If you don't like the topic, just look away lol. Here's a few pictures I've had on camera lately. Share your pictures throughout the off-season and through the season. I'm sure most of us are looking forward to the archery season, and the camera captures Amp you up. My neighbors are starting to think alike, and we are not being as secretive, so we share pictures amongst ourselves. Our goal is allowing deer to grow. It would be great to see their potential at 5 years of age, but it takes a co-op of like-minded neighbors to achieve that. Personally, no hard feelings when someone else doesn't want to hold out, but it does help to be forthright and honest with one another. I'm lucky to have a really good connection with the neighbors, and three of them I call friends. I won't share their photos, but they have some dandies as well.

Hey bud...really nice bucks. I'm envious, I don't even have my cameras out yet. Gotta get off my rear and get my gear in the woods. Sounds as if you've a really nice arrangement with your neighbors, what with you all working together and sharing experiences & pics. Good on you, not a lot of fellows can pull that off! It takes a special sort and I know you are that sort. Well done. The best of luck to you Pete during this upcoming bow season.

From: Pete-pec
05-Aug-23
Thanks Bill. Of course I'm adding that new element which is shooting the longbow, but that might allow those deer to get even older lol, as that method certainly limits your effective range. That "arrangement" you speak of is not shared by everyone of course, but I do wonder, as the deer grow older, and sightings of more mature deer grow, does that change the mind of some of those "on the fence", (or on the other side of the fence)? I sure love venison, but there's a lot more enjoyment pulling the bow back and letting down on those "up and comers", than it is ending their short lives. Again, not for everyone, but how many of us truly share the exact same ideology on anything in life?

Yeah Jim, this is truly a result of five bow hunting neighbors thinking similarly. I wish I could share some of the other pics I've received from them. I was sent a very tall-tined 14 pointer today that is perhaps less than a mile from me. We often get the same pictures of the same deer, so this deer and many others are part of the landscape. Makes passing those 3 year olds a bit easier lol.

Ridge Runner, hit me up, and I'll set up your camera so it's the most useful and drawing the least amount of battery. I'll have you mirror my setup, and I think you'll be ahead of the curve. I hope retirement is going good.

From: casekiska
20-Aug-23
Hey Ridge - strongly suggest listening to Pete about the Tactacam camera set-up. Last year I consulted with him a number of times about the ones I purchased and everything worked out fine. I find too the Tactacam techs are "customer friendly" and always willing to help. Back in the nineties I used to run quite a few cameras but by Y2K I got completely away from them. Last year, pretty much at Pete's urging, I got into them again and really enjoyed having them out. The most important thing they did was to let me know about the quality of animals on my property. This resulted in my passing, while I waited for "Mr. Big", on at least three different bucks I otherwise probably would have taken. Anyways, I'm thinking Pete will steer you in the right direction and you'll like that road,...I know I did.

From: Ridge Runner

Yup I’m touching base with Pete and and is helping me out a lot Also had some trouble activating the camera on Friday night so I got in touch with Tactacam technical support Sat morning and the gentleman that helped me was super helpful and spent about 15-20 minutes on the phone with me I had to take a pic of QR code and send to him and he manually activated it and then did some test pics with me while I was on the phone with him , Was very good customer service

Thanks for the feedback Bill. I feel I should share 1 change I made to the settings. Here is a screenshot of the change in "Settings Check". Go to daily, and you'll save battery life for sure! The "instant" "settings check" mode seems to wear the batteries much quicker. I suppose your camera is constantly signaling? Anyway, make that change on your cameras.

From: casekiska

My cameras also have been unusually quiet for the last bit of time...maybe two weeks or so. Haven't seen as many does and fawns or a good buck lately. Hope it picks up. Omen for the season?????

From: Pete-pec
08-Sep-23
No Bill. I think it's two things? Dispersal, and testosterone. Hard horned deer seem to like to be alone. I've seen this every year at this time. Only thing that I see detrimental, is all the deer that were hanging out at "your place" find a new place to hang out. I'll lose 75% to another woodlot, and hope to see them again when they are out cruising for does during the rut. That is when anything can happen, including deer you never laid eyes upon.

From: casekiska
08-Sep-23
Yes Pete,...I agree. Dispersal, they have taken their movements to some other area. And their level of testosterone is increasing, as I believe you were alluding to. The prominent and easily visible sign of that is their shedding of velvet. Good sign for fellows looking to see perhaps the very first sign of the coming rut. Also, as recently as two weeks ago I saw bachelor groups beginning to form,...composed of mostly two 'n a half year olds and younger. These were the guys I was getting (mostly) on camera, not happening now, at least from what I can see. What we are discussing could fill volumes and I don't know that these short paragraphs we write will ever completely express our opinions and experiences, and resulting knowledge, of what really happens. I think too there is a variability of deer behavior due to the particular influences levied by humans in each individual area,...heck, I've seen deer behavior vary from farm to farm let alone by county or general geographic area! You did mention "dispersal" and "cruising". IMO they are deer behavior characteristics every hunter should be aware of and both are very important and unique to each different area. I feel a knowledge of them for the area hunted is critically important. Personally, I welcome each. Glad to see them as I know they bring in bucks we've never seen before and oftentimes at completely unexpected times. I do know positively that the two best bucks taken off my property were transients and not locals. We'd never seen them before. They were out cruising and, I believe, at the edge of their range. Maybe that's why they made the mistakes they did. Incidentally, both were taken on Halloween morning (2003 & 2007) by bow & arrow.

From: Pete-pec
08-Sep-23
Great summary Bill. Especially those transient deer not so familiar with the area they are unfamiliar with. Yes, they will be on guard, but they aren't necessarily prepared for those lucky hunters in the right place at the right time. My best deer describes that exactly! I was lucky, and that buck was not.

From: Trickle rut
09-Sep-23
Each and every Buck is a individual. What one does others do not. Some travel great distances some not. Some will claim a doe or two and are happy with that. Others chase every deer they can. The older the wiser. The younger the dumber. Like Pete says luck and being in the right spot at that time.

From: casekiska

Shortly after 9-1 the buck activity on my cameras seemed to diminish greatly. However, it now seems as if appearances are beginning to increase again. Doe & fawn sightings also seem to be returning to normal.

From: Pete-pec
16-Sep-23
I'm with Bill. Dead! Mine have not returned since mid August. Happens every year for me. The boys become men, and dispersal is what I feel causes it. Now when I hunt the first couple weeks, hunting the field edges with the wind in my face sort of observing, I'll see those same bucks in the evenings out sparring? They seem to still tolerate one another, but they look like they are gathering here, but sleeping in their own beds. Tonight I'll be in an observation stand testing that theory, and will likely be wrong lol.

Found it kind of cool that this first buck with the flyer was caught on camera exactly 1 minute and 12 hours apart. The 8 pointer is a buck I'm really hoping to get a crack at. He's a 4 year old that I had in range twice last year. I've hunted only once this year, because of the east wind that's no good for entering the woods, but I'm looking forward to the right wind, and heading in about a quarter mile from this camera. These are all legal light, but the woods is dense in this area, so it takes a night photo at those low-light hours.

Thanks Bill. No real hurry yet. The cheapest way to shoot a good buck, is not hunting it when the conditions are bad. I'm off for 35 straight starting October 23rd. If I get one opportunity at a good one, I'm thrilled. If I don't? I'm also thrilled just be lucky enough to be in the woods. Best of luck to you as well!

Bill, I will reply to you. Please don't feel the need to defend me. I cherish our friendship, and appreciate you, and I know you likely worry that I might judge you if you don't have my back. I know you have my back, and I have yours, but anything this pathetic person can get in the form of attention (especially my reply right now because I'm obviously his greatest score), will make him feel valid. He has literally created 30 aliases since I became a regular on this forum. He has discussions with himself now under his current five handles in order to feel relevant. Don't you feel just a little bit sad for him? I don't have any hatred for him at all. I literally feel like I know his horrible back-story to some level, and I pity him like I would with anyone suffering from an illness... including a mental illness like he obviously has. I just wish people here would just figure it out quicker, that some people are just broken, and while "normal" people enjoy two-way discussions to learn, listen, and contribute positively, there are people like this, who are just seeking the attention they didn't get from their parents. He creates multiple user names because most of us have learned that he is truly some deranged sociopath, and they avoid him, but the temptation to answer a question he asks, or take the bait he throws out there, outweighs their common sense to not reply. Can you imagine how sad it must be, to log in and log out each and every time, because you don't know which personality you'll be when you return next? To have a list of names, and email addresses to just have some sort of interaction? Can you see in his words about my mother, that it is a cry out for his own mother who likely he blames for his brokenness? I'm not suggesting she was a prostitute like he wants to portray my mother as, but there must be a parallel to his own? Perhaps abandonment? Perhaps fetal alcohol syndrome? Perhaps she didn't know love either, and that was something she didn't know how to do? The most ironic thing about this, is my mother held two Master's Degrees in both psychology and sociology. She taught me something about wounded people, and it went something like this: A broken arm or a laceration is something we see visually, but a broken mind is something we can't. Those with broken minds are probably more damaged, because there are no stitches or casts that can fix them. You cannot with a "normal" mind understand their dilemma. You can only offer support if they seek help, or you avoid them incessantly if they don't. Now I imagine this person is a male in his late fifties or sixties. If he hasn't been fixed yet, you must pity him, yet avoid him. I choose to avoid him, and you bet your ass it's damn hard to do so, but having an argument with an idiot is futile. They only bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience! Personally? I'd have normally left this forum due to lack of moderating, but I have met like-minded friends here, that I talk with in person, over the phone, or through text and private messaging. I'm not letting one broken man take that from me, nor should anyone else.

Agree. Those split G2's are a common trait amongst the gene pool here. Of course they typically need to see the age of 4 before they're as pronounced, but the genetics are certainly here. I believe this deer resides in a cul de sac nearby. It's a suburban environment in this area.

Darin, if you didn't think some luck was involved, you're too damn proud too be a deer hunter. Yes, we have all the gadgets to try and get one, but let's be honest, those eyes, ears, and noses of a mature whitetail are far superior to anything we as humans can fully comprehend, and while they may seem defenseless against our superior tools and minds, they were never intended to be easy. I'm guilty of trying to make it easier, but those mature deer likely laugh at my efforts. Nice family event with the girls! That's way better than an old seven pointer I promise!

From: BigEight
18-Oct-23
xtroutx, go get him!

Pete, we always have a blast when we sit. They are getting to be pretty good in the woods. They like shooting bows with me but not sure they will ever take an animal on their own. I really have no goals for them in the woods or as hunters. Maybe that's the wrong approach but for now I just like that we have some common interest and enjoy spending the time together. Maybe those two are just the luck I need in the stand!!!

From: Pete-pec
18-Oct-23
I think the idea of no goals offers the least heartbreak. It's a different era. Kids have so many more choices to make, that it can be hard to convince them that this hobby should be theirs. Often times, I see parents try and instill their ideas and their thoughts on their children, only to discourage them, and perhaps create resentment. Truth is, we as dads are providers first, mentors second, and coaches third. Once we allow our kids the freedoms to choose, we should create happier, more independent adults. While I might have wished I hunted with my dad or 3 brothers, it was not them who lit that fire in me. It was my brother in law instead. I'm sure happy he didn't mind taking me along. Learned a great deal from him. He and my sister (and family) live in another state now, but they are always my favorites for that reason. They were not pushy, expectations were never of their own thought process, but instead to coach AFTER I decided I was all in! Good luck this year. You're already successful in more ways than one.

All we do is take pictures of deer. (And other critters) but the focus is deer. So they can be inventoried and named I guess. So we are getting half the story. If we could attach a small video camera in the deer itself now you have the whole story. All we get from trail cams is the deer walked by. It scrapped and licked a branch. Tells us nothing other than they exist and walk around and eat. We don't know what we think we know. Just a thought no answers from trail cams like why or how just who and when. I bet if that was done we would be super surprised about what we don't know but think we do

From: Pete-pec
23-Feb-24
Inventory is my only purpose. It's no different than hunting a woodlot without knowing what might be there. The only difference is this. You can use your imagination hoping a deer comes by, or you can use your imagination and hope a particular deer comes by. I do believe most people understand there is no real advantage using them, even though some will argue otherwise. My cameras likely save more lives than they would without, knowing that there is something caught on camera (often nocturnal) that is better or more mature than the deer currently in front of you offering a perfect opportunity. I passed more deer than I can count. You still have to hunt, and that is where the difference truly lies.

From: Live2Hunt
23-Feb-24
I could care less, I don't like the fact, as baiting, it kind of claims spots on public land, but at least I know where that person is. One other thing cell cams have created is more Lazy hunters from what I have been hearing. As new tech and non bowhunting equipment caves to lazy hunting methods, I hear of people not even going into the woods till there cell came sends a pic of a "target" buck or "there" buck. Sad

Pete - your post above exactly matches my sentiments and the way I use my cameras. For me, they have told me which bucks not to shoot on my property,...they tell me to pass on this one because a better target is in the area. I've said this on this forum before, in my case the cameras save lives.
