Got a BPS/Cabelas 2018 Master Hunting Catalog in Postal mail today.
Came across the page that states 170 stores and 6 distribution centers.
Found it interesting that Tx has total of 13 stores. Several of the locations are almost touching. Four locations in CO and the dots are touching. Looks to be Denver/I-25 corridor.
When will it start, where and how many stores will be standing after consolidation?
Not sure about Texas, but my bet here in Minnesota is the Woodbury store will bite the dust. Sucked from the day it opened.
Not sure what the star means, but we got a green star in Winnipeg, maybe it means they don't really know what they're doing with the place? Or, this is where we sell all our returned trail cameras that have something wrong with them?
Red is BPS; Green is Cabelas & Yellow is a DC
How many of you have received the notice from BPS that our Cabelas card will be eliminated between October and December this year and we'll have to activate a Capital One Mastercard that they'll send sometime within that time period? Since I'll be leaving the end of next month for over two months on my annual trip to Wyoming and don't get my mail sent out there I called them and asked if they would flag my account and not send me a new card until I get back. The lady put me on hold and after about 5 minutes came back and said they couldn't do that and will just send them out in no particular order. I told her that presented a problem for me because I have various bills paid automatically with my Cabelas card and I'm able to access my bank checking account on my buddies computer along with my Cabelas account on their website to see what my balance is to pay it from my checking account while I'm out there. I asked how they could help me solve that problem and she said she had no idea. Therefore, I immediately went into my Cabelas account and bought $100 worth of stuff I needed with my points and with the one day sale going on that day caught a free shipping day too and got my points down to $10. Then I went into my Amazon account and transferred those bills from the Cabelas card to my Amazon card. BPS can now kiss my hairy rear and I will not do any more business with them or Cabelas from now on and won't even activate their new card they're forcing on everyone when I do get it! Great customer service---NOT!!!
Stars are the company headquarters: Springfield, MO and Sidney, NE. Winnipeg must be Canadian headquarters.
May as well close the Cabelas in Columbus, OH......is basically empty now. Since BPS took it over they have SLASHED inventory on everything. Looks like a store going out of business.
I don't know what the heck they're thinking trying to sell Basstracker flatbottoms and modified V's here in Minnesota?!?! They got rid of Alumacraft and brought in their Basstracker line. One ride across Mille Lacs, Winni, Leech, or Rainy should be enough to tell you whoever's bright idea that was should be fired on the spot!
South Farm are you insinuating that those lakes get wavey? lol Last walleye I caught on Mille Lacs my entire boat fit inside between the swells until I gave my head a shake and got outta dodge. Fishing by myself second week of May.
With this aquisition, old Johnny might have finally stumped his toe. Oh well, he's got enough money to burn a wet mule, so this might just be a way to stifle the competition. A few years from now there might only be Basspro. I buy very little from Cabelas any more and nothing from Basspro in years. I do have a card, but I'm thinking of switching that to someone else.
Haven't had a card with either for years.
I received the same letter about the Visa card ending.
Any recommendations on a good Visa card to switch to? Something with cash back would be good. Didn’t know Amazon had a card?
+1 for the Citi Double Cash card....one of the best.
I have not received a cancellation letter. If I do, I will cancel my account. I already do most of my purchases on the Spark 2% card.
I hate Bass Pro! Since Cabela's was taken over by them the hunting line of clothing is crappy to say the least. I am a hunter, not a fishing guy.
I haven’t received a notice
Since Citi has anti-gun and anti-hunting tendencies, I will not use them. Amazon ownership probably does too, but that's what I'm switching to. At least they sell gun and hunting supplies.
Cabelas had better quality hunting and fishing gear than bass pro in my opinion. Will close out my cabelas card if it is being changed to bass pro. Kind of wondering if I should take in a bunch of old worn out stuff and trade up before they stop that program. Got several pairs of cabelas meindels and tents that are pretty well used up. Never have done that in the past but might now.
I just got the same catalog on the 25th. Amazing how I can look through pretty much the entire catalog these days, and hardly find anything that I'd really want. I'm not saying there aren't some things that I would take if someone gave them to me, but to actually spend the money to buy something for myself, there would be very few things. If I were Johnny, I would put the Cabelas line in front instead of the Redhead line, but I'm sure pride is getting in the way of that.
Im the same way Franzen. Was in the cabelas store in fort worth last weekend. Just went in to fondle some rifles I knew they had in stock. I have a few points to use up and really couldn't find anything I wanted enough to use them.
My card expires in September, new BPS card won't be here until Oct or November. Looks like I will be looking for a new credit card company.
Lots of stores, but NOTHING in stock!
Just got the new Fall catalog from Cabela's. Called to order a new set of Berber pants and jacket in the Out Fitters Series. There answer was!
"Not in stock and no reorder date". What happened to Calela's. I know Bass Pro purchased them but...
This is what happens every time corporate America takes over a business the accountants and efficiency experts are placed in charge and are given absolute God like powers to run the company. The only thing that matters from that INSTANT forward is profit maximization. All else is meaningless. Seen it happen to many times to count them all. Sadly it is happening right now where I work. What scares me is it's these same corporate Dbags that will without hesitation have a knee jerk reaction to a tragedy and stop selling certain types of firearms or items like hi-cap mags. Their marketing strategy and management mentality is without consideration to their customers wishes or beliefs, it begins and ends with profits.
I went into Cabelas this past week and couldn't even find a sales associate to help. The bargain cave was depleted of anything worthwhile and they even took the quarter machines away full of fish food to feed the fish. It was a ghost town!
BPS sucks in comparison and not like Cabelas is the perfect store but way better than BPS
I’ve noticed the same things with Cabela’s since the merger. And I stopped going to Dick’s when they decided to stop selling AR’s. I was at a local Gunshop in Clearfield, Pa last week. Bought a great T-shirt there! ;-)
A real image builder and stereotype breaker there for sure.
This is rural PA! They know their target audience! ;-)
Don’t care about building images or breaking steriotypes. Just standing up for what’s right! I also picked up this shirt:
They also had one that said “KNEEL FOR THE CROSS.....................STAND UP FOR THE FLAG!”
They are the biggest and most popular Gunshop in Pa. (and we are talking RURAL Pa! ) Still family owned and operated. Best prices in the NE I heard about this place many years ago and I am clear across the state!
Bou,
Since your so big on image building, care to fill us in on what really went down on that mountain lion hunt? If not, try to keep the condescending smart a$$ comments to yourself, please. Thank you.
Back to the thread at hand....BassPro sucks, Cabela's is owned by the same people now. I hope they both get better.
The consolidation of BPS and cabelas is for two reasons, to reduce competion and get more economy of scale. If you think it’s to help the customer get better quality, or better prices, or better service, I’ve got some real estate that I’d like to sell you. I’m not saying this is good or bad, just that’s just what it is.
It will be interesting to see how many do close based on over-lapping trade areas. Cabela's has always been a step above but yo need to be selective to get the best deals.
The OP described several of the TX locations as almost touching...it looks that way on the map, but it's deceptive. Here in N. Tx there are two Cabela's and two Bass Pro Shops, and there are plenty enough miles between them to prevent overlap. There are numerous locations of other outdoor stores like Academy and Dick's all over this area though that provide much more competition to worry about.
We have 2 BPs and one Cabela's in the KC area. I cannot believe how they took hunting clothing and replaced it with casual wear at the Cabela's. Not worth going into any longer.
I read someplace that former CEO of Cabela's said they were going to get out of the "blood sports" and focus on family clothing, outdoor entertainment and activities.
Never liked BP but I like to go to our AZ Cabelas just to look around. Rarely spend money there unless it is an exceptional buy. I did like some of their Cabelas brand camo (micro-tex)but they are discontinuing it and going to the red head stuff. Now I spend most my money at sportsmans warehouse.
Good riddance to Cabela’s!
The more I thought about the way they are cancelling our Cabelas card and forcing people to get a new BPS Mastercard I calledthem and went through about 15 minutes completely cancelling my current card. The guys made a final question and comment asking if I really wanted to close my account and lose my $10 in points and when I said yes he said then you won't be sent a new BPS Mastercard to activate and I just said that really breaks my heart, LOL!
I’ve been a Cabela’s Visa card holder for 20 years, and a black card member for 10. Since they went public and started to water down their selections, quality, and service, I’ve been looking for an excuse to change cards. The last 2 Cabelas that I visited were basically a giant Dicks sporting goods. It’s amazing how quickly that good name went downhill. Thanks Cabelas!
I'll likely give the BPS MasterCard a try and if I don't like it, then I will cancel. I'm a long-time Cabelas card holder and a black card member. The one thing I can say is that their fraud protection has been top notch. My wife and I have a joint card and they contact us with suspicious activity before we are even aware of it. This has happened a few times. Their card service people have been nothing but great to deal with. I will always be able to find stuff to spend my points on in their stores (ammo, fishing equip, broadheads, etc.).
Agree with Toby on the fraud protection. Just last evening I had my transaction denied when trying to rent a vehicle from Turo. After that I just called the 800 number and everything was settled. Great customer service from them as well. Don't plan on stepping inside the BPS / Cabelas much though.
Cabelas is a crap store.. It was cool in the 90s when things were cool. But I've always thought it was overpriced and too fancy for me.
I am in same boat as the rest here. I don't buy much from them because they don't have what I need but I am not sure if it is just poor selection or I don't need anything at all. What is it that they should carry and don't? Lots of the high end stuff is going direct to consumer. Example Stone Glacier packs. Also the stuff they do have that I could use is usually more expensive than other vendors unless you have a coupon code. For example I was looking at a small wall tent stove. Cabelas 250 vs Amazon 200. But I don't have a mastercard so may take them up on the BP card just so I have it when they run specials that you must use their card.
They bully small companys that want shelf space to below profit level margins then when time to renew Cabela’s squeezes them to either lower the price to Cabela’s or they will rip off the non patented product, put the Cabela’s brand on it and kick the small vendor to the curb. I know it’s capitalism at work. But if I am paying top retail, as Cabela’s charges, I would rather pay retail prices at a small Mom and pop business. Or buy direct.
