Or does it? Had a new strings and cables put on and took the time to get my arrow weight and bow speed. Seemed a little slower than I thought and I knew my arrow weight was low but it works for me. Would be interested in hearing what others shoot. Draw weight 65# Length 29 Arrow weight- 415 Speed 267

I'm not sure of my arrow speed, not very fast I would assume. 60# draw, 28.5" arrow, a smidge over 500 grains. I actually took my arrow weight down by over 80 grains before last season began to get a more forgiving trajectory.

Notime, check your specs on your bow. A lot of times when a shop puts on new cables and strings, they don’t bring it to spec. Nor do they check cam timing properly. My guess is that your ATA is longer than it should be and your cables need to be twisted to get your draw weight where it needs to be pre-changing your strings. That’s a light arrow and semi-slow speed.

Hope that helps. And I’m shooting 75lbs @30” draw @285fps. 570grain arrow :)

It’s about shot placement and not so much speed

22-Feb-24
67 lb draw, 551 grain arrow. 267 fps. I really do wish it was faster as my drop between 20 and 30 and then 30 and 40 is quite a bit but they will blow through anything. You just have to nail the yardage within 5 yards, which is fine in most New England settings but it’s bitten me twice out west where I had to shoot about 50 yards and not know the exact yardage. My next arrow set up I think I’ll do around 500 grains to pick up a little more speed and less drop.

That being said I don’t shoot pins any longer and switched to the EZ-V sight where shot placement is a little loose.

So Notime, with that being said, if you make a shot that hits bone, or the animal spins and you need additional penetration, your arrow is on the light side. What kind of arrow and broadhead are you shooting? Something isn’t adding up with your original specs, unless you have an older bow perhaps?

Shooting RX7 Ultra at 84lbs 85% 30” 536 grain arrow at 294fps. Have an Alpha X 33 at 85lbs 80% 447 grain arrow at 325fps. Second set up is more for TAC and 3D then antelope if I draw that tag. Will go heavier to about 550 grains if I decide to use that bow for elk and deer.

Rooster is right about shot placement. I'd just add that correct stand placement often results in a 20yd broadside shot which ,in turn, simplifies thoughts about your bow set up.

I don't worry about speed. I shoot a Hoyt Rx5 Ultra. 30" draw at 70lb. Shooting Easton FMJ arrows... not sure exact arrow weight, but I would assume 475 grain or so with BH. I use Sevr 2" Titanium 100gr. now... Fast enough... hits hard... no complaints. I used to worry about speed... fast bow, light arrows, etc. Now I just want to be comfortable and have a forgiving setup that hits hard. My next bow I may go down to 65 or, dare I say it, even 60lb! lol

Changed limbs a few years ago from 70 to 60 easier on the body. Bow shoots fast enough.

I think whatever chrono you shot through might be off…..or when you had your strings changed, did you re-check the draw weight? I’ve had people tell me they are pulling 65lbs and when we check it, they’re closer to 58-59lbs. With that light of an arrow out of that bow at your specs, you could be closer to 280fps. Where I’m going with this is, you can shoot a heavier arrow fast, with more energy to fly better. Especially with an expandable you say you use. It takes a lot of energy to open those up and keep pushing through an animal.

Speed isn’t a really big deal unless you’re shooting 300fps or more….it’s much harder to tune broadheads as you go faster. But you also don’t want a slow light arrow either.

Used to shoot light and fast for the first two seasons, then I did the math. Now I'm at ~460 grains at ~270FPS, maybe a little slower. My shots are within 30 yds, so whatever. I want to make as large as a hole as possible and a passthrough is wasted energy that's better spent making a larger hole.

Heavy arrows win.

70#, 29.5", 319-320 chrono speed @ 410grns.

It hums... But it lets me have great results with the "flappers" I like to use for broad heads.
