Discuss our Live Saskatchewan Bowhunt
Good luck Pat!! I'll be watching......
Remember, love the avalanche hate the red wings and you'll get the biggest buck.
Why did you pick this time frame. Is there any rutting activity yet?
Fish , rut is 3 to 4 weeks off . But the deer are more predictable now as they pig out in preperation for the Rut . Plus the several times I hunted the rut in that area the antlers were busted up on many of the big bucks .
And its a heck of a lot warmer now for Bowhunters to do their thing .
not to mention Pat's plans to hunt Kansas during the rut...
I really enjoy these hunts you do. That mountain goat adventure was beyond comprehension...you're truly a dedicated bow hunter. I tip my hat to you.
Two questions I have are regarding your equipment.
Why do you use full-length feathers? I see your roots go back to traditional days
And, do you use a string peep sight?
Good luck with this hunt and this year’s adventures.
PS. That video about the Worlds Greatest Tracker is a hoot. Priceless! Cherish your children, for they grow-up faster than we (often) want.
I've of had a hard time not shooting that last buck...he is a pretty one!
You've aleady seen more bucks than I see in several years....including trail cam pictures...good luck
Where's the update? Hopefully Pat's caping one out.
How big of a buck is he holding out for this hunt?
10:05 EST.....usually an update by now.
1. Technical difficulties
2. He went for 3rds at the dinner table
3. Tracking with the headlamps
I don't know how many times i've hit refresh for today's update! Hope its good news!
Great buck Pat! Congrats! I'm counting 5 on his right side though, plus a split brow and a long kicker on his left base.
Congrats on a great deer Pat! Looks like he dropped 6 inches at the shot. I would guess he scores around 155 or so.
High 140's or low 150's
Congrats Pat, i`d say he nets about 154..........
Congrats Pat! Nice buck!!Looks 140ish.
What a hog you shot and congrats on a quick kill. Great patience too...gona try and remember that.
Thanks for taking us all along on this hunt.
Best wishes, Russell
Beautiful deer! Why do you keep calling it an 8pt, though? Love thay chocolate rack.
Great buck and a great shot, Pat. 300 pounds... what beast! Once again, thank you for letting us tag along on your hunt.
Nice job! Neat looking brow points on him. I'll guess around 145 gross.
Well, that didn't take too long! Congratulations on a great buck. That dude is a hoss.
Congratulations Pat! I'll guess 138 net. Can't wait for the bloodtrail contest on this one. I'll have a chance to score well.
Beauty Pat....congrats. I figure 136 gross give it take an inch
146 gross..decent brows...net 137.3 ;)
Congrads Pat...love them chocolate racks
Congrats Pat - 142 5/8's...
I am guessing taking into account the huge size of that deer that he will score close to 150. He "looks" like mid to high 130s but I am sure that is way low.
Regardless....who cares. That is a stud of a buck. It may be one of the most colorful and beautiful hero shots I have seen in some time. Congrats!
Wait a second...I just went a looked at the photos again..something about his ears don`t look right..lol...droopy...he he
Yawn. Travel clear up north to shoot a buck over bait?? Booo.
Beautiful Deer!! Way to go, Pat! 140?
146 7/8" Beautiful Buck regardless of the score...
151 Gross. Congratulations Pat!
146 Gross. Nice buck, love the chocolate rack!
That is one handsome buck, nice shot.
I find it amusing that so many of you are praising Pat for shooting a deer over a bait pile. I'm sure I have seen alot of you on this site railing against people that bait. Hmmmmm
Congrats Pat! Great buck!
To you baiting elitists....take it somewhere else guys....actually I am pretty sure you might get taken there.
Slim--praising and congradulating are two different things...Baiting is a big issue with me and even my best friends get a hard time when they drag their deer over to my taxidermy shop but I have fun with it. I just poke at them and have some fun...I don`t take it so serious that I draw a line in the sand...Life is just to short..
OK here goes---Shame on you Pat...;)
Congrats Pat. I like your reaction (big smile, thumbs up) no fist pumping, smoked 'em comments. Excellent thoughts on shot placement and why. I would guess around 147" gross.
Nice deer! Gross score...143
Very nice Congrats Pat! That dark rack is sweet...152 Gross
Wow, that's a beaut!!! Congrats Pat on a stud of a buck!
All the bait haters should go and hunt up north without for two weeks....they'll curl up in a ball and cry like a girl after 7 days without seeing a deer. ;-)
+1 Shug - 135-140.
Great hunt and as always thanks for sharing!!!
150 gross. Nice deer. Those chocolate antlers on the big bodied Canada bucks sure are purdy.
Nice job Pat. Love those chocolate horns!
140 3/8" is my guess
Don't know about the score but a PIG of a buck!!
David in GA
Heck of a brute! Congratulations! Love the play by play along with the pictures. As to the score, who cares he's big enough!
Pat just left for home and not a moment too soon, what a maroon that guy is - a real "Look at me, I'm so famous" kinda dude. Just funnin' ya: he's a good guy and hunter - and he gets most of my jokes so that's a bonus. One of the great things about hunting that seldom gets mentioned is the fun and humor that is a big part of a good trip - at least around here anyway. He hunts hard but likes to have fun also, the kind of client we like. Congrats to him on making a deadly shot on a great buck.
Yeah...147. What is the bait?
Congrats Pat, nice shooting, great buck.
I never stated I was against baiting in my post. I just simply stated that I found it amusing that there where some that have been anti-baiting on this site before congratulating Pat..
Whackm are you telling me that bait is the only way people kill deer in Canada?
We hunt with or without bait, according to client preference. About 10 days ago one of our archery clients killed a 150 buck that we patterned between a bedding and feeding area (alfalfa field). I built a natural ground blind (his seat was a treestand about a foot off the ground) 20 yards from the buck's travel route. The first day the wind was favorable he sat there, shot the buck and watched it go down. We also have success hunting scrape and rub lines and we set up stands for rattling and calling. Bait is not the only way to get a shot here but it can be effective and you will definitely see deer and often lots of them. A client this morning had 18 deer, six of them bucks, (130 class the biggest) within 15 yards of his groundblind. he loves to watch deer and hunting over bait is a lot of fun for him. It isn't a sure ticket to a big buck that some mistakenly think it is.
Slim, no, that's not what he's saying...but he IS saying that in the early season that you will get quite bored on stand all day if it's not baited. Geez, how hard it that to understand or figure out?
Here's another look. What a giant head (on the deer).
Beautiful buck - Congratulations, Pat!
I'll clarify for you all. I live in manitoba, and baiting isn't allowed. I had the good fortune to shoot my elk opening day. So I spent the rest of my time off chasing whitetails in country much like that around Rob Nyes area. I finally saw and shot a mature buck on day 17. Its a tough hunt!!! I know so many guys that give up after 4 days.
I'm sure if I could bait the number of encounters would have gone up, but its still not a sure thing. Pat didn't have 17 days to hunt, he had 6. He did what he was allowed to do by law to up the odds. I see no problem with that.
Nice buck! I'm guessing 142 3/8.
Geez how hard is that to understand or figure it out? Really Steve?guess next time I'll try and read between the lines a little better.oh by the way Steve next time you want to insult my intelligence PM me..great looking buck Pat.
What a hog! Congratulations. Never saw anything that big up close. Pat aimed low, I'll aim high - 156. Bet I screw up the blood trail challenge as well
Great looking buck, congratulations.
And thanks for all the extra effort you put in just to share the hunt with us.
Nice buck, love the dark rack too. Bait, schmait... who cares, where legal.
Congratulations Pat, a beautiful Buck and who cares if it was over bait when the laws there permit it. I guess him at 147 gros.I have hunted Saskatchewan for at least 20 years and enjoyed every hunt, I will be hunting the last week of November, cold, cold . cold.
What did he score???
Grosses in the mid-150's I'm guessing.
Great Buck Pat!!! I think he"ll score just fine............
Congrats Pat, great big brute of a buck, guess on the score 8 or 9pt with good mass Gross 148
I am thinking he was 155". Big bodies can be deceiving. Lots of mass. Love the characteristics of the antlers, chocolate color, wavy brow tines, pointed downward tip of the right main beam. Very distinctive. Congrats Pat...
Congrats on a great Sask buck. Perfect shot. Did you go with anyone and if so how did they do or other camp members?
149 3/4 gross
Break a leg in Kansas..... There's a 200" with your name on it
Congrats Pat beautiful buck
Great deer Pat 148 gross, 140 net
Nice job Pat. Another excellent bowsite feature. I am going to guess it scored 147" gross. You better be getting a shoulder mount on this guy!
Nice Buck! The old tried and true two blade broadhead kills a buck fast when placed correctly. Loved the lack of flight response from the buck.
Congrats to you Pat on a fine trophy!
Another great hunt....THANKS Pat!!!!!
Wat to go Pat! You did a great job.
The Newfoundland ferry is just leaving the dock and I am on a day early!
Matt: Start packin it's "whitey time"!!
Congrats!! Love those big Canadian Bucks!!!
Can't say much more than most already have Pat. That hunt is on the to do list, looks like Rob might be the guy.
The video footage was great as well. Thanks for sharing!
Congrats on the buck Pat, he's a great deer!!!
In defense of Pat , its very hard to judge antlers in Canada because of the big bodys . My Canadian bucks score 139 , 144 , 152 , and 168 . Its a learning process .
I'm one of the biggest anti-baiters on the site and have lost many stars over the years . BUT I have and will hunt over bait in Northern SK and Southwest Texas . Or you won't see many deer if any .
Charlie: Who you hunting with? I leave tomorrow to go to Victoria Outfitters...
Congrats Pat. Great deer. When you get a chance, please explain your video setup from the ladder stand.
Great Buck, Great Shot and Great scenery, now if I only couldve been along to hold the camera after the shot.:-). Thanks for taking us along and thanks for everything else also.
NICE!!! How or when do we find out the score?
That deer has a huge body and will score better than most think ....165
Here is what I`m getting by going off Pat`s picture..My hand across the top of the fingers measure 3 and 3/4 inches...so i`m using that as my guide..lol..I`m just doing this for fun but my original guess is close to what i`m getting by using my scale..
g1`s rh 5 inches.. lh 3 inches.. g2`s rh--9 inches.. lh-8 inches.. g3`s...both 10 inches.. g4 right side 3 inches.. mainbeams 23 inches each.. spread 19.. mass 32.. kicker on left side by base 2 inches.
145 gross is what I`m getting..Now C`mon Pat spill the beans before I put this on CATIA...he he
Oh tease us now...lol...well at least i got the spread right. he he
I just watched the video again..Man that was a beautiful shot Pat!
147" what the mass and spread was is pretty much what I cane up with.
147" what the mass and spread was is pretty much what I cane up with.
It's funny, so much emphasis on a score. I like big deer, but what I'm really hunting is good country. I enjoyed the video because it showed glimpses of some great looking deer country...
David: Pat challenged us at the end of the hunt to guess the score.
Your right he did, but I think my point still has merit. On the other hand, probably a lot of people would find it of minor importance. Even outfitters' websites may enthusiastically present decapitated deer or elk heads but few images of the country. I contacted one Canadian outfitter about that and his reply pretty much dismissed my thinking on the matter since I was the first person who wanted to see a lot of terrain/landscape pics...
David it sounds to me like you need to go more on a sight seeing trip and not a deer hunt. I have never heard of anyone that was going on a hunt more interested in the landscape then the deer quality.
Lol...darn decapitated heads...just finished skinning one of those nasty things and threw it in the tanning solution...he he..must be getting close to Halloween
I know what you're saying David. I like a sceanic setting when I hunt. It actually makes or breaks it for me. Pats Sask hunt clearly was a beautiful setting. Part of the whole package is a remote peaceful setting not surrounded by houses or traffic. And then a big buck is the cherry on the cake!
Yes, Pat. Quite a fe of the Canadian outfitters have pic after pic of a bunch of cutoff deer heads and that may not be a turn off to you but it it is to me, especially when thery have nothing to show the type or quality of the land where the hunts take place. I find it hard to believe the landscape and habitat is not of primary interest.
Hardcore, you just heard of one then. I make no apologies for focusing on hunting good country. Good country usually produces the best game anyway. I don't think this is absurd, Ortega Gasset wrote about it as have many of our better contemporary writers. And I'm not a wannabe bowhunter; it's because of my dedication that I am a hunter of good country.
Anyway, Pat I don't mean to hijack this thread. I wanted to compliment Rob on having acess to some great habitat some of which I could see in your video. Rob and i almost put together a hunt a few yrs. ago and may still someday.
Good grief, has everyone lost their ability to hunt?
I liked to follow Pat's hunts a lot better back in the grizzly hunt days.
Are you going to use this as blood trail challenge? was the microphone right next to your bow. That sounded like a rifle shot. nice arrow placement! It looked like the buck dropped 6 inches before arrow impact. did you aim low?
Nice big bodied buck! Congrats!
well said Pat and congrats on a great buck....
I might have to stop at Dave's and see that one in person
That amount of country sounds great to me. Good luck in Kansas!
Wow...that might be the worst guess I've ever put on a buck.13 inches off I guess the giant body and factoring in Pat took a Chuck Adams type pose threw me....lol again congrats Pat...
