I was considering what broadhead to use to penetrate the armor … then realized I could just pick her up.
I gently flipped her over, then when I flipped her back she offered to bite me !!

They all do offer that. I used to trap 200-300 a year.

I bet they are tough to kill with an arrow.

Years ago there was a bow fishing contest every year at Chippewa Valley Sporting Goods in Eau Claire when they sold bows. It was the largest carp and the largest turtle. There were some very large Carp brought in and some very large turtles every year.

They are an odd critter. They can be dead & they don't know it. I have only shot one while bowfishing. You can punch through the shell easier than you would think. I used to trap them also. Back in the day when I was set up I could clean one every 10 minutes. Then the state got picky about having to have stainless sinks & tables & be inspected to butcher & sell the meat. Then I had a buyer in Oshkosh that bought them live. Plus he bought painted turtles for a buck a peace. Could get a few hundred of those pretty quick. Then they put a short season on them that wouldn't line up with the main part of bowfishing. Plus a slot size limit & very small possession limit. Nothing like trying to measure a pissed off snapper. Plus they made the cage traps illegal which were much more efficient than the hoop nets. I only kept 2 of the hoop nets in case I get a wild hair but Tweed if you want a cage trap I got about a Dozen. Just can't use them. If people knew how many 40 + pound turtles are living even in a small Trout stream they would never wade again.

Almost forgot, I still have my Turtle hook that I used before trapping. That is a lost art & was a lot of fun. No wonder I got a bad back.

I had a trap line one year, and one stream I set with a 160 that fit perfect in a pinch point to kind of give it a test and see. Well, after 7 days of checking, I had 7 (or the same one each day) box turtles. No fur. I would pull them out let them go upstream and downstream of the trap. I had to laugh every day when I checked.

I did catch a couple Snappers in 330's in the Spring while trapping Beaver damage. They were in shallow channels & the Snappers were not happy. The tongs were not long enough & when you did get a spring compressed you had to try to get the hook on it to hold it closed. A wrestling match that seemed fun at the time but I wouldn't want to do it now. Have to love it though.

Is it legal to shoot a turtle while bowfishing? Was out a couple nights ago and we saw 5 different snappers.
