Anyone have thoughts on how this will affect us remote outdoorsmen? I’ll bet it kicks the butt of of all competitors including Iridium, and I’m a big fan of Iridium. I can see a variety of handheld devices that provide better performance than smartphones that do as much and faster. This is to be smoking fast broadband too.

I find the concept awesome. I’d bet within ten years normal hand held cell phones can function anywhere off satellites instead. I still have my iridium phone but think I’ll be parting ways with it soon.

The whole concept is very cool and exciting....so is watching them streak across the sky in pairs upon deployment. Anyone else see that a few weeks ago (CO)??

SpaceX and Elon Musk doesn’t mess around. I fully expect this won’t take long. In fact, he says northern US And Canada will be able to subscribe later this year. The rest of US next year. This will kick the butt of cellular in the long run and provide high speed wireless broadband virtually anywhere.

Will be a great way for those who don't want to check in or be connected in the backcountry to stay disconnected. For others, it will be a valuable tool.

My understanding is this system provides home internet service. Not an alternative to Iridium, InReach, etc. They've stated that the motor-driven receiver unit is about the size of a pizza box and mounts on the roof of your house.

I predict it will work with handsets!
