Not sure if this was discussed here, but the oldest living MOH winner died earlier this month.

"Robert Maxwell, Medal of Honor recipient who fell on grenade to save lives, dies at 98"

Wow! God was with him that he did not instantly perish. No greater love...

No doubt he received a hero's welcome at the Gates.

Angels that were with him then, never left him! I'm sure they escorted him right through the Pearly Gates.

Fantastic Story, what a great American Hero!

Amen to that....

So many have given so much for this great country. God bless all who have served and fought (and their families) to protect all we hold dear. I can't read an article or story about hero's like Mr. Maxwell without getting a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. I pray that the decades after he served were good to him.

canepole, it is reported that he apologized to his commanding officer for not finishing the campaign with him. He had spend several weeks in the hospital from prior wounds before returning to the combat zone.

Henry, I did some reading when I got home last night. Mr Maxwell was something else. A Quaker that grew up in your great state of Kansas. Wow! It's a shame that there were thousands of courageous acts from our service personnel throughout our wars that for a number of reasons weren't fully regonized. I wish everyone a safe Memorial Day Weekend. Gene

canepole, in many ways it was considered the norm when I grew up to have gone to the war and served bravely and honorably.

Nobody made a special big case over veterans because most of the men were. However the "draft dodgers" were looked down upon.

Henry, my Grandad served in WW1 and my father served in WW2. I was 14 when we pulled out of Vietnam. I already had my career line out before I left high school and for that reason I never served. However I have the utmost respect for ANYONE who has served or is a current member of our arm forces. Being from a conservative state like Okla we didn't have the student unrest or the torching of ROTC buildings. Soldiers on leave or returning home weren't called names or spit upon. If someone would have been crazy enough to try to burn an American flag they would litterly been spiting teeth! During the 60's and 70's our state was 70% Democratic! That number is almost the opposite here today but as a whole we're a patriotic bunch.
