The portal is not connected to the draw, never has been. They tried again this year to connect to the database and it's so bad they are entering data into portal accounts by hand.
Scoot. . . me too. I registered for the Wyoming Portal today, and it was so incredibly much easier for anything to do with Arizona I couldn't believe it. I don't know why their computer system is so crappy. . .
I might be proven wrong! Haha Definitely the longest time from cc deadline to cc hit since they’ve been doing this.
I said it before way back when they decided to “upgrade” their system: They picked the WRONG draw cycle to do this. The AZ elk draw is the most demanding. The fact they chose this draw cycle to make this upgrade shows their ineptitude! If it were a private entity, heads would be rolling for this decision.
Absolute truth. In any private organization this mess would have never been allowed to go this far. Government agencies don’t really give a damn though.
Just talked to customer service a little bit ago about an issue with my portal and she told me the draw likely won’t be until next week because of some issues they are having with their system
Don’t start loading the truck, even if, and whenever, your card does get hit. 3 yrs ago, I put in for elk and pronghorn point saver. CC got hit for elk tag amount. When portal info was updated, it showed elk unsuccessfull, and successful for a rifle pronghorn. What i ended up with, was lame excuse that “computer had a glitch”, and a refund.
PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) reminds hunters that the processing of draw applications for 2021 elk and pronghorn hunt permit-tags is underway. The deadline to submit applications was Feb. 9.
AZGFD continues to validate a record 170,000 applications, an increase of almost 18,000 over last year. As a reminder, a customer’s receipt is verification that their application was received by the department. There is no need to contact the department if a customer cannot view data (such as submitted applications, bonus points, license purchases) in their personal portal account at this time.
AZGFD expects to resolve this inconvenience once the draw has been completed and hunt permit-tags are issued. In the meantime, the department appreciates the continued support and patience of its valued customers.
There also is no need to contact the department about draw results. AZGFD will post an announcement on its website and social media channels when draw results are available. All hunt permit-tags will be mailed by April 2.
They've never sent out a letter like that AFTER the credit card deadline has passed. Thats pretty much a STFU letter to everyone.... lol......One thing they better add is an extension to the credit card update feature. How many guys played by their rules and now risk the possibility of their credit card getting compromised after the fact. It would only be fair they open up the credit card update feature again until they're actually ready.
Right now I'm kinda like a dog chasing a car..... I'm barking, running and trying like hell..... but not a clue as what to do if I happen to catch it.....
Our fate is already sealed, we just don't know what it is. Interesting observation regarding the CC's AZ8. Hopefully cards will be hit early this week. Good luck to all..
18000 seems like a huge jump in actual hunters. Been rumors last few years in Cali that non hunters (peta and other libs) have been buying 1,000s of tags to save the animals and sway the actual harvest data against animal numbers/hunters with an agenda. Wonder if this is spreading to az and other states.... or even true.
I have some doubts as to anti's applying. Having to buy a license to apply, that's a decent monetary commitment on the CHANCE they may cancel out a tag. I'm sure there are a few whackos out there, but most will lose their dedication quickly as the effort and commitment step up past twitter posts.... EDIT: Forgot the resident whacko participation is a fair bit cheaper..... have NR on the mind I guess.....
So NOBODY has seen any CC hits yet? Nada, nothing?
Anti-hunters buying tags and not killing would only be a short-term form of saving animal lives. As hunt success went down, G&F would issue more permits going forward to harvest the same number of animals.
It could also be people who always applied for elk and now decided to apply for antelope and the other way around too. Any way you look at it, 18,000 seems like a lot to me.
Virtually every western state, post-pandemic, saw a big increase in controlled hunt applications and license sales. In Arizona last year (2020), there were 155,000 people with elk bonus points and 134,000 with pronghorn points. So an increase of 18,000 would be roughly a 6% increase. Based on what happened in other states, that doesn't sound too far-fetched.
I have no idea when we will know but this new portal roll out a month before the draw really messed it up. Since some people have portal info on their apps and other like me don't they will not complete the draw until everybody's info is updated. That could take a long while when you have to manually input the information.
Some interesting stuff in there regarding people using their nonhunting, elderly mothers and fathers to accumulate bonus points to draw primo tags and then transferring the tag to grandkids to hunt. Sure, I suppose that’s legal but man that’s pretty shady and comes at the expense of someone else who has waited for that tag. Thoughts?
lineman21, if AZGFD has the rule and allows it, then I do it.
I've been putting my wife in for points for almost a decade now, with the full intent of transferring them to my boys when they can hunt. Even on youth cow hunts, they would be lucky to draw twice in youth ages 10-18. So, along with this potential, I want to try and get them another tag or two during this time.
I grew up in MO with tons of hunting opportunity. AZ has a fraction of that opportunity, so just trying to my boys a shot at catching the hunting bug.
BG, you make some good points. I have a son that I would love to take to Arizona hunting. I can see why you and many others do it. Not trying to be a “holier than thou” type here but it just doesn’t seem right to me. I feel like it sends the message to the kids that it’s ok to manipulate the system if the system allows it. Not saying I’m right or you’re right. I was unaware that folks were doing it and a bit taken aback by it.
All good lineman21. I agree with you on sticking with my principles, as I do with 99% of my life...but when it comes to instilling hunting with my boys...i'll do anything that is legal.
Also legal: Abortion, Satan worship, and dressing in the clothes of the opposite sex.
Loopholes exist in many facets of life and often times get closed eventually because they're not "right." Everyone else has the same limited opportunity that you and your boys do.
This post is really judgmental and I apologize for that. But I just don't agree with the "if it's legal, then it's ok" logic. And I practice what I preach and don't exploit loopholes that I could financially afford to exploit.
Bear Point transfer is very big in Wis . an interesting feature I recently found out about, is points are considered part of the deceases estate and can still be transferred even after the person dies. The legacy continues, wait until that feature catches on out west. transfer 30 sheep points to the next generation and the next.
The year 2069 Great-grandson Hiram Ledbetter finally draws with 80 points.
I actually agree with the ability to transfer points on to someone else after you leave this earth. You bought and paid for them, they have value, they are yours so why shouldn't a person be able to pass them on?
Because most point systems are already broken, and artificially increasing someone's point total to push them ahead of others, who may have already waited a lifetime to draw, is not right. But then again, I guess we're getting way off-topic here ;-)
IdyllwildArcher, understood and I'm just fine being judged:)!! It is not a loophole here in AZ, but an actual endorsed program by AZGFD...which is why they intentionally limit the transfer ability to youth (ages 10-18).
https://www.azgfd.com/hunting/tagtransfer/
I could absolutely see your objection if tag transfers could be to ANY age; however, getting youth hooked on hunting in AZ is a challenge.
“Victory without honor is an unsavory dish” Joe Paterno
This quote coming from the guy who looked the other way as young boys were getting raped & molested. You know what they say about people who live in glass houses.
I couldn't stop laughing as it's exactly the conversation with my kids and a few buddies.
Good luck everyone !!! Praying they don't call to change my card as I put in for the wrong unit and specifically changed my card so they wouldn't. Now with all the delays, I'm not so sure what will happen with a bad card #
AZGFD continues to process 2021 elk, pronghorn hunt draw applications
PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) is asking hunters for a bit more patience as staff continues to process a record number of draw applications for 2021 elk and pronghorn hunt permit-tags, as well as validate bonus points.
In recent years, AZGFD would have been expected to make draw results available by this time. This year, hunters submitted more than 170,000 draw applications, shattering last year’s record of more than 153,000. Another record: More than 214,000 applicants either applied for hunts or bonus points, compared to 194,000-plus in 2020.
As a result of the increased workload, hunters should know that AZGFD remains committed to ensuring the accuracy of draw results and providing quality customer service. The department will announce on its website and social media channels when draw results become available. All hunt permit-tags will be mailed by April 2.
In the meantime, some customers may not be able to view personal data (such as bonus points, submitted applications, bonus points, license purchases) in their AZGFD portal account at this time. AZGFD expects to resolve this inconvenience once the draw process has been completed and hunt permit-tags are issued. As a reminder, a customer’s receipt is verification that their application was received by the department.
AZGFD is aware that hunters are anxious to find out if an elk or pronghorn hunt permit-tag will have their name on it. To that point, there is no need to contact the department about draw results. Once again, AZGFD appreciates the patience and support of its valued customers. Did you know? Honestly their press release seems like BS to me. Computers don't care how many people applied. Now if they are doing the draw by hand, then I would get it. Better to say we are all jacked up and here is the date things will happen, but always as with any Gov. agency you never get the real truth. I'm sure they are good folks, just handling this poorly.
That's exactly what I was thinking HF. The difference of an increase of <20% should translate into an additional nanosecond of computation time for a computer if the system isn't programmed incorrectly in the first place.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. If this wasn’t the fantasy fun world of the government, the people who set this all up would be looking for new jobs. With it being government it’s just March.
Must be those extra van loads of applications that came in at 3 AM thaws need to add up! Those Dominion machines being used for this year’s applications might be having a little difficulty with the higher math... Make sure every application counts;-)

An update to tell us there is no update. This tells me they are having serious problems... They would have been better off to keep us in the dark. Heads would be chopped if this was a private company. Ed F
THis just has to happen the first year I put in for an elk tag in 12 years. . . . And of course the card company has reissued me a new card, even though mine will not be expired for some time. I haven't activated it. Wondering how long until they automatically deactivate the old one and I get screwed over.
This is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sorry, but I've been bitching for years about the unwieldy AZ system. It's extra ridiculous when other states have such easy and simple processes. I signed up for the Wyoming portal in literally 2 minutes.
It is 2021. There really is no excuse for this anymore.
If the government can't handle it (no F'ing surprise), then outsource it to a private company that will do it right.
Bake, that sucks. This is the real issue now as the CC window expands.
Here’s a crazy stat. The application period was open for 20 days. The update CC feature has now been closed for 12 days and counting. The window between the CC closed feature and actual draw may be longer than the application period was open. Lol
Bake, when your credit card company sends you a new one, it typically has the same number just a new expiration date. Any charges on the old card should be honored without a problem. You can call and ask them what will happen to any charges made to your old card. I suspect you will be fine.
Well, they best get with it..... my divorce lawyer's schedule is filling up and I need to make sure I get to him before, um, somebody else does..... you know, if I have to.....
Hmmm, so if it was that compromised they have to run all the drawings again, then what about those applicants who saw hits on their cc prior to now? Will those be honored or dissolved? I can’t see how anything resembling fair could come out of this if they don’t run the whole process from scratch so everyone is included not just those who have not seen cc hits yet.

Not surprised. A few years ago I drew a rifle deer tag for a unit (33) I didn’t apply for. When I told them the response was “ if you don’t like it don’t go”. End of story. Since then I always print copies of my apps as proof.
MT implemented a new system. I applied yesterday and it’s way better than their old system. I’m told they used the same company NV uses to design, implement and manage it. Not sure if that’s true but it was definitely done by a private entity. I’m not sure why AZ can’t figure out designing a computer based draw system with a web interface isn’t in their wheelhouse.
Just heard from a friend, whose friends girlfriend knows a guys aunt, who has a really good friend who knows a guy, that has a friend whose wife, knows a lady, whose husband knows a guy...That guy knows a guy, whose friend lives next to a state worker, who said it’ll be Monday...
In other news... AZGFD has announced that archery elk tags are expected to be mailed out by November 24th, 2021. This, however, cannot be confirmed. Stay tuned.
I’m having a really bad day!! Was notified at midnight that my cc was being charged but declined. I confirmed it was fraudulent and they immediately froze my cc. Had to have my card number changed as there is no other way Visa will remedy in these frauds. After a good conversation with AZGF my worst fears were confirmed. Since the initial draw run was not performed on the specified date March 6th, they allowed applicant ccs to be updated for a second time last Friday. I was informed that “no” drawing runs have been performed so far and they were waiting until all applications were fully processed (by hand???) . It sounded like the new system they bought into was failing at some level but they anticipated it would be ready to run the draw sometime this week. Unfortunately, the only way my applications would be viable is if they decided to again reopen another window to update cc’s. Apparently, I’m not alone as they have had many call in already to report new fraudulent cc shutdowns. A slim chance exists for me and my buddy who is on my apps but what else can you to do? They are unfortunately being very rigid with their draw process when ccs are concerned. No options are available to remedy if your card doesn’t process for any reason. Lady Luck has left the room.
My card that I used for applying in Arizona had fraudulent charges on Friday of last week. I was able to update with another card before the deadline but I couldn’t figure out where the numbers got nabbed from. Has anyone else had a compromised card?
I also have a friend who put in with his brother who's card just got canceled and reissued yesterday. They called AZ and they're out of luck. Lots of folks are getting screwed by this. And still no one reporting any cc hits...
No update to their website regarding the draw in over a week. CC deadline extended to last Friday yet I’ve not heard from anyone who’s card was hit yet. They’ve really screwed it up this time.
The story's of cards getting canceled sux bad. I've had that happen before, but luckily not during draw season. I have 2 cards, 1 for the draws a a few other purchases. And 1 for everything else. Good luck everyone
I'm hoping for an AZ tag and I debated long and hard about applying for NM too. I finally decided that after waiting so many years for an AZ tag I wanted to commit 100% to AZ and didn't want to draw NM the same year so I didn't apply. I sure hope AZ comes through!
Im really very frustrated with their new policy of not helping you if, (from no fault of your own), your cc is comprised ... ”Applicants are responsible for keeping their account information current. If payment is declined at the time of the draw, the application will not be drawn. AZGFD no longer calls customers to obtain payment on drawn applications if their credit card or debit card has been declined.” I believe this lack of fair play will come back to bite them. Lawsuits??
Been hovering around this thread to see when they start hitting. Got popped for 3rd tag in 7 years. Gosh if it’s first choice I’ll freak. Probably not though
Only government run operations have the freedom to operate like this. How come every single private company in the world is able to facilitate online transactions daily without issue? They have to or they won’t be in business. What a joke.
I just received an important memo ! Confirmed from your sisters friend at G&F.
All CC hits are for the drawing application before the actual successful applicant. It is the new " Pay it Forward application system" this is the system that has been adopted and modeled from new Colorado game management system " No Deer for You"
We appreciate all of your kind donations to your fellow hunters.
Cheesehead Mike, I applied for a very hard to draw unit and I don't have that many points. There is virtually no way that I will draw. However, my AZ portal also shows a "pending" status, and my credit card has not been charged. I'm betting that "pending" just means that they are still working on it. Perhaps they used that description to keep the complaints at bay for a few more days?
The actual draw and credit card hits is SEPARATE from the portal system. It usually takes a week or so AFTER the draw occurs to update your portal account. Everyone’s portal that is in the draw will usually show ‘pending’ until it is updated.
If your card has not been hit by now , then there’s a good chance you have not drawn. There are exceptions, but those are not the norm.
"I'm expecting to draw but my card hasn't been hit. I just logged into my AZ portal and it shows my application as pending so I still have hope..."
No, there is no hope, based on the facts of the situation, sorry to say. Moral of the story for the thousands of guys who over-worry about drawing both NM and AZ? Always put in for amazing NM tags if still waiting on AZ draw results.
All 171,000 or whatever applicants still have 'pending in portal accounts.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but with more than 18K more applicants than last year, I'm guessing there is going to be some point creep for most hunts. AZ is supposed to grow by more than 1.3 million people by 2030 so it's only going to get worse.
Believe I have an early archery tag (Sept 10-23) in Unit 1,2B,2C or 10. likely 10. any thoughts on if this is a good tag to have drawn? Thanks for opinions .
Cheesehead Mike, If AZ was preference point state I would tend to go along with you but we are a bonus point state and everyone has a chance of drawing a tag. Albeit a small chance the fewer points you have, there is still a chance. A 12-13 percent increase in applicants in one year is bound to have an affect on the draw.
Well,1:30am Saturday just checked my credit card after being out with my girl for a few beers and I discovered I got hit by Arizona for $650. Looks like I'll be bow hunting for bull elk in Arizona this September!
Nothing for me but I was not expecting anything. I just checked my portal and discovered that my bonus points are incorrect. They somehow shorted me one point. So, you may want to check your points carefully.
