(Copied from another post, this is not my dog) This happened March 5th Ashland WI: As much as it saddens me to make this post it needs to be done. This morning around 2 am my mother in law got up to use the bathroom. She let their Labrador Retriever outside to do her business als well. Within minutes my father in law heard the dog bark in the backyard. My mother in law went to the door to let the dog back in. There was no answer from the dog and she was nowhere to be seen. They immediately called their son in law that lives down the road. He arrived 10 minutes later on his Polaris ranger. What he found was horrific. The lab was lying dead and steaming in the field 100 feet from their house. The dog was split wide open and the wolves had started eating her. I know there will be questions on whether it was truly wolves. I can say with 100% certainty it was. We took the dog to Ashland and met with Ethan Rossing a wolf specialist with the USDA. He completed an examination confirming this. This experience should be seen as an eye opener for anyone with pets. This didn’t happen in the middle of the national forest. This happened in their backyard. These wolves knew what they were doing and they made quick work of the family dog. Please take the time to call your state and federal legislators and demand some management of these killing machines. Thank you to Ethan Rossing from the USDA and Game Warden Phillip Brown for you professionalism during this tragic incident.

Sorry to hear about your dog. Unfortunate that unless this happens in Madison, Racine, or Milwaukee nothing will change. On another note you have a good warden there in Phil Brown. I coached when he was in school and against his father, their head coach. Good People.

Its only a matter of time before someone gets killed. My son is a forester and now carries. To much harassment while working. I hunt Ashland Co. and have had them follow me many times. Not a good feeling.

Wolves in yards are common place. Even in the parkfalls school yard. Photo is my home deck.

Being a lab lover (this lab looked like mine) This makes me sick to my stomach when I see pictures like this. I just read where a Burmese mountain hound was killed by wolves 50' from the their home in Minnesota. If I lived up north again I'd have a Turkish Kangal, Wolf killing machines.

The sad thing is, the wolfies and the anti hunting groups (one in the same) will say you do not belong living in those areas. It is just infuriating on there thought process is concerning this type of thing, pet or human, they do not care. They care of one thing, do as they think and that is humans do not kill animals nor belong in there environment. And, the media/Hollywood pushes it for them.

As a dog lover, that's hard to look at. It's my greatest worry where I live. We don't have wolves, but coyotes are thick, they are close, they are brazen, and our dogs have a doggy door giving them easy access at all hours of the night to go outside.

It's so sad we have to even discus about the worry taking a dog outside.

My wife and I have a lahso apso mix dog. Living in the " city" we see urban sprawl taking remaining woods and farm fields away. I've had deer in my driveway, fox and coyotes roaming the streets for a rabbit or cat. My wife started out from the house with dog on leash (law) and the neighbor started to yell from behind her. When she turned to see commotion, there were two coyote on the sidewalk withing 20 yards of them ready to grab our dog. Had the neighbor not started yelling my wife would have been part of something real ugly. That picture above hurts to look at and although I live way down southern WI, I will do anything in my power to get the preds controled. What do we need to do????? Send that picture every day to Madison people!!!!

I’ve had wolf tracks in my driveway in the snow. We have a yellow lab and a very good yard light. I also have a 3.5” 12 ga. Shotgun with extended choke tube for a tighter pattern. (Tested) and #4 buckshot at the ready. Being a hound hunter I’ve seen that picture to many times over the years. I won’t hesitate to pull the trigger if warranted.

My friend in the UP, by me has a dog from Russia. Picked it up via Canada in 2019. Bred for killing wolves. His name is Kato. Older now he is 180 pounds of gentleness, until something ventures into the yard. To date he has killed 8 coyotes, wolves don't come by. Last year he got into it with a young black bear, came back needing some stitches, but still had part of front paw, in his mouth. Thats hanging in the barn. Kato does not have a dog house, he has a small. Ha ha. Loves kids. No sheep have been lost since Kato moved in.

Someone needs to live trap wolves and release them in Madison.

15-Mar-24
I believe the Wi wolf is federally protected by a federal Jude/ court ruling. That being said Madison deserves a few wolf . I would like the federal judge to be held personally responsible for eliminating a states right to manage the wolf.

I've gotten two wolves. One in Canada when I was bear hunting many years ago and one trapping in Wi during wolf season. Only took me less than 24 hours to trap one. I can't wait until I draw another wolf tag, if that'll ever happen.

So in 2021 a supposed violation happened. 99 too many wolf were taken .Than , Just 3 years later there is a record amount wolf , lts like the hunt never happened . It's a miracle, or somebody is counting impaired, or the people deciding have no clue how and what a wolf is .

I heard a short news blurb the other day about special interest groups that have a case against the Federal government, they will no longer be able to shop around for Judges who are sympathetic to their cause. This could have a big impact on such things as abortion rights ,2nd amendment to wolves. Did anyone else hear anything?

I was sitting in a stand in Far northern Saskatchewan ( Grapes favorite spot. ) one Nov morning & 3 Artic Wolves walked by . One looked at me , lifted his tail & sprayed . That monster had to be 8 feet from nose to end of tail . Gave me the Willie's.

Second morning on the stand it was still dark & I heard a pack rip apart a Deer just yards from me . I was sorry I didn't whack one the day before . Guide found the head the next day , a 150 class buck .

If I owned a business or lived / payed property tax in the north woods I would be organizing my own wolf hunt guaranteed.

During the last gun deer season, I saw more wolves than deer. This is near Necedah and I saw 1 doe on opening day and 1 wolf. Nothing on Sunday, but on Monday I saw a small buck and 2 wolves. Tough to keep young folks interested in deer hunting when there aren't as many deer as wolves.

From: Hoot
21-Mar-24
Herbp - Really sad up north. I hunted four years ago right behind where I use to live. From Mid Oct until the Friday before gun season a saw 3 deer total. Gun season and muzzleloader season I hunted every day and nothing except for a doe on opening evening. I used to see a lot of deer, but when the wolves moved in they moved on. If I was a youngster today learning how to deer hunt up north, I'd say screw it.

21-Mar-24
The last 2 post highlight why everyone needs to join the wbh . The current reality is we have no voice or advocate. The DNR is against us and hunting . I REPEAT THE WI DNR IS AGAINST HUNTING .

I read in the Ashland Daily Press today of a very unfortunate accident where a dog was caught in a coniber trap set in the water for beaver, everything was legal as far as the trap, they talk about more safe guards should be put in place etc etc etc. what burns me about this article is that why it was written in the first place, there was a beautiful dog that was just killed by wolves recently, why didn’t they write an article about that and the wolf situation.

I think the DNR should put in there pamphlets or the trappers association should put out how to open a conibear and a foothold if this happens. Conibear is simple no matter the size with a piece of rope (or a leash) and a loop for your boot.

From: MjF
22-Mar-24
Live2Hunt, it’s simple if you’ve done it before, not so simple with a 330 Conibear, besides you would have to get that trap off within 1 minute.

From: Pasquinell
22-Mar-24
Mike would it help or hinder if others sent emails? I don't want to mess it up if you don't feel it to be helpful.

From: Live2Hunt
22-Mar-24
A 330 conibear needs to be set under water, well I believe around half or a 3rd under water. They cannot be land set in WI. If it was a land set, it was illegal and the setter is liable. If it was a legal water set it is an unfortunate incident, but rare also. The wolf/dog killing is frequent every year. At what point do you start hearing about kids getting killed by these things? Do we need to wait till that happens? Us that are not wacko animal rights people know better and would like to control the wolf population. The wacko's just don't care about human life and believe we do not belong in the forest areas. Unless of coarse, they like a certain area!!! LOL.

From: Drop Tine
22-Mar-24
This was investigated by the DNR and the trapper was completely legal. I was in a debate with the owner of the dog about the laws in place for the use of those types of traps. Just as there are leash laws in place for pet owners to control their pets. The trapper was legal and your pet was off leash. Who was negligent? He didn’t want to hear it and clearly has an agenda even though he says he is not anti-trapping. He said he was ignorant but net negligent. I also told him his efforts might be better suited getting an area set up for pets where they can run off leash safely. Again didn’t want to hear it. Just went on about needing more regulations. This couple is from Minnesota and moved from the city to the northwoods and expects everyone to adjust their lives to protect the ignorant. I will admit I don’t know the area and if better judgment could have been made by the trapper on where he was set up. But he was legal.

From: MjF
22-Mar-24
Pasquinell e-mails would help. In my e-mail I mentioned how tragic this was but also pointed out more dogs, cattle get killed by wolves than traps and he should do a story about that.
