The FBI is the most anal retentive organization I know of. And their IT experts are real pros, able to extract data from a hard drive if you hit the disks with a hammer.
Everything on an FBI computer would be backed up somewhere so deleting it would be meaningless. I have a suspicion that senior FBI types would be well aware of that. So, while I'd love to find that the story is true, I have some strong doubts.
