A little dusting last night. I am on the volunteer fire dept/rescue. Busy Saturday. Deer in the ice, followed by 4 snowmobile accidents all at the same time. Two hit trees, one had a heart attack 16 miles in the woods, and one missed a corner. Two were air-lifted. I felt bad for the deer. Coyotes ran him onto the thin ice. We couldn’t reach him as it was just the Chief and I available. We shot him to put him out of his misery as the ravens had already nailed his eyes. Tonight ought to be busy with Monday a holiday and idiots on the trails.

Cool looking fish, Lou! That a Palomino trout? If so, are they a rare fish, or relatively common? Not much trout fishing in Iowa.

T-roy, they are palominos, a color phase rainbow. Many think they are "goldens" or a hybrid, but they are not. The hatchery I use raises them so we stock some with every regular rainbow stocking at the lakes I manage. They do reproduce, sometimes producing regular rainbow offspring and sometimes palominos. They grow a little faster than regular rainbows and are strange fish, like to swim shallower than other trout so ospreys and eagles pick them off.
But people love to see and catch them so we're lucky to have a good source.

Not sure. This is only the second time he has encountered one. Last year, he and my other two dogs had a stand off with 3 coyotes on my farm until I came around the cedar and started shooting. If we hunt with other dogs, he promptly picks out the biggest male and beats him up usually by flipping him on his back and pinning him to the ground. After that, he gets along with everybody. I think when he found this coyote, he was just going to try and drag him out of the brush pile so he could do just that.

Newfoundland hammered is an understatement. 30 inches of snow in a day with sustained winds of 100-150km/hr. Ya, that will add it up.

January 19 snow doe down - big girl
January 19 snow doe down - big girl
not much of a winter here in NJ - a few small snow storms, a few bad bad bad ice storms that left me enough downed firewood for several years. Not enough sustained sub-freezing temps to make safe ice to ice fish (love those ice fishing pics). All I have to show are some skipper bucks that I hope to see next fall and try to get them hitting the minerals hard all spring / summer.
Oh and a 1/19/2020 snow doe down, a big old doe that earned me a free ticket to a great venison dinner.
