Athletes come in all shapes, sizes and disciplines. For what they do, gymnasts don't get the attention from the sports spectating market that they should, imo. And to watch a live event is actually humbling.

Many years ago I was in Houston on a business trip and went to a place to have dinner. There was actually a trapeze hanging from the ceiling and a girl was doing some neat tricks. The young woman about five feet from me was really enjoying the show. My waitress asked me if I recognized the young woman next to me and I told her she sure looked familiar. It was Mary Lou Retton. She had just won gold medals. She was my hero. She was a cutie pie in person.

From the looks of her body, I doubt she’ll have any spine problems down the road. She’s is in spectacular shape and has a fitness level beyond comprehension. Her thighs are so strong they are absorbing every bit of the shock. Her agility is very impressive.

We used to laugh that they could get so much attention for walking along a 4” padded balance beam just 3 feet off the padded floor, but nobody could care less about us walking a 3.5” wall 8’ drop to one side and 20’+ drop to the other side with a 25# of toolbags hanging off of you and someone screaming it ain’t fast enough. I often asked for applause, but just got the finger wave. But yes, I’ll give it to her. She is an extremely talented woman.

I stumbled into an article, I think from the NYT today on her. I should have clipped the link. She was pressing herself hard for an Olympic spot, had beaten the young woman from the states who's current Olympic Champion as well as world and US champion multiple times over. Burnout, injuries (fx spine, ribs and some other stuff I believe) and just a general "this is no longer fun" feel took over and she stepped away.

The collegiate program she ended up in, the Coach, they really had her focus on getting back to enjoying what she was doing, focusing on the task at hand, the process... And she started to flourish again.

They noted she'd only done this performance 3X other times, and that she legitimately is having a blast doing something she loves again.

Pretty cool.

That's pretty cool. So many new moves now.... I was lost with the terminology the last time I had any dealings with gymnastics,. Was a 4 year varsity letterman in gymnastics during the early 70's. Even made it to state my senior year.... where I finished out of the medals..... top two guys just blew the doors off the rest of us. It's totally...... completely changed now..... back then most were specialists.... now you have to be pretty much all-around and compete in each event. Our men's team practiced with the women's team every day in the woman's gym, traveled to meets together, etc. We helped each other out quite a bit, training, spotting....

That young lady..... all of them near that level actually..... pretty rare air. I did get to party with a bunch of those athletes back in the day though.... some wild stories.... cheerleaders become downright socially boring......=D

That beam.... the unevens...... those girls ALWAYS had bruises all over them. Always. Tough kids for sure. I quit the high bar after shattering a heel in a..... mishap. A relative wienie.... stuck with rings... nothing to collide with between the apparatus and the mat.....
