I like to browse Google News Archives for historical old west articles. It give you a perspective of western life at that time in our history. The attached article is from 1878 and details a buffalo hunt in Texas by a writer who accompanied buffalo hunters. It's a long read but if you're into the history of those hunts, you should like this. I attached a pic of the article's headline so you can find it at the link easier. You can see by the sheer numbers killed why the buffalo almost became extinct. Some of the places mentioned you can find on Google Earth as they are now historical sites.

A reported 8.5 million were shot inside a two-year span. These inflated figures do not match hide shipping records, but even if true, this number would not come close to matching breeding potential.
