The Farmer Who Cut Off His Own Leg With A Pocket Knife

When I was a kid a farmer got his hand caught in a corn picker. He couldn't get his hand out and knew no one would look for him until after dark. He was bleeding and figured he would be dead before he was found. He took out his pocket knife and cut off his arm at the elbow. I asked him how bad it hurt. He said it didn't hurt that much. He told me to always have a sharp knife with you. He had butchered enough hogs to know how to get through the joint of his elbow without having to cut any bone. His brother was a doctor and my neighbor. The doctor used to take me to the farm to hunt geese. The farmer's son could call geese with his voice. We would throw back the cover and shoot. The son used a 410 shotgun and 7 1/2 shot. He head shot the geese and said it was like shooting doves. He always got his limit. BTW I always carry at least one very sharp knife and often two. Also, the geese we were shooting were tolling, no log distance shots.
