Nice fresh snow overnight time to go looking for a coyote or two haven't heard them lately so maybe none around? Oh well at least it beats sitting on the couch.
used to track coyotes south of Moscow, ID when the navy sent me to college there. Open and you could see them a long ways off. Got 5-6 a year but it's tough.
I saw 6 from my living room yesterday from 600 to 2,000 yards away. Trouble is we have about 15" of drifted posthole snow. 29 below and that much work just isn't worth it.
Also it's noisy and they hear you at 500 yards.
Our season closed 4 days ago. I know good and well they have a season here for the same reason we can't hunt them at night, in the belief that it would cut down on deer poaching.
I read a great article (national mainstream news) yesterday about how coyote fur is increasing in demand for fur trimmed parkas, and with a shortage from Montana and elsewhere this winter, prices will be great for good ones, especially light ones.
Sal: had no idea any state closed season on yotes. We can hunt them at night in KS but cannot use a light because of the deer spotlighters.
I didn't have a bow or any weapon with me yesterday, but this one would not run away, just kept barking at me an the dog. Copy and paste to view. Let me know if it works.. https://youtu.be/WltimTS_31E
Our buyer in MT says color doesn't matter. We have gotten as high as $110 and as low as $40 for the broken (guard hairs broken) ones. Our numbers are less than last year and I've yet to shoot one in my bedroom slippers. Last year I got 4.
Spent an hour today watching 3 try to kill a mule deer. Snow is deep and the deer seem to be able to leave them in the dust. Smaller coyote ends up buried to mid chest. They made 2 attempts today and one yesterday.
Wish I had a 1000 yard gun.
Pretty sure the article I read was in USA today. They quoted some fur buyer as saying the white fur was in huge demand because Kate Upton started a trend with white fur on the Canada Goose parka hood she wore on the SI Swimsuit issue cover, and prime white ones were going for as much as $175 this year. But you're probably right. She sure looked good in that parka, though!
Still a lot of mange around here in N. CO. Not sure how well bare coyote skin sells....
I had a friend run a trap line on his deer lease in Arkansas because multiple packs moved in over the last couple years.-- He killed over 25 coyotes this winter (and 4 bobcats and countless coons/opossum) on his lease! So it may be fun to go and call in a couple yotes here and there, but if you want to put a dent in the population something more needs to be done.
Good luck to all coyote hunters and trappers, I appreciate your predator control efforts.
We have trapped and killed over 30 on our place in Tn 300 acres but we do see a difference. We had a beautiful 10 point killed year before last by a yote war was declared.Kill em all Lewis
Dang Jaq, tell Kate I got a few dead jack rabbits frozen to a sheet of tyvek on my garage floor, was gonna use em as yote bait but i’m sure if she’s interested I’d melt off a few for her
Keepemsharp, they will open the season back up during turkey season but then shut it down until July. Just enough to be aggravating. I think the wardens don't look too hard if someone shoots a coyote anytime, especially those of us with livestock.
The idea that there is a season for coyotes is probably due to lobbying by the auto insurance industry.
Trouble
Trouble
This guy knows he is in trouble. Always way more around than you think, 30 off a 300 acre leas is a lot!
I went scouting last week a day after a fresh snow and believe there was as much coyote sign as deer . They do cover some ground .
This one would not leave, just kept barking at us from 30 yds.
Guarding this. Had no weapon.
They can be bold and unafraid sometimes.
They are everywhere around here. We had just bumped some off these deer beds coming through here. Saw two. They are yipping every night behind the house. Prices are fair right now and they are prime. Hoping to get after some before 'season' closes. Yup, another NY state of mind(lessness)... coyote season.
Tennessee is open 24/7 365 thank goodness Lewis
I killed my share of coyotes in my day, growing up in Wyoming. But after owing a dogs for many years, I personally could never kill another coyote. After over 50 years of bowhunting they have my total respect for their ability to continue on in spite of all the efforts to eradicate them. In my opinion they are on of the smartest animals out there.
Have a great Bowhunt. BB
Lewis Az. is The Same 24/7 365.dirtclod Az.
I’ve killed 12 in Colorado and two in Kansas this winter. These were all called in coyotes. Likely will go out some more.
dirtclod,
My understanding in reading the AZ regulations is that it does allow for some 24 hour hunting of coyotes, in some specific units, but those units that do offer it only do so for 5 months, not 365 days. The rest of the year, and in the rest of the units, it's daylight hours only. The laws regarding predators are some of the most complexly written in the regulations, but that's what I understand from reading them.
