Is the leatherwall site down or is there a problem on my end?
Getting an error when I tried to get in this morning. Must be down.
It's the site. Not working for me either this morning.
Same here, thought it was me but glad it's not lol.
Maybe the mods got tired of locking threads and just decided to lock the whole thing?
Sometimes it doesn't take much for threads to be locked over there.
I've had posts pulled and one mod threatened to ban me simply for criticizing the attitudes of some arrogant posters on the LW (who happened to be his buddies, I suspect). I named no one specifically, just wrote in general terms, which were very true. At least one of the mods is very thin-skinned.
If the "Big Game Forum" alarm rings over on the LW and he reads this post, he'll likely pull it too.
They are trying to upgrade the Leatherwall from the 60's that it has been stuck in for many decades.....its a difficult process
I agree Jaquomo, I still check in there daily but I spend more time over here lately.
I've had a few pulled also. Also heard you can get banned on Tradgang for things you say on the wall.
Beendare, it's not the 60's they're stuck in, it's the 70's. Oh wait, that's the average age.
I make it this year.
It's a form of cronyism over on the wall and it is certainly distasteful to say the least but, I still like quite a few over there and just live with the rest.
The wall has its characters. Something this side isn't exactly immune to...
"t's a form of cronyism over on the wall and it is certainly distasteful to say the least but, I still like quite a few over there and just live with the rest."
I agree. I always start out there and then end up at the community forum. Hardly ever post on the LW anymore though, don't even linger long.
Used to post over there on the Campfire threads we had for fun until some sanctimonious snobs got those threads banned. And yeah, I meant what I called them. ;)
One thing they don't do on Leatherwall is bitch and moan about the people on the Big Game forum. They pretty much keep that among themselves.
I like visiting the Leatherwall as I shoot a recurve but mostly a compound bow. Most there are dedicated more than I am but I have always appreciated their passion for the stick and string. It was interesting to find out that there are some that do not hunt but enjoy shooting their bow just the same. As a member of the CBA and the Colorado Traditional Bow Hunters Society, I support all forms of hand held, hand drawn bows and the people that launch their arrows sky ward.
my best, Paul
LOL at LKH's comment! I was born in 62 and don't consider myself to be stuck in any decade. I spend more time over there, as I shoot trad 90% of the time.
Well stated Paul. I enjoy perusing the threads there as well. Lots to learn on both forums. C
I got bored with trad hunting and shooting and bought a compound. Having a blast with that now! That didn't make some trad guys very happy...
Yea, allot of grandpa's over there. My grandpa was very smart.
Yea, allot of grandpa's over there. My grandpa was very smart.
You're mistaken bigdog21 the wheelie side IS the "Darkside."
Me too Lou. Went from stickbows to compounds, back to stickbows again, and now to compounds bows again. I don't ever remember being this excited about bowhunting as I am now. Always kept the freezer full regardless of the bow but, I just got bored with the stickbows. Plus, I hurt my shoulder and was having a hard time shooting the them. I'm pumped and, counting the days before the season's start with this compound. Really having fun with it again.
I rarely post on the LW anymore. For various reasons. God Bless men
I was never one who fell victim to the need to segregate. I go to whatever forum strikes me and...how did I recently see it said?....eat the meat and spit out the bones.
The reason the LW doesn't throw shade towards Bowsite is because Gladiators rarely concern themselves with the opinions of peasants.
I think some 'shade' was just thrown...
I'm sorry but I can't hear you over the sound of your mediocrity. Go shoot your training wheels and be sad.
Passive aggressive memes are so edgy. Your husband must be so proud.
Dear God,
please let this thread get over 200 posts.
I ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Amen
LOL! I think it's more like the hamster pulled a tendon.
Oops, the dreaded Big Game Forum alarm must have gone off over on the LW! That seems to happen whenever "trad" is mentioned here on the hunting forums.
I love it when guys who don't hunt dis guys who do! Most of my trad buddies might as well carry a five iron around in the woods instead of their bows so they can at least whack pinecones while they walk.
Deep breaths Lou....let the anger leave you....Kum-by-ya...... ;-)
Real trad guys shoot these.
I like both Forums, I hunt with both recurves and compounds. I would say I have killed more critters with a recurve but not as many big game animals. Its all good and as Bowhunters we should not belittle each other too much!(some but not too much) Scooby
Like to seeya cock that thing sonnyboy
I really don't care what kind of bow anyone chooses to shoot, crossbows included, as long as they practice with them and they never attempt shots on game any further than they are proficient UNDER HUNTING CONDITIONS.
All I ask in return is the same consideration.
I'm still laughing at the visual of Lou's buddies whacking pine cones with a 5 iron! LMAO
Hey, as long as they wear wool and fedoras I don't care what they do in the woods!
Remind me to tell you about playing "cane toad golf" with a five iron in our outback hunting camp in Australia. Good for the environment and great fun after a few cans of Tooheys!
Same old, same old, sh--, whew!!!!!!!!
It looks like some of the LW's colorful characters have hobbled over here.
The Leatherwall is great for shooting advice. Shooting it a traditional bow looks so easy and it is easy until you get a bad habit. There's lots of good shooting advice there.
But since becoming addicted to elk hunting Bowsite is more interesting.
Dale technically speaking that seems larger than a stick, I'd call it a branch.
Lost Man...I would go with "limb"...due to girthiness
That is not a branch! I am an official TBSA measurer and it appears that stick has only one terminal growth measuring less than 5 CM at its base! Besides it looks like it was photoshopped to make it look bigger and someone wittled on the end to make it look like an even bigger stick to make it qualify for the trophy stick category. I call BS! Who caught that stick anyways, I bet they got it out of season from a man made pile of sticks!
Not a stick, it's one of them trad bows missing the string.
I personally think it is a deadfall support. At one time it may have been a stick. Times change. :) if it wasn't for Pat screwing up the old format by putting in a better one.... well now we can see that at one time it was a trad branch JMOHO
The "stick" pictured above is wood, more specific, firewood.
I'm just impressed someone said "throwing shade" on bowsite. I thought I was Instagram for a minute.
As strictly a trad bowhunter, I am definitely stuck in the 50's and 60's. Leatherwall is pretty strict on threads and tradition whereas I find Bowsite to be very open-minded as they lead the way into bowhunting's future with crossbows and bowguns.
Am am old LeatherWaller and visit regular, but don't post there much anymore, only because most subjects have been cover before.... How many times can the right stickbow, string, and right arrow and broadhead be discussed over and over... That is why I personally post here more because of more open subjects...
lawdy - "Bowsite to be very open-minded as they lead the way into bowhunting's future with crossbows and bowguns".....
Ummmmm, I really don't see that, last I knew xguns were against Bowsite rules, although have seen some threads mentioning the subjects to stick around too long (in my opinion), BUT the thing to understand, this is Pat's site, and the owner can do anything he likes, we are just visitors, BUT am sure he would alienate a lot of Bowsiters like myself if crossbows and bowguns were accepted as the norm... Would be a slippery slope to accept those kind of devices, if so might as well allow firearms, firearm ammo data, scopes, calibers, etc... Yeah the LeatherWall is strickly so called traditional or classic, and this side is much more open, with different big game forums, would no longer be a BOW site if all weapons were accepted...
I'll have to come over here more often. This has been fun.
y'all are funny. Looks ain't everything though.
I don't hunt with compounds or crossbows, but I do hunt with all sorts of firearms and trad bows.
Some of the folks here poking fun at the Leatherwall boys & visa versa might find themselves either in the same foxhole soon, or farther apart than ever. :^)
Some really amazing archers over on the Leatherwall. I always take a little time to read what's going on over there. We are not that different really , all brothers in archery.
Never been on LW. Looks like I haven't missed much. Then again I shoot training wheels without sights. They might try and convert me.
If I wanted snobs, I would visit the Bickersons on AT.
I quit going to the LW when they started accepting carbon arrows (after George D. Stout's proclamation that they were ok), and also when they accepted carbon lams in "trad bows". That was way over the top, and offensive to my delicate sensibilities.
Plus, I have never seen a thread on the LW that references yoga pants, probably because most of the dinosaurs over there wouldn't understand the significance relative to the history of archery.
Looks like the thread on leatherwall talking about this thread, has been erased.
I see they had a thread about this thread over there, it's closed. Lol
There you go! That's what I'm talkin' about! Why on earth would a mod pull a thread about this thread. Oh wait, I remember now...
The only people who get their feelings hurt about what either side says on an Internet forum are those who spend their lives cranking out thousands of posts and giving their opinion on every subject.
BSBD, I respectfully disagree. Those who get their feelings hurt by internet posts are those who take themselves way too seriously (usually with low self esteem) and are unable to lighten up and take a step back to grasp what really matters in life.
In the Army, we used to say "Check your feelings at the door, if you bring them in, they will get hurt".
"...those who spend their lives cranking out thousands of posts and giving their opinion on every subject."
You say that like it's a bad thing. Some of us just can't get enough of bowhunting and that's all we talk about... I bet if you and I were stuck in a tent for 3 days in the rain, all we'd talk about was bowhunting.
Speaking of hurt feelings
You got that right Lou.
I like the Leatherwall for what it is, a traditional archery forum, because that's where my interests are but when it comes to hunting there is so much more being discussed over here and it's not just stand sitting.
I guess I like both but as Lou so eloquently puts it, tradholes can sure wear on ya!
OMG PECO! That's perfect!
On a lighter note, a judge just ruled that it's legal for girls (oops - women..) in our college town to be topless, anywhere, anytime. That's progress I can support!
Lol, we had those floating around work a few years ago. Funny stuff.
Lou, that can't be true but if it is it certainly complies with making America great again.
you missed it totally it is not about the argument, it is about the potential uses for said object that you argue about. I can see it as a knife handle, or a quiver decoration, potentially a hand carved turkey call, hmmmm that thing has leatherwall written all over it.
Jaquomo's Link
tradmt, absolutely true! Check out the guy's eyes in the photo in this news story. Priceless! We have it great here in CO - Trad guys shooting right alongside compounders at 3-D shoots, OTC elk, weed stores on every corner, now "Free The Nipple".
No wonder our area is one of the fastest growing in the country!
This is really rich. You guys talking about how "arrogant" they are over at the Leatherwall. Take a long look in the mirror!
I just looked in the mirror and saw a lifelong bowhunter who has had great success with longbows, recurves, and recently a compound, hunting and killing actual big game animals from the ground with all three weapon types. More with longbow than anything else. I saw someone who doesn't take himself so seriously that he feels the need to tear-down other hunters for their choice of weapons.
They may not rip the Big Game Forums over there, but they sure do rip compound shooters. I was even shredded once for promoting carbon arrows with a longbow. Told I might as well shoot a compound, blah, blah. Then George D. Stout pronounced carbons acceptable a few years later, so they became OK (as long as they have fake wood grain, LOL!). And the entire vibe of the LW is seriously lacking a sense of humor.
The LW attitude was expressed perfectly and succinctly by someone who wandered over and posted earlier on this thread: "Go shoot your training wheels". There you have it, in a nutshell.
There is a couple on the LW,one in particular, that weigh in on EVERYTHING. And that one is like a god to some of the sheeple. With that said I have read some very spiteful comments directed at tradbow shooters on this forum. At the many 3D shoots I have attended over the decades there has been two compound shooters that would have made a child or a woman (maybe even a modern day girlie man) cry. I took the comments in stride and let my bow and arrow do the talking. Humbled both of those arrogant a-holes real quick.
Jason, you should post that over on the LW except change it to ""Where compounds hurt you".
Except it would be pulled within 15 minutes. ;-)
I might as well try to shoot arrows out of leaf blower as a compound for all the personal enjoyment I would get. At the same time, I'm sure many compound users could say the same for shooting a longbow. I think it's sadly pathetic to see ANY bowhunter trash another guy's legal weapons. I've shot along with wheel guys many times and the usual talk is pretty fun. At the same time, I too have heard too many 'traditional' guys apply the time-honored bashing and open dislike toward compound users. I know it's not all trad guys and maybe not a majority even who feel this way. It just takes a few to get the whole village stirred up over nothing. I am just clueless about the origins of the bigotry which exists...truthfully...in people on both sides of the equipment discussion. I've never felt that way and have little use for those who do.
Jaquomo,
I've done similar in the past. It wasn't well received. :)
It goes both ways. There are tradholes on LW, what are the wheelbow guys that hate trad shooters called? I know one, can't remember his handle, according to him, 98% of trad shooters suck.
The resentment against technology is most visible in the introduction of modern muzzleloaders in my state. We lost part of our season and went from 10 days of either or to 8 days of bucks only. The introduction of compounds was rocky as Fish and Game went from 50% letoff to what we have now. Again, we have seen season reductions in our Northern zones. Crossbows are now outselling compounds up here and as the push to allow them grows, we will see further reductions. You cannot stop technological progress. Just look at computers and how they have taken over our lives. Ten years from now, these comments will be directed towards backward compound users. Us trad shooters will be drooling in nursing homes talking about the good old days.
I personally wasn't around when carbon arrows weren't allowed to be discussed on the LW. If I had been I would have made fun of those G Fred Asbell wannabe fedora hat back quiver wearing old farts. I shoot a recurve because I'm an able bodied male who doesn't need the bow to letoff any draw weight for my feeble joints and back muscles. I shoot metal riser ILF bows with carbon and foam limbs because I'm an apex predator. It's convenient for some people to blame their poor shooting skill on bows old enough to draw social security and inconsistent warped arrows made from glorified kindling. Kinda like when compound shooters blame their release for getting hung up, their sight pins for getting bumped, their rest for getting stuck etc. I wouldn't shoot wood arrows if there was a chance that carbon arrows could give you AIDS.
I already have my nursing home picked out.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ohio-nurse-captured-video-forcing-lap-dance-100-yr-old-man-article-1.2979115
Kung fu, I like you.... We should have a beer sometime.
DaleHajas - Anyone can see that is not a stick but rather a limb.
Lou, I would like to join you and kung fu, you host, in your topless town. Let's wait for the weather to heat up just a bit. In the meantime I am loosing all of my carbon arrow, I don't want to catch AIDS....... LMAO
“It's disturbing... She is touching him,” Bath added. "This was not something he wanted."
When I'm 100, this is definitely something that I will want.
I, Ike Henry, being of sound mind and able body, do hereby release any of my 20-something female caregivers of all charges stemming from lewd and sexual acts performed upon my person, irrespective of my age or level of dementia.
I hope Kung Fu sticks around. He has brought some serious game on this thread.
I'll show up in Boulder topless boys. :)
Also....I don't see anything wrong with range bale accuracy. Just grip it and rip it.
Jacquomo thanks for the invite.
Bowfreak, I'm here to stay.
Who needs warm weather to enjoy FoCo? These nice days of 40-50 degrees just make the local sweater meat bounce like a couple bobcats fighting in gunny sack driving down Laurel Street.
Add in yoga pants and your insurance rates will probably go up
From "Is the leatherwall site down or is there a problem on my end?" to "sweater meat and yoga pants" This may very well be the greatest accomplishment of my life :)
LOL! I'll remember the condescension and comments about how judgmental the LW is the next time there's a thread about crossbows here on the Big Game forum!
The, "THAT'S NOT A BOW" Nazi's here can be right up there with LW's trad police.
Dale Hajas is the winner LMAO. Paul @ Fort well spoken. This thread is hilarious. Sitting in my chair looking at various self bows, longbows, recurves, and an elite energy 32 (training wheels) hanging on the wall. Almost forgot savage lightweight hunter in 270 there too. Love em all.
I can still hang with the trad and compound guys with my 55lb Bear Grizzly recurve
The spread-angle on those arrows indicate a shot distance of 3 yards. ;-)
Great thread. Filled with laughter. I've always wanted to try traditional but for the life of me I can't get myself to wear the required suspenders... :)
"The spread-angle on those arrows indicate a shot distance of 3 yards. ;-)"
Ha! I thought that was the max distance for trad shooting
Don't be knocking those suspenders, I bought a pair of pants from FirstLite that come with suspenders, only way to go!
Suspenders are only necessary if you're built like Governor Chris Christie.
I wear suspenders every day ! I guess I'd better unlimber that old Red Wing Hunter and string it up !
2/24/2017 time is 10:38 AM Leatherwall working fine for me! hope this helps.
yep....suspenders and wool absolutely required!
You get a pass on the suspenders because of that bad ass Magnum PI quality mustache. Two thumbs up.
Coyote with trad bow that is skill. Photo looks vintage, what year was it taken?
Hadn't seen a porno with a dead coyote and a quiver full of arrows in a while...
In my experience, anyone that wears suspenders has all the time in the world...
Actually Midwest, you can't get accepted into the LW club because that "traditional" bow has a stabilizer on it.
Pat's pornstache of yesteryear is jealous. There has been a lot of talk about next level but no doubt that is next level Nick.
The hell you do. I've been "over there" since 2004, and I'm in no one's clique. There's no better place in the universe to get a question answered about stickbows than "over there".....period.
Do some pontificate? You bet. Just like some do here. I usually just bypass that thread (like I do here), and sometimes I engage if the BS starts getting a tad deep. It's like anywhere else......everyone has an opinion and an anus, and they both stink....'cept your's of course!
It must be cabin fever time I guess!
Ok the shots at wearing suspenders just sent me over the edge.... Buckle up fellers:)
"Actually Midwest, you can't get accepted into the LW club because that "traditional" bow has a stabilizer on it."
Nope, still counts since I turned it on the lathe myself....ha! Circa 1980 something.
...and there is one very bloody arrow in that full quiver, Franzen, along with a judo point arrow that took out 2 squirrels that morning. :-)
Gawd, the cabin fever is rampant! LMAO on that "Mathews Trade Show"! Wiping the tears off to type!
Good day at the office, no doubt!
Since I shoot longbows I also go on the leatherwall... but could someone please tell me where that name came from?
A hide was at one time the way abo people communicated with pics drawn onto the hide, so folks passing by could see what was happenin'. A Leatherwall.
Kinda like a message board for neanderthals.... You know..... Like Facebook:)
I didn't know Ron Jeremy shoots trad?
I did not know the origin or leatherwall either, thanks for the info.
I don't reply much because I can't add much to what others that know more than me have already said. I shoot a longbow but I have noticed if I want to find tips on shooting or tuning my longbow, leatherwall has good info. but if I want to learn more about elk hunting or hunting other animals, I get more info here. I enjoy both.
And Franzen wins post of the year with his porno-coyote comment :)
Brian, Unfortunately, the 'stache is the only feature Ron and I have in common!
...at least size wise.
Time to harvest....meme season is here! Always prior to morel season with less taste of course
Ok serious post here.... Been on the LW since 97. Pa Conference mebbe earlier. Hayl the Pa conf was at one time the 2nd or 3rd busiest on the net.. Period! Then came deer wars and insults started...... There were no memes back then:)
I just started reading the Big Game conf a couple years ago. I like it for more hunting specifity. Trad guys are for the most part a higher percentage of Lone Wolves. But nary a one afraid to share, even to endless repetitive questions to new folks wanting to try the old ways. Kill a deer-any deer with your homemade selfbow and arrows and you climbed that mountain and stood atop that puppy.
The BGC shares those same traits. The mountains here are different. Post up that kick ass sheep hunt an epitome to most reading the threads. Bear hunt threads get me fired up as well as caribou. Elk hunts with incredible pictures well you get the picture. :) Of course Dennis taxidermy threads are the best. The trapline yearly is second to none.
I find that both conferences actually compliment each other. Seriously.:)
The genius of Pat's creation:
1. Big Game Forums/Home page Features
2. Leatherwall
3. State Forums
4. Community Forum
All thriving individually and collectively.
"The spread-angle on those arrows indicate a shot distance of 3 yards. ;-)" "Ha! I thought that was the max distance for trad shooting"
Naw, it is 17.5 yards. We settled that on the LW years ago. ;)
Personally I enjoy shooting traditional equipment. I didn't pay for your equipment so why should I judge you. I like both sites. But I do have to say I look forward to many posts on bow site: winter trapping, spring bear hunt, big Dan elk...etc. And then there are the serious hunt success changing posts such as Man Scaping. Come on you can't learn techniques like that on the leather wall!!!
I have got some info from Phil on somethings. With that said I think it's time for Phil to pull that stick out and build a bow out of that stave. He shut this thread down over there down 3 times and I blame Jaquomo.
FWIW- Phil has made a selfbow or 2. Ive hunted and shot with Phil and I can in all honesty tell you..... Well- I have hunted and shot with Phil :) George Stout too
I'm feeling good about being the Kevin Bacon of the Leatherwall????
Okie, tell Phil Phil that Jaquomo says hi and sends his warmest wishes! Hopefully he doesn't get tendonitis in his arm from pulling threads..... ;-)
To be truthful I tried a compound bow, a Ben Pearson, when that first came out in the 1970's even hunted with it. Then put it aside and went back to recurves. As of late I have been shooting long bows and really enjoy shooting with them. About a year or so ago I purchased a used compound all or mostly metal at least as far as the bow itself goes. I found that it to be overly heavy in actual weight not draw weight because that may be adjusted to suit the archer. I quickly went back to using long bow[s] and haven't looked back. Now I have no beef with anyone that uses compounds or modern crossbows for that matter. Go ahead and do your thing as long as it's legal. If someone decides to use that new fangled "air bow" or whatever it's called more power to them. I don't disparage anyone for using whatever legal hunting weapon they choose. and I ask the same of them particularly if that have not yet attempted to use the same or similar weapon that I do.
I too succumbed to the seductions of the compound bow for a short period of time. My masculinity suffered, testosterone dropped, Starbucks seemed like a decent cup of coffee, and I started to not hate Coldplay.
Kung Fu, you funny guy!! Neither bicycles nor compounds are gender specific. Using one or the other does not turn you into a women. Those inner femme feelings you have are there, don't blame them on bicycles and compounds.
I have no worthwhile input. I just keep posting to get this thread to 200, per Ike's request.
I think my next batch of popcorn is ready. It's a big kettle!
147 and counting...
Surely some more good 'uns being created out there!
I'm sure there are some gooduns' being posted, but they aren't as good as this one! At least, not yet!!
I tend to disagree with your statement on bicycles peco. Bows may or may not be "gender specific" [but I believe that a "pink" painted bicycle/bow to lean more to the feminine.] so if that be the case may indeed be "gender specific" It all depends on the perception of the individual I wouldn't be comfortable riding a "pink" bicycle or using a "pink" bow. But wouldn't hesitate to do so if the situation demanded it.
But you would ride a bike or shoot a compound. So it is the color that makes you uncomfortable? I would ride the hell out o f a pink bicycle, or shoot the hell out of a pink bow. I would not be uncomfortable until I did so in public while wearing my yoga pants.
Come on guys, just kidding, keeping the thread going. I don't own yoga pants.
I guess my masculinity would also suffer if I couldn't handle the power, speed and accuracy of a compound. :)
No GaryB@Home, your masculinity suffers because you have a basic name like Gary. You need the "power, speed, and accuracy" of a compound, not to mention the 80% letoff for your pre-osteoporosis bones and joints . Compounds are basically the participation ribbon and Corvette of the archery world, they're given to children and to aging soft men in pastel colored polo shirts, and younger men who've resigned themselves to a life filled with mediocrity.
The only thing that could improve this thread is if they let The Alabama Turkey Bow Master chime in.
I'm old...ish. Turn 65 this summer. Grew up when there was no "trad"...just bows 'n arras. Of which I shot happily thru my young-un years. Shot my first compound in 1977...Bear Polar II. Then switched to PSE...Pacer, Citation Hunter, Laser, Laser Magnum Express (1st cam bow), and I can't remember the next evolution of cam models.
My boss and I traded bows like an arab horse trader...and had a lot of fun shooting each NEW & iMPROVED (faster) incarnation. I went from bare bow fingers to every aid I could attach...and shooting was fun...and easy (that oughta fire y'all up). After about 10 years and a lot of venison, I got the itch to return to my roots.
I started with Bear...60lb Kodiak which stacked like a bitch! Switched to Black Widow 65 and 70lb. Shot them for years, with the same bow trader boss's custom longbows thrown into the mix...76 & 83lb. I've passed the Widows down to my son who's been shooting them a lil over a year after hunting with compounds from age 12 to 28...at 29, last season, he killed a buck and a doe here in Wisconsin and gave his compound to a buddy to use...he's hooked.
I've still got those heavy weight Hill style longbows, and can't even string em anymore...lol.
I'm now the proud papa of 1 custom recurve, and 1 longbow made by the same bowyer. 52 & 53lb...this gittin' old crap's kinda hard on a fella.
I'm also over on LW. Some good guys over there, and some...not so much. I'd say the same for here. I've made a couple good friendships "over there"...I peruse the threads, wade thru the b.s., and take in what's entertaining or helpful.
Here is where I come for a hunting slant. While I've not made any cyber-friends here, there are more hardcore hunters...especially in regard to elk.
All this said...we're all archers. As far as this name calling elitist bullshit goes, pot, meet kettle.
Fire away boys............
TTT..... for Ike..... heheheheh.....
More hardcore hunters here? No, more hunters, using compounds. Whatever the ratio is of compound hunters to trad hunters, the hardcore ratio should be the same. I bet within each group, the percentage of hunters that are hardcore, is higher within the trad group.
What constitutes a hardcore hunter? To me, it doesn't mean your choice of weapon. My grandfather I would call hardcore as he hunted both recurve and rifle. He shot all his deer by tracking. When I was 12 he would walk behind me as I followed a deer track, grabbing me by the collar and hissing in my ear, "slow down, dammit, you are going too fast." I am now doing the same thing with my granddaughter with her recurve or 243. She almost had a bow shot this past fall, but the deer stopped to stare at us just out of range, and one when she had her 243 jumped up and blew out of there. She is only 10 but loves hunting and trapping.
If you can remember the last time you bought meat at the grocery store, you ain't hardcore.
By the sounds of it if you don't drag your knuckles on the ground on one hand and drag a women by the hair behind you in the other, you lack masculinity and are not hardcore.
I simply cannot afford to pick up my old Browning Nomad anymore.
Last time I did was when I was getting ready to head out hunting. All dressed up in my Sitka gear and was just kinda holding the old stick'n string to more or less get it out of the way. It was still in my hand when I turned to the full length mirror [man's gott'a look good to hunt good!] to tuck my locks up into my Jetstream beanie, with just the right amount carelessly waving free.
Well crap!! Right before my eyes my beanie turned into an old fedora with the crown chewed out by a packrat, the $500 Cloudburst jacket faded to a black and red mackinaw, my pants turned wooly, grew baggy and hung loose on the stretched old suspenders.
And, man I looked OLD!!!
Glad to see someone stirrin' it up:)
You're catching on Velvet Muley.
All right, this is probably the most I've ever posted on a single BS thread (that is Bowsite thread), but I'm going to chime in one more time as we approach 200. My first bow was one my folks paid an old man a dollar to whittle out of cedar for me. I grew up shooting a recurve (first bowkill was probably either a grasshopper or little frog, honestly don't remember). I switched to a compound for 2 years. Killed my first archery deer with it while the man that taught me to bowhunt lay in a hospital bed dying from cancer. I was able to tell him about it before he passed away.
I gave up the training wheels and went back to a recurve because to me it was more fun. On a slow hunting day I'm liable to quit deer hunting and go back to shooting grasshoppers or leaves simply because it's fun.
I will admit though there have been times after reading posts on here that I have hung up the recurve for the day and picked up the crossbow I bought for my 90 year old Daddy and gone to shoot a doe off a feeder just to aggravate folks here. ;)
Ambush, don't fret, deer don't care what you wear. They are colorblind and wool is fur, which means that for a second, time enough to whip the string back on a longbow, their brain is trying to figure out what the hell you are. If you release about 2 feet ahead of where he is heading, he should run into your arrow. Chased these things for 59 years wearing wool but no fedora. I like my old wool boonie hat. Deer up here see so much camo that when I put one out of his bed, they don't know what the hell I am.
Not sure if they have a moderator or a hall monitor on the Leatherwall but they do have a rash of threads with: "Sorry, this topic has been closed." Makes a person want to know what was so bad that the topic had to be closed.
Kung Fu is my kind of guy.
My neighbour bought a sleek and slender, smooth and polished, ivory accented longbow to help him get in touch with his "feminine self", on the advice of his Life Coach.
He said it worked so good he has urges to have sex with himself, but then he develops a headache.
I've totally enjoyed this thread, a great mix of all that is bowsite. Sarcasm, Insults, History Lessons, Wit (occasionally reaching actual humor), Hubris, Knowledge, Arrogance, Outrage, and probably some other stuff I'm just not bright enough to pick up on. To those of you who have wandered over from the Leatherwall, welcome, Now get the hell out! Just kidding, you can stay, it takes an awful lot to get a thread locked here, or get kicked off.
I hesitated to post here, NOT (as Jaq is thinking), because I had nothing worthwhile to add (when has that ever stopped me?), but rather because all to often, when I post on a thread, it becomes the last post, or nearly the last (and I really want it to get to 200, just for Ike). I'm getting somewhat worried that I may have to change my name to ThreadKiller. Maybe this can be sort of a test. Carry On.
Here ya go Ace. :)
We can do 200 easy.
Ain't it a b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l day today! Sun is shining, the breeze is blowing and the ol' BS is as strong as every.
Compound shooters on Bowsite be like...
be like... I kinda figured that Kung Fu was a decent shot. Lights out on that Block dude. Kill 'em with a thousand cuts, ... well, 10 arrows give or take.
My first bow was trad...
So much admiration for those guys, especially the selfbows, but it ain't for me. I have a job, friends, family, and a few other hobbies beside archery. Plus I'm no Robin Hood with my compound.
LW litter box must need cleaned out. Looks like all the pussies are coming over here to sh!t. ;)
On our way to 200.....
On our way to 200.....
Here.... "I give to you 200"
Just twenty more to go!
For a couple of years, at 3D shoots, I thought that the excited "I got foam !!!!" was some kind of Trad greeting or invitation. It was often spoken with great exuberance when we walked up.
When I started shooting the local 3D's, I knew there was a different stake for the Trad guys. What confused me was why the club would hide that stake on the other side of the target. When we would approach the target, the whole trad group would be shuffling and kicking around back there looking for the stake and often left without even shooting.
One thing about Leatherwall, you won't see a thread about a new overpriced camo pattern that is claimed to be a "game changer" making previous camo patterns obsolete. Please. Too much fan girling going on over here about "fashion". You guys know the thread I am talking about.
I'm still waiting for you traditional guys to tell me why you wear suspenders?? I bet you could post a picture without a bow and i could tell if you were a traditional shooter (most likely suspenders and goofy hat) or compound guy. BTW, my best friend is a traditional guy and would NEVER shoot a compound. He's badass ...
I wear suspenders to keep my pants up. I wear loose pants and suspenders work better than a belt. Belts work fine with tight girly pants.
"My new Super Sonic, Lightspeed compound is crazy fast!! And now that I'm using mechanicals and twelve inch fletchings, my broadheads and FP's hit in exactly the same general area."
When guys wear baggy pant its for one reason. You get old and you start shitting yourself so you need something to hide the depends.
Not baggy, LOOSE! Huge difference!
latest picture eight scrolls up from here---- If it wasn't for the leather[wall] I would not have noticed the bow at all
Dang there is a bow in that pic!
Old compounds: Left-Early 80's Bear Black Bear with Tradtech longbow limbs. Rt- Hoyt Ram Hunter with $60 samick limbs- a simple bolt on. Less than $200 into both bows TOGETHER.
Old compounds: Left-Early 80's Bear Black Bear with Tradtech longbow limbs. Rt- Hoyt Ram Hunter with $60 samick limbs- a simple bolt on. Less than $200 into both bows TOGETHER.
Lotta butt hurt bein handed out here.... Hope it finally dies:) You modern guys should take them old wheelie bows and put trad limbs on them. Its entirely possible in some cases the "warf bow" shoots faster than than the original wheeler. Cheap and they shoot like crazy!
The Dik punching bear may be the greatest meme EVER- hats off to you fuzzy! The Leatherwall Basement isnt far behind! Kevin why the TM? Midwest hope you are aware you are now the internet King of Foreplay with "Full quiver Coyote killin porn" genre. You are destined for world domination!
Ive got one more meme because I Do, on occasion, shoot a real compound bow-an old Hoyt UltraTech. It may get the thread pulled:) Heres to 200 and shoving the "Butt hurt" hread off the Bowsite cliff:)
No training wheels here!
No training wheels here!
Shot execution requires proper form.
I have a Bear, Black Bear riser warfed.
But I wasn't going to post that for fear of being labeled "Trans-Riser'ed".
Man up ambush! Heck that one uses an old Golden Key Futura rest:)
Dogs are liked and welcomed on the wall.
I think I could keep this thread going forever just by posting here every time a gold card carrying member of the Leatherwall started a non archery related thread that did NOT get closed, and/or vise versa.
Wow, maybe I should pray for sheep tag...
I took some time this afternoon to relax and watched a DVD where a very famous Bowsitter took a grizzly bear with his recurve (at very close range), then a nice whitetail buck with his recurve also a Tom turkey, a big hog and a bunch of fish with his recurve. The only time in the video his nerves were challenged was when he decided to hunt Africa with his compound. Seems a little snake got in his blind got the better of him. I wish those African animals had fallen to his recurve but that's ok. That DVD was from 2004 and I'm sure he got over the snake incident. "Beyond Adrenaline" is worth the watch. I'm glad he started and we get to enjoy the Leatherwall. Pat, thank you.
I don't like snakes either, and I am secure enough in my manhood to admit it.
Made it Ike. Put in for that sheep tag!
Also in that DVD his wife took a nice hog. She's a good shot. His son was featured as the "worlds greatest tracker" - one of my favorites. Time flies. That was 2004 and now 13 years later I wonder what his son is up to. Is he still with dad on hunts? I guess I wonder cause I don't have a son but am fortunate to have grandsons who like the woods and shoot the bow and I get to be their mentor.
I have this feeling.... a sense..... a disturbance in the Force......
TBM is here.......
Why that's a damn good lookin dog peco...!
Thank you! He's a big Teddy bear, gonna be 15 years old next month.
"Dogs are liked and welcomed on the wall."
Haha, like in the threads about folks bringing dogs to trad shoots? Those are hilarious...
Will I fit in on both sides or neither?
This has to be one of the funniest threads on BS in awhile! LMAO!
Is that a new Kaitlen Jenner bow Glunt?
Which bathroom does it use?
Oh yeah, I forgot about the dogs at the Classic thread.
What a beauty of a contraption you got there Glunt!
Dynabo! Not mine, just pic off the web. I wanted one badly back in the day.
The Most Traditional Archer In The World
The Most Traditional Archer In The World
I'm amazed that this thread has one of the highest amounts of posts, I thought BS had no love for the archers of the world, I guess I was badly mistaken;) this thread is actually going to compete for numbers of post right up there with the fake bear killer, dare I mention his name. It's nice to know that the wheels guys love the trad guys, sort like the little boy in school who is mean to the girls he likes. All this time I thought us trad guys were hated, but I guess it's not true:)
LB, when I was a trad shooter trad guys liked me and compound guys respected me. When I bought a compound to see what it was like, compound guys liked me and trad guys disrespected me.
Since then, a number of trad guys (who've observed that the switch didn't cause me to grow breasts) have quietly approached me about also considering the Devil Bow, but are afraid of the trad-shaming that would follow.
Funny, but for some reason I never experienced any compound-shaming when I switched back to a recurve.
Couldn't leave it die could ya.....This is Dale on my IPhone.
Pffft...this place ain't got nothing on the Bowhunting and General forums over on AT. That place has more drama in one day than an entire months worth of afternoon soap operas.
IS this what the LW is like all the time? If it is, I'm gonna be a frequent flyer over there. This is rich!
When I pick up my compound to go hunt... I don't give two craps what anyone thinks. When I pick up one of my recurves to go hunt... I don't give two craps what anyone thinks. This thread is dumb... and I'd bet nobody gives two craps. :)
Carry on.
I've hunted with only trad bows for 30ish years. Told my hunting buddies if they ever see me wearing a fedora to please just shoot me immediately.
I've hunted with a compound for 30 years and I own a fedora??? Am I a closet traditionalist?? I scared! I even wear it with my Sitka gear sometimes... OH THE CONFUSION!!!!
SBH, a thread like this wouldn't last 15 minutes on the Leatherwall. They'd all be running for their virtual "safe rooms" and seeking trauma counseling. Heck, three threads just talking about this one have been pulled there in the past week. Some who wandered over to check it out are now permanently scarred...
It's what makes the Bowsite great - adults can yank each other's chains and if anyone is offended they're free to go over to one of the Snowflake Forums. OTOH, AT is like a bunch of drunks having a food fight at Taco Bell at 2 a.m.
Scar Finga, you are crossing forbidden boundaries!
Funny I am on the leatherwall quite a bit, I shoot both compound and traditional equipment, which by the way I hate that word. I am a bow hunter and a bow shooter, makes no difference to me what you shoot as long as it is not a cross gun. I have had a hundred trad shooters t my house for bunny hunts, they all I know I shoot both, not one of them has a problem with that. I agree there are a few snobs on the LW but no more then here on BS! Scooby
Does this woman still shoot for Martin? She goes both ways, compounds and trad bows.
Laura Francese. Last I heard she had a baby that had some health issues, and is at home being a mom. Pretty much dropped out of the pro archery scene.
This can easy go to #300.
A hardcore trad guy that I heard of has a long bow tattoo strategically placed across his butt cheeks. As he bends over the limbs arch and at "full draw" it can be seen that the "center shot" is bang on.
Well, at least that's what the other trad guys, that shower with him after a shoot, say.
Made it to 200 + posts and you guys are crowing? Pshaw, I remember back in the day on the Wall when we regularly hit 500 posts. Even made it to 1000 a few times. Once with a Dead Cow and another where Tink was trying to get a feller for a sweet Louisiana gal.
Was that the gal with the squirrel feet earrings..... Only second to "Bow test on a dead cow"
The greatest quote EVER: "To arrow is human... to shoot Bovine"
The dead coyote full quiver porno is right behind.
No, this was Bayou Girl, she came after the squirrel foot earrings. I had forgotten about them. Gotta Oppossum was also one of the best.
Bunny hunter:)
I dint think bow test on a dead cow can be found. It had to be removed because of the shear volume lol
Good one Brad, I had the metal detector out a few times in the last week! LOL
The wall had the classics. I think Fuzzy was the eventual winner in the skwerl feet drama, but I don't know how it ended. I think I sent him some elk ivory to sweeten the pot.
Back to the present, the two best hunting stories I've found on the net have been Kevin Dill's moose hunt and the boo and sheep hunt Treeline just finished. Both featured longbows, my weapon of choice since 1993. Everyone who reads this can say "I don't care what anyone else hunts with, it's their business", but I think there is a little bit of pride in the stick bow ranks for what these guys accomplished. I'm pretty sure there will never be a negative comment about either of those hunts from the entire spectrum of the hunting community, unlike when a picture is posted of some potential record book animal and the skeptics/haters come out in force.
I'm going to have to admit, when I'm reading a story on Bowsite, and the rifles come out, I quit reading. It may be interesting to some people, but it's a different ball game to me and something I left behind back in my twenties, and I'll be 67 this fall. Not sure why people think bowsite is about rifle hunting, but then again, I think I know why.
Anyway, Lou, how come you know so much about all those wimin, and have you tried some of the new weed to quell you angst?
This thread inspired me to check the LW out for the first time. I started reading one thread and some guys were complaining about TBH magazine having camo advertisements.
Apparently, "designer camo isn't trad." To be fair, most of the comments ridiculed this assertion as nonsense.
Nonetheless, I think the LW is too next level me for, though I own several fedoras.
I can't even shoot my training wheel bow worth beans.
MarkU, I only know about Laura because I read something about her not long ago. I know about hippie chicks in Laramie because I've spent a whole lot of time in that fine town, and I know a bit about yoga pants since I live in a college town that's one of the fittest in the country, so yoga pants and the things that go inside them are ubiquitous.
Other than that, I don't know much...
lol..Hey MarkU, yep, I won the squirrel feet marathon, got the girl. I really appreciate the elk ivories, Judy didn't like the idea of earrings, so I just carry one for hunting luck. I hope you don't mind.
O'reilly's LW word for the day: 'Tradsnobbery'....do not exhibit 'tradsnobbery' when writing to the LW.
Until this morning, I thought this thread had been flushed down the toilet but then I decided to reread it all.
I just picked my self up off the floor from laughing so hard. MORE, MORE. Well maybe not as I can only take so much. my best, Paul
PECO - That chic in the camo pants is probably a 15, 10 body with 5 face...8^)))
Zbone, the chick in the camo pants is Laura Francese, former Buffalo bills cheerleader, Martin pro shooter, successful bowhunter. By your scale she's a 21... 10 body with an 11 face. Google her, sit back, enjoy...
As usual, Jaq is dead on! She is a beautiful woman!! Scar.
Yes, I have seen her and she is HOT!!! Is Martin still using her as their girl, cause if not I think she would make more carrying a Matthews in shorts:)
How about the girl who dropped her panties down around her ankles...what does she score?
Unfortunately, those panties are around the ankles of Bruce Jenner.
Laura proves that art camo does not work. The art camo was unsuccessful in breaking up her outline. She is a beauty and definetly ups the bar on the "Hottie" scale.
Bruce Jenner....... LOLOLOL
So if Bruce Jenner takes "girl" pills to reshape his body, does he now have recurves?
I've been on the LW for many years. I ventured over here for a breath of fresh air. You can only read so many dog and what was for supper threads you know what I mean?:)
Fuzzy, that's great. I had some ivory earrings made for my wife and I don' think I've ever seen her wear them. I'd pack a few around for luck, but I think it' bad karma to posses parts of animals I've killed while looking for their kin.
Woods Walker and Cnelk, if you take your target pictures over to the wall, you will get answers to help out with that bad form and flinchy release.
"Woods Walker and Cnelk, if you take your target pictures over to the wall, you will get answers to help out with that bad form and flinchy release."
Roger that (no pun intended). You'll get 60 different suggestions from guys on what to do, which may mess you up worse than when you started.
LOL! If that was my group I wouldn't need anyone to tell me what I did wrong. In fact, I'd know where that bad arrow would hit when I released!
well, Mark, there's nothing around here that's close kin to an elk so I'm good.
Martin's strategy in using Laura was brilliant, in a couple of ways. Look at the picture posted above (I've looked at it quite a few times) and at first glance, do you actually see anything in her hand? No. You can't deny the fact that a modern compound is probably one of the ugliest pieces of shooting gear out there, and using her as attention deflection may be one of the things that can help sell a bow.
Put a recurve in her hand and have her hold it with a side view and you will see more curves that twenty miles of bad road. Some of them even on the bow.
".....you will see more curves than twenty miles of bad road."
My hero!
I've not noticed this before, but in this ad for a Venom longbow, she is holding a recurve in her hand?
Who cares about the stupid bow! There's far more important things in that ad!
I love Martin bows... Never shot one, but they make fantastic bows.
My wife shoots a Martin compound. I have had an X-200, should of kept it, a Hunter which was too heavy but a sweet bow, and I passed on a Mamba which I shot at RMSG, really kick myself in the butt for not buying that bow. I also had a Hatfield take down, again too heavy so sold it, made money on that one.
Looks like Lou's gonna be chasing down another poster for the cave......... =D
What was this thread about again?
If we get it to 300 Ike is gonna draw a Sheep tag AND a Moose tag.
"Looks like Lou's gonna be chasing down another poster for the cave........."
That's 'cause old guys like Lou will better off with the poster than the real thing.
Like dogs chasing cars. By the time you catch one, you can't remember why you wanted it in the first place.
Dang!! Didn't Lou's Bear (bare) poster have a recurve in it? Just goes to show you that if you want a really good picture, put a recurve in it. A longbow would be next best.
I kind of feel bad (not really) for the guys and gals who have to put up with the stigma of getting their picture taken with a modern compound, especially if it involves a dead animal. Excuses may be made, but it's like the guy getting married for the fourth time, telling his buddies "She's kind of hard to look at, but man, does she have money".
I've actually given some serious thought (not really) on how the modern compound shooter can escape the cone of shame (like when you take the dog to the vet) associated with a hideous contraption laying on a dead animal.
More to come, as David A. would say.
Told my Sons to Pack their Lunch..."Bowhunters are Bowhunters"...Carry On...4finger
Man, I go away for a few days and you guys turn this into a raging bromance thread that is slightly less painful to look at than your neatly pressed Kirkland jeans from Costco and your white New Balance tennis shoes.
Yea right kung....I left for Belize fishing the day the thread started...Hell I just get to Houston airport. And it's still rolling...Ahhhh I love Bowsite.....
But we DO have fun!!!
(And we don't have to carry around a Snap-On Tool chest as part of our hunting gear.... ;-)
Kung Fu, what kind of jeans and performance footwear do you recommend?
"That's cause old guys like Lou will be better off with a poster than the real thing"..
Uhh, speak for yourself Ambush. I have a lot younger wife and can still hang a boat anchor off that thing. Some guys age MUCH differently than others. I'm my case it's good genetics and good Scotch. My dad also looked mid 40s in his 60s. Thanks, dad! ;-)
Uh Oh, 300 here we come...
"....... and can still hang a boat anchor off that thing."
Ah huh. Got a ship in a bottle on your mantle?
.......that's missing an anchor?
PECO, it's all about the curves.
"a boat anchor"....damn I'm a pussy... Whhhhew
All depends on how deep the water is and how long the anchor line is!
"can still hang a boat anchor off that thing"
but, does it make your heels raise off the ground?
I use an old 16# bowling ball. Sometimes 2 of them.
"I use an old 16# bowling ball. Sometimes 2 of them. "
Tried that but all three holes were way too small.
I ran into Kung fu down by the pool ,,he had on orange parachute pants and a pair of fuzzy slippers his vision of " performance" may be clouded by his desire for style......
It's not easy being the man that the wives of LW'ers and Bowsiter's dream of.
"can still hang a boat anchor off that thing"
But why? I would believe that to be improper use of equipment. ;)
"orange parachute pants" LOL glad to see someone from LW made it out of the 60's/70's.
Agghhh I'm climbing out........Helppp. Mmmeee.... Peco, You old fool....I wore chute pants in 1980 bro.so keep that 70s talk to yourself.....I remember zipping up nutsack at a movie ....Damn pants were like a second skin.....Went backing ,, sat down bleeding....lmao
The news about this thread hitting #300 will be announced by the new Anchor Man.
I don't remember the 60's, I was negative 20 something years old. Unlike most of the decrepit blue hairs from the LW who smell like musty furniture and death. It's like a Norwegian Cruise line over there. You Bowsite regulars shouldn't get too cocky though, just because you don't yet qualify for AARP doesn't mean you're still relevant.
But Jaq, You looked mid sixties in ur early 40's... Revese Genetics??? :)
that weight stretching doesn't really work. Don't ask how I know.
The anchor man should weigh in next!
Come on Lou!
You are next up at the big 3-0-0!
You mean an anchor from this boat? (Sorry Lou, but you did set yourself up for this one!!)
"Did I make #300?" the coyote stated.
Hooray we made it to 300!!!!! Where do we go from here? Do we let it go, or aim for 500?
I would suggest "Death with Dignity", but this thread never had any to start with.
Hopefully the Anchor Man doesn't post up another x-ray, this one showing his anchor piercing.
This thread is a Seinfeld episode.
I went to an archery pheasant shoot yesterday and 99% were shooting stickbows. The other 1% were kids.
In the meantime, I'll rack my homebrew, German Alt Bier, to keg. I'm gonna need it if this gets to 500.
PECO, a Betty Crocker cookbook.....you must be old like me. :)
Good eye! The book is my wife's. We have my Mother's also, brings back fond memories of my youth.
"can still hang a boat anchor off that thing"
well yeah...... if I had some cams and cables I could too.......and likely hold full draw longer ..... =D
Harness that dog Peco!!....I m coming over for the home brew..We can get tore up and pretend to hit the target with our recurves!!!!
The dog is too old for any harnessing. We can get "tore up" then place arrows in the target for some "bogus" groups!
Haaaaa I'm in Peco!!...Kung Fu ,bring a fondue brother... I'll pick you up in my Vega... Bringing my bear Delta v...Was the fastest bow in the world when I bought er..1981 /or was it 82?? Too much weed...... Jeeze ..I'm exhausted....I'm staying home........
No aiming for 500, it's all instintive from here on!
} >>>>~~~~~>
I was born in 82 Savage... No real point to this post...but I kinda thought that was the point of this thread...good laughs guys!
Hey Salagi. This is Old Crow got a new phone modern LOL got the Bowsite on it thought I'd give u a shout Shoot straight and short blood trails. OC
