Chick Andersen's call at the Belmont says it all about Secretariat as he was announcing the race as he clocks the 3/4 mile pole in 1"09.2. mindbogglingly fast for a race of this overall distance .." Secretariat is moving like a TREMENDOUS machine...but Secretariat is all alone.....he is out there almost a 1/16 of mile ahead of the other horses...Secretariat is in a position that is impossible to catch"........and as he goes under the wire at 2:24 flat for the mile and half..Chick Andersen, shock stricken, claims " ladies and gentlemen that is a world record that will stand forever", 31 lengths. Lo and behold Chick was prophetic because no horse since has come within 15 lengths of that record time. All this without being pushed by another horse under a simple hand ride. Pegasus on earth. Incredible.

My family were sports nuts growing up so I saw every major sporting event that was televised . Before cable there was there was something called closed circuit TV. I saw all of Ali’s fight, tennis match’s. We would get Canadian TV via the antenna and I learned all about curling as a teen if their was a ping pong match on my dad would watch it before anything else on tv except a western or a Tarzan movie. The Olympics were like a holy holiday at our house. So we watched the entire Triple crown the year Secretariat won it. The entire extended family would sit around my fathers large console TV. I remember the hair standing up on the back of my neck as everyone was standing and screaming for big red to run faster. Yes the greatest athlete ever imho.
Hawk archer gable was a full blown wrestling animal and I can understand your thinking.

John Hall the NYT expert Thoroughbred writer wrote in 1972 when Secretariat won the Horse of the Year Honors as the first two year old ever to win that award claimed "““One notable not-so-grand is obvious, though. Out of nine awards being presented, there isn’t a Kelso or an Exterminator or a Native Diver or an Armed in the house.” The following year 1973 when Secretariat as a 3 year old after winning the Triple Crown, Horse of the Year and Turf Champion and setting records in all these races that stand today said " I didn't know what the hell I was talking about then. Somebody must have slipped me a mickey. I am speechless of such a magnificent animal and genuflect in disgrace in the presence of Secretariat the Great. The one, the only and the only one never to be seen again."

Greatest horse ever for darn sure. Serious question for your equine aficionados, did the same jockey ride Secretariat every year?

No.

Not his entire two year old run....Ron Turcotte took over and immediately got beat. They smoothed things out and Turcotte was Secretariat's jock the rest of the way. Turcotte would be suspended for 5 days and Eddie Maple took over in the irons in The Canadian International, Secretariat's last race and first venture on the grass, where he opened on the great and I do mean great Turf Champion Tentam by 12 lengths halfway down the stretch but Maple pulled him up and won going easy by 6. It could have been 20. Any jockey could have ridden that animal to victory.

Shiffrin will blow Stenmarks records to dust if she stays healthy. As far as Secretariat, I don't think they will ever be broken.
