We’ve had better rain this winter than the last 3, but we’re still in a very serious situation. Will we soon hit 700 days without a 2” rain? I hope not!

Looking better than this time last year. Hopefully the seasonal temps and a couple big systems materialize next week.

They keep moving the rain down the line, it has seemed like it was 6-8 days out for several weeks now. Will the reoccurring periods of drought that began June of ‘21 be broken this year? Or will we remain in a place of desperation? Ponds remain alarmingly low or dry in Montgomery and Chautauqua counties. Wheat looks great though, so we do have that going for us. My father-in-law has begun to simply plan for drought. He drilled 110 acres of wheat last fall to help provide some hay insurance this year. The plan is working well so far.

Hoping desperately to get some decent rain the end of this week!

Me too! We're in NE Kansas and things are really getting dry already. The rains we had this winter hit on frozen ground and ran off. The weather man keeps dangling the carrot out there but, we never seem to get the rain. The hay pastures are already looking bleak.

Ended up with a little over an inch at the house and a half inch at the farm, before it cleared off. We’ll take it, but hopefully it’s not done yet.

We need to send some to NW Texas.

Just had a little excitement. Thought I was going to see my first Kansas tornado…

From: Kansan
07-Mar-24
I watched and filmed the whole thing from the Caney racetrack. Reed Timmer, and every other storm chaser in the country was in town. I counted over 2 dozen different chase vehicles.

A tornado just came very close to planting itself right on top of Caney. We are very blessed that it did not.

That was a very impressive fireworks display that God put on for free. Not sure how much we got out of it (3-4"??) but there wasn't much soil showing above the water when the lightning flashes illuminated it. Almost all gone now but we got full ponds and a flowing and flushed out creek out of the deal. No crops in the dirt to benefit but it sure was nice to see all that mud, I'm sure the trees are slurping it up.

Beginning to have the dust bowl effect around here already. Driving across the pasture produces a depressingly large amount of dust. Today makes 653 days since our last 2” rain at our property. It has happened nearby. My brother-in-law’s house got 2.3” on March 7th and they’re 4.5 miles from our place. We got .9” out of the same cloudburst.

Praying we get some moisture today. 5 days ago they were saying we were gonna get big storms and rain, they killed those chances again though.

Longterm forecast looking extremely bleak. We got nothing out of the last two days of rain chances. Sunday it went west of us, yesterday it went east. ‘24 is beginning to look like more of the same. :-/

Yeah, Caney got some hail, while I was at the gym in fact! Good rain here at the house, I’m guessing a little over two inches, haven’t looked at the gauge since it got dark. Not the same rain over on our property, the neighbor said we were setting at .90” a little over an hour ago. So hoping for 1.5” there at least. We’ll take it gratefully, and hoping for more this spring.

Per the dents in that roof…looks like you got atleast golf ball sized. No fun when it gets that big. Hope no one was hurt!

Thanks crested, quite a bit of damage in caney, but no injuries or wrecks that I heard of. And………..the streak is broken at 660+ days, 2.15” at our property!!! Still need more, but VERY thankful for some real run-off.

Friday looks really interesting. Dryline draped from Manhattan to east of Wichita with mid 60s dewpoints pushed up against it. Alot can change in the coming days.

The forecasted rain totals have gone up since I posted that screenshot yesterday. It’s not looking good as far as severe storms are concerned unfortunately.

I spent three days in Ness county earlier this week. The wheat crop there is in very dire need of rain. And I planted about 50 cedar trees seven years ago, for wildlife shelter. They grew from being planted at one foot tall to 6+ feet tall. Half of them died in the past several months. It’s damn dry there.

28-Apr-24
Yep getting dry again out here. Wheat looks good, but needs some rain. We has some snow and rain Jan.-March that got the wheat going but nothing for quite some time now. I planted cedars in 2020 that were 6-8 inches and are now 7 foot. I did water them. I have a shipment of cedars that should be here this week.

Here in Miami county where it has been so dry we got 2" Thursday evening and 5 1/2" last night, sure helped the ponds but, it came about right to soak in for pastures and crops.

From: Kansan

I planted about 300 cedars along our road in 2020. About half of them have died from drought, and the ones that remain have grown about 6 inches in 3-4 years lol. Not able to water these, though. I have a bunch of oak trees that get all of the TLC.

Got this pic of the boat ramp at QSR this morning. Couldn't even use it last Spring, water was 4-5' below the bottom of the ramp...10' underwater now...crazy.

28-Apr-24
Cedar Bluff is down over 20 feet. The water is a 200 plus yards away from the boat ramps I used 20 years ago.
