an hour. Finally got them to commit with a purr and a cluck at the end annnnnnnd I somehow effing missed. Actually had to laugh at myself. Don't know if I didn't get the gun mounted correctly or what. Oh well! Good morning none the less so far.
good luck..i'm sitting in office.
Office time for me... May or may not get out again. Never really enjoyed week 4 other than as a walk in the woods - which is never bad :)... Week 3 is ok, but after a great first 10~ days, life has been a bit more hectic. May stick to the MTB and fly rod until September...
Regardless, it's fun as heck to see how things are going for others - keep posting up folks.
Ahhhhh I blew it as well! Will type story later when I get the laptop going. Fun morning thougg
Today might have been my last chance for the season also. I just couldn't pull my ass out of bed at 3:45. On another note, I have no idea how those of you who sit in front of a computer all day get anything done. I have to write some menus on my comp once or twice a month. It's the same story everytime, type a couple words, check bowsite for updates, type a couple more, check again. Not the most productive process, lol.
I started my morning at a log landing for a recently cut 100 acres. Had seen birds here in the past. Got in at o'dark thirty and set up all my decoys. Waiting on that first gobble. Well, 530 came and I had not heard a gobble. I let out a few yelps and BANG 30 yards to my right there he is in the tree. I knew I was screwed. He stayed in the tree until 615 when he flew about 500 yards away from me into the clear cut. On to the next spot....
Pull up to the top of the power lines that I had seen birds in before. Get out of the truck and let out a few yelps. BANG. 60 yards away down in the ravine a lone long beard fires off. I loaded u, grabbed the full strutter, and began belly crawling. He finally saw the decoy and it looked like he was very interested. Immediately into full strut, spitting, and coming closer. For whatever reason he got to about 40 yards, spooked, and took off. No shot.
Bounced around a few more spots this morning with no luck. On the way home I drove past a field and saw a lone strutter in the field. The farmer was outside so I pulled in and asked if he would mind if I tried to kill him. He laughed and said go for it. It was perfect because there was a nice hedge row dividing two fields. I crawled about 200 yards across the other field and got to the hedge row in line where I had last seen him. Peeked over and there he was. 40 yards and not spooked at all. Slowly picked the gun up, aim, andddd miss!!! Fun morning but also disappointing.
Might just have to give it one more go up here...
Exciting morning Moons! And thanks for the update, I think it had been 30 minutes since I last checked in here trying to vicariously live through anyone who might be out there.
Moons, that's exciting for sure. I've had it so pounded into me not to 'stalk' a turkey I've not tried it. when you describe it, man, have to admit it sounds fun.
HFSC... I spend probably 8-12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, typing, reading, researching, crunching data etc... I hop on Bowsite as a little brain break OR as a commute so to speak. I work from home, so sometimes I need a little "transition time" since I'm not driving to work. it's not as good a break as a REAL walk outside or what not, but as a little change of pace between areas of focus or tasks... all good. Plus, i've grown to type so dang fast that sometimes I think I can type faster than I can talk :). Except for on my phone - I STINK at phone typing.
Today I had work stuff all AM through lunch. Then zipped out for an hour fifteen buzzing around Leominster State Forest on the MTB, now I'm doing a quick "brain commute" back to computer land... Next stop, playing with data...
Last year, I watched my buddy crawl 60 yards in the woods to get to the edge of a field where toms were strutting. He got right to a big rock on the edge of the field and nailed a nice tom at 15 yards. This was on private land... I would never recommend it on public land.
Stalking is a fun way to hunt, but you're right, could be dangerous. Here is a snapshot of my view this morning. Beautiful country up here.
I've asked before but no answer: Do Turkeys see orange? If they do not then, yu know ... put some on. If you still get shot... shoot back!
