I went scouting Monday and there is no water in any water holes. I found two small springs in the valley I was scouting near Benson Ridge. Anyone know of any deep water? Also will the water holes fill up during monson season or are we in for a really dry year?

I haven't been to 34 since March but 36 is currently under strict fire restrictions. No campfires allowed. They will probably fill IF we get monsoons.

Will elk use the trick tanks if monson season is bad.

No one is likely to tell about springs that are not on a map, so you'll need to cover ground to find them. Elk use the trick tanks year around, and they are visible on google earth. Some of them are dry, as well, now. I like to use www.hillmap.com which displays topo and google earth side by side. Zoom in on google earth and look for either trick tanks, or what looks like a band of lush grass in a meadow, which could be a spring. Then look over at the topo to figure out just where it is. I would bet big money we will get monsoons and most earth tanks will be full to the brim by August. Might not be a good year for fat elk and big racks.

Muddyboots thinks for the info. I'm using onxmaps and google side by side noe and did manage to find two springs not listed on either maps. This is my first elk hunt and maybe last for a while. I'm active duty stationed in New Mexico but leave for D.C. right later this year. I would gladly take any Bull or Cow.

34 doesn't have special sites you just pick a spot and shot the big thing with antlers. There everywhere right.

These guys would be nice to see September first. They were in between Cloudcroft and Mayhill around Thanksgiving last year.

Lol. I've actually only hunted it once for me. But called for friends on several hunts. I lived in Roswell for over 20 years and spent a fair amount of time in 34, 36 and 37. All 3 have what I look for in an elk hunt in different ways. 34 has good numbers and one can expect encounters daily. Elk are very callable whether they are talking or not ;) just a matter of the right call, and the right bull ;)

I’ve hunted 34 several times and know where a natural spring that never dries up is. in a fairly remote area ( even for 34). Always holds rutting bulls. Can’t quite recall the name of it right now...

Ah yes, that killer spring just below Notellum Ridge...
