Figured I'd do a FYI post that might help someone else who has a Springfield 1903 and is curious about it's history or enjoys Springfield 1903 history. I'm currently researching an old Springfield 1903 Mark I that I believe was my great uncle's. He was a Wagoneer in WWI so I don't think he carried a weapon. Plus what I found so far suggests it was manufactured too late to see use in WWI. He must have acquired it post-WWI. Alot of good info at these links. Have fun if ya got one.....

Alot of pics and explanations at these links.

Wow....fancy collection! If that is a SA strap, can you make out the date? Mine shows 19?? but I can't make out the last two digits. My Springfield Mark 1 is a 1918 with a 5-18 barrel date. It has been to re-work. There is an faint ink stamp on the stock that shows 1909. The trigger is also not a Mark 1 but everything else is.

I read a couple of other fellas who got Springfield's from CMP. One was a Mark 1 but didn't have the small ejection port on the left side. The guy (John Beard) who is the resident expert said it was one of a few SA's that was missed by the production staff....it was stamped but never ported. Another guy got one of those USMC sniper/competition SA's that had been passed around before it went to CMP. Alot of history with those SA rifles.

What is the deal with the one in the above pic? Is that a factory scope?
