Brett Murray / Special to Forum News Service FARGO — Longtime heavy-metal music group Metallica has taken a philanthropic approach during its current tour by donating money through the All Within My Hands Foundation to cities they visit.
The foundation donated $10,000 to Great Plains Food Bank in Fargo Sept. 8, when they had a show in Grand Forks that night.
Jared Slinde, Great Plains Food Bank communications manager, said the donation really made an impact.
"It's really difficult to describe what difference this made. The amount of traffic even with the photo with them," Slinde said. "Now you can notice a buzz with the facility and volunteers. The amount of individuals we've gotten from this, and that should lead to increase and amount of volunteers."
The Great Plains Food Bank first made the announcement Metallica and the All Within My Hands Foundation would be contributing in a news release Aug. 20.
The band also announced they would be holding a drawing for volunteers to win a collection of of the band's 13 studio albums and two drawings for a set of tickets to see the band in concert. "To have their reach and worldwide exposure and take time out and give back the way they have, It's really amazing and I hope they know that," Slinde said. "They didn't have to choose hunger relief and it's great that they did."
Slinde and others got a chance to meet the band backstage before and receive the check with an amount that left him in shock. According to Slinde, the $10,000 is enough to provide 30,000 meals through the food bank.
"They (Metallica) make it clear they aren't above anybody else and they were genuinely interested in what we do," Slinde said.
According to the Great Plains Food bank, it provides food assistance to more than 97,000 individuals across North Dakota. Half of those individuals are children and seniors.
I think Conservatives, Liberals, and everyone else have way more in common than not. Sounds weird since we all like to debate things, and in the social media, 24hr news cycle day and age we are in, we can get all hot with our differences.
But when the poo hits the fan, those things fade instantly and the reality that we are countrymen comes through. I mean, look at Houston last year and the amazing support from all kinds of people there... 9/11, and heck, the next several weeks and months post Florence I bet as well.
Humanity takes over and the lib/con stuff fades when really important issues smack us.
Post Hurricane Harvey I took several loads of water and supplies into Port Arkansas and Rockport Texas
I never considered what political stripe any of the people that may have benefitted from those items were and would not have cared anyway. They were fellow Texans and they needed help.

I met some real Hippies in Vermont and New Hampshire a few years ago while visiting with my Wife's family up that way.
I don't know if those Hippies were Liberal, or Conservative, but I sure wish they would shower a few times a week and use deodorant.
The left discovered that anyone with no moral compass could be useful.
The hippies may also have discovered that libertarian meant they were responsible for themselves and socialism looked like an easier path to get someone else to pay for their life choices.
