Bill Gates yesterday:

"I do think all rich countries should move to 100% synthetic beef. You can get used to the taste difference, and the claim is they’re going to make it taste even better over time. Eventually, that green premium is modest enough that you can sort of change the [behavior of] people or use regulation to totally shift the demand," the Microsoft co-founder told the MIT Tech Review.

So I’m assuming we should be eating synthetic venison? Is that like eating a McKenzie 3D target?

These people are definitely entertaining.

If pink slime and store bought chicken are bad enough. Now they want people to eat synthetic beef. It’ll be a cold day in hell when I don’t have homegrown or home killed red meat in my freezer.

From: Ok...Russ

Please note very closely what he said "...or use regulation to totally shift the demand". To me that reads increased regulations on the meat industry until it's not as profitable as synthetic meat. I only like about 4 maybe 5 vegetables but more than willing to be a vegetarian long before I eat synthetic meat. The whole thing that scares me is going to be the push for synthetic fish, turkey, pork, etc...if the beef thing gets traction. I can harvest a couple of deer each year and provide the red meat we need then expand the garden because you know synthetic vegetables are coming - heard there's worm overpopulation in composted soils causing overcrowding and worm migrations into unwanted areas.

I think you selling it a little short. The McKenzie targets are hard/tough I guessing it is closer to Rinehart target. They always pull a little easier so I guess they'd be less chewy.

The thing is, there is a ever growing portion of America that agrees with his ideology.

That’s the dangers folks. The danger in liberal ideology. The danger in not standing firm for every facet of your Bill of Rights. The danger in any train of thought not aligning with conservative philosophy. It all leads to these kind of results.

I have zero issues with engineered meat. I'd argue it may be a super useful way to provide protein rich food to more people than we can get it to now. I get his point RE "rich" countries given shipping it to poor countries may run into similar logistical issues that exist for feeding them now.

That said, I'd err to supplemental not 100%. That's overly ambitious and doesnt fit reality - farming is an important part of life and of our natural habitat. Eliminating it doesnt make sense. But changing things so there is less "factory farming" and smaller farms can continue competitively, cool.

Well since the government subsidized farmers a decade or 3 ago, I guess we have to find ways to feed the masses. At one time America fed the world. After subsidies we are struggling to feed our own. The real losers are the farmers and ranchers. I wonder if that’s why they need more subsidies for deer, elk and antelope in the west?

I'm not against renewable energy but I think we need to realize that using fossil fuels has its place also.

My opinion, this isn’t so much to do with “going green”

This is the downfall of greed and capitalism. I still believe capitalism is the best system so I’m not bashing it.

Capitalism constantly depends on more. More sales, more profits, more customers.

These people know “natural” resources and process can only feed a certain amount of people. That’s where the limit is. What can the land mass naturally support. We are passing that mark or getting closer by the day.

So what’s next is manufacture our food supply.

That’s my dumb 2 cents on it all.

18-Feb-21
Synthetic meat should simply be another consumer choice, the concept should not be forced upon us in subtle ways by the government. Keep an eye on the quest towards carbon neutrality, the US food producers will be facing even higher production costs. These forms of increased taxes and costs will favor synthetic meats, and further shift meat production to other countries.

I'm just glad that he still maintained a small carbon footprint and does not negatively impact the environment with the billions of dollars he made from his products, manufacturing, and everything that goes along with all of that like his private plane, Porsche, mansion, etc....lol. I don't fault the guy for being hugely successful, rich, and all that comes along with that. It just seems hypocritical with not only him but all those Hollywood types that want to change things but still live the lifestyles that they do with properties all over the world, private planes, mansions, multiple vehicles, etc.

19-Feb-21
Microsoft is purchasing carbon credits through companies such as Truterra. It is no wonder he wants farmers pressured to create carbon credits, so he can purchase them to offset Microsofts use in the new tax mandate. Microsoft needs to purchase credits to offset their carbon footprint and lower their tax exposure. Gates is now the number one owner of farm land in the US, he will be able to reduce the carbon footprint on these lands and create his own credits. He is smart. US Food prices will continue to escalate.

From the same article. Like mentioned above, all about the money.

When Gates refers to synthetic meat, he’s likely talking about the growing market of very sophisticated vegan meat alternatives like Beyond Meat, but he’s also an investor in at least one true“lab meat” startup. These companies grow individual chunks of muscle tissue—that’s what meat is—separately from any living animal.
